Well, if you're going to ape another game, it may as well be Cave Story. CS really raised the bar for retro-platformers on the indie level. I'm happy to report that The Underside's preview version shows that there is still a lot of wiggling room for creativity within an established world. Cave Story itself was a rip off of several classic platformers. Does that make it bad? No, that's a hell of a standard to live up too. I applaud makers reaching that height. Can't wait for the full version.

You know, one, there is a fourth official preview ( not here, so bite me ) , and it contains a MASSIVE graphics overhaul, costumes ( especially a Quote costume ) , melee weapons ( including your fists ) , and a more of an exploratory world, and finally a use for those god awful coins!

Honestly I had an unhealthy obsession with Cave Story for the last few days and I beat it completely. Now I can make my mod with this and base a fresh storyline for myself in my free time, and some people might even start some big projects with the mod system. This game isn't quite as good as Cave Story, in my opinion. However, the test feeds my addiction and I hope the team works on it a lot faster.

Also, you should maybe use the palette, you used in the logo more. That mix of purple, yellow, and blue, look very refreshing and playful.

Its cool that you're doing this, and i know its inspired by cave story, and thats great. But you should maybe change a bit the BG, those rocks on the first level look as if you stole the cave story pixels... that, and the red letters that show the damage. Awesome soundtrack by the way, im looking forward to this being released.

I am a fan of Cave Story, and played the preview of this game, I love it. I can't believe people don't know how to read.

On his site it states, "the underside is an exploration based action platformer in the vein (it's a pun~) of games like castlevania, metroid, and cave story."

Jeez, the negativity of some people in the comments...just STFU. No one will force you to play it. I mean jeez, it's like saying because a game is in a similar style (and a similar sort of game) it's the same game...I guess all platform games are rip offs of Super Mario Bros, or maybe Super Mario Bros was a rip off of the platforming arcade games that came before it. whoever saying its not a somewhat ripoff of cavestory must have never played cavestory, at the very least the engine was build around being like cave story. It looks like it plays the same, same damage indicator(identical),same graphic style, similiar terrain in most areas, thats not to say that its a bad game, but denying its not based around cave story is like saying oranges arent orange.
