I don't agree that people who feel uncomfortable being around gay people are people who're uncomfortable with their own sexuality, the problem is fear and ignorance of an unknown...in this case, not understanding that these people aren't gonna 'gay it up', they're just going to do their jobs. In 27 years in the military, I know I served with gay service people, and they were just as capable as any other. Glad to see DADT finally on it's last legs...
While I agree that homosexuals should NOT be barred from military service, the law does not reflect that yet. While the good Major was seen as one of the best medical staff in the entire Air Force (as remarked on by her command, her peers, and her patients), she was still violating the law. Again, I personally feel that DADT should be repealed, and homosexuals should be able to serve in our armed forces openly, but sadly, the law prevents that now.
People who are homophobic are uncomfortable with their own sexuality. What should it matter whom you choose to sleep with if you are good at your job.
If I was a doctor and the person didn't want me to perform on them, fuck them let them slowly die the way they are. We gays aren't leaving. We don't want to leave, and we are not going to leave. It is sad that some people think we are a bad thing in society, that society would be better off without us. We like you said, are doctors, lawyers, business owners, charity fundraisers, teachers, etc. and are just as much of a part as any minority.
might be off subj a bit but can u be gay and racist? bc this sounds like stuff my uncles went thru in the navy back in the 50s. somehow ur skin color prevented work performance too. its all stupid and its all governed by the same ppl
The older I get the more amazed I become at the anti gay attitude that seems to bleed through society. Why are straight people thinking about gay sex in the first place? It all comes down to religion and religion is for people who can't think for themselves. We will win this battle, Steph! I just hope it happens in my lifetime. -Steve-
I remember Maj. Witt's story! I'm glad to hear she was reinstated! Keep up the good fight! Maybe one day this won't be an issue...well...I'm hoping I will see that day in my lifetime! Better hurry though...my days are running low! LOL
You said it, Steph! I'll never understand the Fear some folks have of Gays, but your suggestion that they're just not comfortable with their OWN selves seems the most logical answer. Most of us are born to Heteros, so where do these fearful folks think Gays come from?
Because a 2,000 year old book told me so, the same book that advocates child rape, the ripping open of pregnant women and slavery. Makes perfect sense.
What was before DADT makes me vomit...DADT makes me sick...having a rule that calms homophobes at the expense an individual's freedom and rights, in the United States of Amerca, makes me ashamed.
DADT has nothing to do with good personnel but rather with a freaking witch hunt. It is on it's way out, just not soon enough. It's ruined peoples lives and left the military without a lot of talented people. The cool part of this particular one is not only how excellent a flight nurse Witt is but that the decision came from a Bush appointed judge. I love that. Here's to a rapid repeal.
RE: comfortability, last week I was helping with my college's Club Rush (Anime Club); we were stationed/set up right next to the LGBTQ Club, and we were obliged to be fairly quiet because they had FREAKING LOUD TECHNO MUSIC playing the entire time (9 AM to 2 PM).
I can't speak for others, but, although I can usually get along with anyone else, when I can't hear myself exist because the music next to me is so loud that my brain wants to run away, what can I do?
I think when it comes to saving someone's life you would be hard pressed to find anyone who would have a problem with a gay or lesbian saving them. If they did then they should just be left to die anyway.
As for the nurse, I'm happy to hear she was reinstated. I think you're right though. Some one had it out for her and perhaps used the sexuality issue against her as a mater of convenience.
@MrCaltec A friend I had about 5-6 years ago, Brendan, was a tank commander in Desert Storm. He was also the vice-president then the president of my college's LGBTQ Club (then called GALA) for two years. He was a very nice guy who would help me out whenever I asked.
