Had the privilege of meeting Mr Honeyghan about 12-13 odd years ago. Whilst giving me an autograph, I said, 'Mr Honeyghan, you were like a man possessed when you beat Curry.' He simply said 'I was'.
I remember watching this fight was an awesome night can't think of many recent fights where a british fighter showed so much hunger. I was so proud of Lloyd here wish boxing these days was worth watching.
Lloyd Honeyghan epitomises the Great in Britain. To take his boxing crusade into the backyard of Donald Curry, who nobody should forget was at the time, pound for pound the master of his craft. To take this fight at short notice, and to dismantle Curry with a show of boxing excellence, says that Honeyghan had the heart of a lion and should be recognised in the Hall of Fame. Why Honeyghan was never honoured with a Knighthood for that achievement alone, is a disgrace. THE TRUE YANK SPANKER!
People talk about knowing where they were when Kennedy was shot. I'd only just been born then, but I got so drunk before the fight that I coudn't stay awake for it. Anyway, I thought that Lloyd was surely going to lose.
I will never foget turning on my radio in the mornig and hearing the result. I was screaming and swearing at the walls in disbelief. My brohter couldn't wipe the smile off his face for a week, JeromePeter, BNP member.
I,m British and can't understand why people think that the American commentary is biased towards Curry. After the fight one states that Honeyghan would have won the
fight regardless of the injury, and the other says that he had Honeyghan 5-1 up.
Yes, they misinterpreted the collision of heads,as Honeyghan's head seemed to
Honeyghan ended Curry's career in this bout. Curry had a high degree of success against relatively static opponents and earned his "Cobra" nickname. Honeyghan moved too quickly for him in this bout. Curry had no time to adopt that "Cobra and shoot" technique that he depended so much on. There's no doubt that Curry realised that this bout had exposed that weakness, hence his retirement. As for the commentary, this was no upset. Curry was over-hyped solely on the basis of this "Cobra" trait.

Honeyghan seemed to be on his way to victory and was certainly ahead on the scorecards.I had it 59-55 at the time of the stoppage.Nonetheless this should have been ruled an accidental headbutt and gone to the scorecards.A technical decision victory instead of a technical knockout victory.
I dont think Curry had met ANYBODY as fired up in a challenger as Lloyd Honeyghan. He was just the right man, in the right place, at the right time to terrorise Mr Curry bless... Skill for skill, Curry was probably MILES ahead of Lloyd. But, on THIS night? He met a STARVING, Hyena of a fighter who just would not be denied! This was in the days when TRUE Champs, met their No.1's. And that is just how this fight turned out... Terrific win for a fellow Brit! BraaaP!!!
@PhflyDan1 Very well said!!! Some Boxing critic's STILL won't give Honeyghan the credit for his great performance! Curry was the best fighter pound 4 pound at that time. And he fought and beat all the top Welterweights before he took this fight with Lloyd. So Credit to Curry also. But i like it {Starving Hyena!!!} Too true. Would be a night mare to come across some one like that!!
Something never mentioned is that on the British coverage, at the end of the sixth, Curry's cornerman says to him, 'You can do this Don', and Curry replies flatly, 'I can't''. Curry would have been lucky to survive the next round, cut or no cut and had seemingly given up here. Watch Honeyghan KO the italian Rossi to see his tremendous punching power, he was a knock out artist himself. Curry had a champion's chin and took some great shots that would have knocked many other guys out.

@Maxshard well i remember watching it on TV here in the UK!!infact i think i may even have made a video recording of it which i still may have somewhere in my parents house!!not sure about live, but i definitely saw this fight on TV!!
Its nothing like a butt!I have nothing but respect for Don Curry,he was a great fighter but neither fighter was at fault at the point the commentator calls a head butt.It was an accident"Honeyghan knows how to use his head"Americans just dont like it when it goes wrong for their guy.
Curry just was not in the fight,Honeyghan shocked him,he was just too fast on the night
I remember when this happened. Curry had been a precision punching machine, and maybe the best fighter in the world. But this fight completely derailed Curry's career, and I don't think he ever really recovered from it mentally. Even from the first round he couldn't stop Honeyghan or get his timing. But props to Lloyd who came to fight and legitimately took the belt.
I'm American white middle aged I rooted for Curry. this fight was fun to watch and don't forget the bottom line is that if both if their great grand parents were not taken as slaves the belt would be in Africa. So get off the where their from shit.
@tellthetruthg Honeyghan is mixed race, white/black, I dont understand what that has to do with anything. If the British didn't sail west and colonize America then you wouldn't be posting your silly comments.
@TheBoxingFan360 I should have mentioned I was responding to the announcers . Any way silly comment to you, but taken out of context. If you think it was about two men fighting you're naive. Listen to what the announcers are saying it wasn't Honeyghan vs Curry it was a Brit vs an American. No hard feelings Boxingfan360
A part of me is from here (no sailing). My Great Grand Mother was Mexican and her ancestors were native Aztec. I say white because I mostly am Euro. Americans are very mixed
@TheBoxingFan360 ps I should have said some of my ancestors origin are from what is called Mexico. So I'm very mixed blood. You can judge me if you feel the need. Oh you already did. Silly me. Side note: My point was fighters represent them selves and countries try to claim them as their own. In today's world a lot of us are from some where else.
curry was a legend and had serious trouble making weight visibly weak ragamuffin had a lucky day at the office as soon as he fought a good un again he was well beat
..........If I hear the word "butt" one more time I swear I'll lose fucking control!.....Honeyghan kicked his arse in his own backyard and let me tell ya something else fight fans.........Curry was glad it ended when it did!....Cos he knew he was gettin a beating!
Honeyghan was on fire he could not and would not be denied. It's often so funny how US commentators talk about a 'clash of heads' when their own man prevails but it's 'a deliberate butt' when they don't! Great credit to Micky Duff for his step in support of Lloyd - a premier occassion for British Boxing! Great posting, thank you my eldest boy was born in 86 a wonderful year all round!!
I recall this win from the 80s - did not even bother watching the fight as I expected Curry to ko in 3. Honeygan could have been a legend - but I remember his "I'm cheesed off with boxing" press conference and he obviously did not have the attitude of a Duran or Leonard. Shame as he had the talent.
Butt my arse!! Watch the replay, no butt at all, absolutely none! Curry knew he was well fucked and slid away knowing that next round a clear KO from Honeyghan was on it's way.
Shame, serious shame on the commentator who couldn't and wouldn't believe his own eyes!!
Interesting to note at around the 5:20 to 5:30 mark they replay what they think was the butt that caused the cut to Curry's eye. It appears that the butt connects above the eyebrow and that, if you freeze frame it, Curry's eye is bleeding before the butt connects. Yes, Curry was in with a billy goat, but Honeyghan was far too quick and far too strong for him that night. It probably did Curry a favour as Honeyghan could have caused him serious damage if it had gone on much longer.
WOW! Kinda reminds me of that one fight they show on ESPN CLASSIC, when a yound Roberto Duran beat Ken Buchanan, when they stopped the fight on a controvesial low-blow...Sure Lloyd was beating himn HANDS-DOWN, but he won OFF of a HEAD-BUTT--accidental or not!
Did Curry EVER GET HIS REMATCH with Honeygan??? cause EVEN AFTER LOSING in a controversial manner, he showed class and sportsmanship---which SURE AS HELL WOULDN've happened in TODAY's BOXING!!!!
Curry was lucky that there was a clash of heads. Listen to these girlie sore loser yanks wailing about a 'butt'. Curry would almost certainly have been knocked out within a couple of rounds regardless. Fair do's to Curry, he didn't complain at all. As for Curry fighting Hagler, don't make me laugh. Curry was a very fine fighter but he was hyped.
Curry was a really good boxer, but Honeyghan was better. And what a character! He would rush at people when the bell went, even before they got off their stools. He didn't come to take prisoners, he used to say. I enjoyed watching him.
And how can the Americans accuse anyone of cheating?
Lol at the yanks making excuses, fought at welter for ages and gets whipped then he was weight drained.
As for Mr505burque your a clueless spastic, only stopped on cuts, nice one is that not legit to take a beating and stop because your face is cuts to bits.Delusional prick.
Lloyd did great but Don was dead at the weight. Interestingly Don lost next time out at Light Middleweight when knocked spark out against Mike 'the bodysnatcher' McCallum. Lloyd was a party boy and had stuttering wins for the next couple of years (Jorge Vaca, Johnny Bumfus, exactly) before meeting a very ordinary Marlon Starling who beat him like he was his daddy. I never forgave Donald Curry for giving a brave Colin Jones the hiding that retired him.
The US has a population of 308,000,000 and the UK 62,000,000. In terms of population the UK actually outperforms the US. Also we all need to remember the main main is from the Phillipines
@ilpo12 True but when I posted that comment he was retired and besides Manny is still number 1 on most P4P lists whilst I don't subscribe to them he is obviously not top of yours!
I think the point was Honeyghan was kicking Curry's ass. Hatton is overrated but then again that's the kind of fighter Floyd likes, a moneymakin low-risk opponent. He's an amazing fighter who has avoided the real threats. But hey, the names look good huh?!
@edammade To be fair a prime Roy Jones Jr would of knocked Calzaghe out in 3 rounds and a prime Hopkins would of beat him on points in a fairly close IMO and im British/English. I thought your comment about Hatton being overrated was spot on.
@123jokaaAlthough, I agree those results are possible, in this case we'll never know. That's what makes these debates so eternal. When people say Calzaghe wouldn't have beat prime JonesJr/Hopkins, they are thinking of the more famous 30+ Calzaghe fighting when actually he too was way past his best. The young Calzaghe was even faster and busier than the old and would have given those too all types of problems. He also had knockout power which he had to forgo later on due to broken hands.
@edammade I have a collection of all Joe Calzaghes fights which someone gave me, and although he could punch i don't beleive he had knockout power, Roy Jones Jr had knockout power i would say Calzaghe was more like Hopkins and had good power, i really beleive Roy Jones was the kind of talent that we don't see very often and in his prime would of beaten anyone and quite comfortably! Hopkins also a great fighter in his prime at about 33, he would be in my top 5 middleweights ever!
@123jokaa Thats a very ignorant point youve made, and there are many points that go against Jones and his career , he never left his comfort zone : America, Many top guys wanted to fight him but he avoided them Benn, Collins etc He had used steroids and admitted so. He fought Calzaghe only when it suited him the same goes for Hopkins. Also certain boxers have certain styles Eubanks and Herol Grahams style would have frustrated Jones, A pure blooded right hand from Chris would have decked jones
@123jokaa Calzaghe had a good Punch in his prime even though hed suffered hand and wrist injurys going back to his amatuer days. Jones was fast and fought in bursts cos he was a thinker in the ring, Calzaghe was fast too and had great foot movement and had a higher workrate and stamina than Jones. If they had fought in their prime it would be 50/50, think about it Jones fought in bursts while Calzaghe would be throwing jabs and rights at Jones allnight constantly...
@DaveyBoyEssexUK your exactly right. the truth hurts thats why people dont like the fact calzaghe dominated him. or the fact he beat bhop with ease (if you think bhop won you must be blind because the fight i watched calzaghe clearly deserved the decision). calzaghes workrate and pressure is enough to dominate them in thier prime or not!
@123jokaa Calzaghes chin was rock solid too and he had one of the best recovery rates going. Michael Watson and Gerald McClellan would have given both Jones and Calzaghe a heck of a fight. Nigel Benn offered to come over to America and fight Jones and let Jones have all the Money, Jones declined. Going back to the start and saying Jones would have beat anyone comfortably is just plain ignorant
Honeyghan won on cuts? what the hell i thought he knocked him cold or ref stoppage oh that not a big deal any fighter can beat any fighter on cuts. As for you brittish Bastards talking shit. just look up You boy Ricky Fatton getting splattered by Pretty Boy. OOOOOOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHHHHHHH yeah
I was referring to Gil Clancy who, if you do a little research is one of the greatest boxing minds of the last 40 yrs, first as a trainer, then as a color commentator. So I do not know what the hell ur referring to in your comment. I wasnt commenting on the fight or the fighters, dope.
The single greatest achievement by a British boxer in the 40 years I have been watching the sport. And I enjoyed watching ever single minute of this again, thanks.
There hasn`t been another since then and probably never will be esp as boxing has gone downhill.Americas domination of boxing has petered(spelling correct?) out.
@uglyshortandginger that's odd. lewis winning the heavyweight title, twice? joe calzaghe beating hopkins? these things and many more are more impressive than honeyghan over curry. honeyghan just exposed an overrated champion, and then achieved nothing else himself. mark breland and marlon starling made him his bitch.
@uglyshortandginger that's odd. lewis winning the heavyweight title, twice? joe calzaghe beating hopkins? these things and many more are more impressive than honeyghan over curry. honeyghan just exposed an overrated champion, and then achieved nothing else himself. mark breland and marlon starling made him their bitch.
@uglyshortandginger It sure goes down as one of the best upsets by a British fighter along with Turpin's win over Robinson, Benn's win over McClellan and Calzaghe's win over Lacey.
Honeyghan, like Lennox Lewis, won every professional title available to him & beat some damn good fighters to get there too. Why are they not feted & lorded in the UK the way they should be?
He was EXACTLY the same fighter just in against a fighter who was aggressive and confident not timid and unconfident like McCrory. Curry got smoked by the better man. Deal with it.
Not even. It was well known that Curry struggled incredibly to make the weight limit of 147 pounds. A 100 percent Curry mops the floor with Honeyghan.
Oh yes it is. In fact, Mayweather is constantly criticized and rightfully so for never beating a legitimate weltwerweight. All his fights at the weight have been against guys that were either past their primes or of low quality.
Curry was beaten. No doubt. But he just didn't look right before or during that fight.
There's no way you can look at Curry's best fights and compare them with his performance against Honeyghan. Two different fighters. Curry wasn't the same guy who beat McCrory when he fought Honeyghan.
I agree about Donald Curry but why did he take the fight? Why?Honeyghan was so fuckin dangerous or was it because he thought it was another "dumb" Brit.Seemed like it was that at the press conference.
yes he was getting beat but it doesnt matter, anything can happen at any time in a fight, look at the forman, moorer fight, of coarse i think lloyd would of won, but we will never know this for sure, bottom line is the fight got stopped by a illegal headbut there for it should be a no contest.
Donald Curry didn't lose because he was butted, he was very soundly beaten on the night and told his corner at the end of the sixth that he couldn't fight on.
He also said the next day that he had no complaints about the fight. I'm not sure you should allow yourself to be so easily led by biased American commentators who had Curry down as the next best thing since Ray Robinson and were covering their bottoms so to speak and giving Curry excuses, which with dignity he refused to accept.
You said Honehghan burned bright but burned fast? Sounds like you're talking about Donald Curry. Sad he didn't become an all-time great. He was a special talent. What a waste!
Nice to see Curry raise Lloyd's arm & walk around the ring together at the end. He gets credit for that in my book. Speaks volumes. He knew the score... he knew when he'd been in with a better fighter.
Lloyd burned bright but burned fast. Sadly his time at the top was short lived. That's why he's not remembered by more people alongside the likes of Lewis/Calzaghe/Eubank/Benn.
my god one of those american commentators really was an idiot, why did he refer to it as a butt? was clearly an accidental clash of heads but of course american fighters never lose they get cheated apparently
yeah it was a good fight..one i will never forget, is nigel benn v gerald mclellan. you didnt have to be so hard on curry..on any givin night these dudes can come out damaged for ever..hence gerald mclellan. give them all respect.
starling was decisioned twice by curry but KOd honeyghan. lloyd was also KOd by a jab from mark breland aswell as on 2 or 3 more occassions. curry was stopped by both mccallum, norris n some other guy whos name i cant remember.
curry had so much talent, its insane he never became one of d greats
Guess Im the only one, who thinks Starling won the 1st fight with Curry. If he didnt, its not as one sided for Curry as everyone seems to think,it was a damn close fight. Curry won the second, for sure. Can somebody show the 1st Starling/Curry fight?
I am totally mystified after such a masterclass in boxing, the great Lloyd Honeyghan was not honoured for this performance by the british fraternity.WHY ??
I`m the Master of Disaster.....and I DELIBERATELY come to America to prove it. I said to my manager `put in a low bid` - I`m gonna show the American people that I am the true champ.
will that american commentator stop rabbiting on about a "butt".For fucks sake,Honeyghan was all over him and would`ve won anyway.Bloody Yanks can`t accept that one of their own took a pasting.
i think lloyd was seriously underrated, hes far better than the barry mcguigan's and ken buchanan's of british boxing, he was UNDISPUTED welterweight champ, the bumphus fight was sheer brilliant boxing, when he was bobbing and weaving and precise punching, not to mention the curry bout
Curry vs Hagler? Don't make me laugh. If that fight had happened, then Donald would have been carried from the ring. Also the trouble with some American people is that they think that they are invincible. You ARE NOT. I'm afraid the USA is not the only country on the planet. I'm not anti American, but some of the posts are unbelieveable.
I really admire Honeyghan's sportsmanship... I don't, however, feel bad for Curry... people should know better than to take any fighter for granted, no matter how confident you are. If this Donald Curry had stepped in the ring with Hagler, I really think it would have been Curry's last fight.
we do have some GREAT fighters ya yank cunts, curry totally disrespected lloyd, thought he was a bum, how wrong he was, typical yank though, so suppose ya can't blame him
You allow the media to dictate your opinion of Americans so basically you're a hypocrite in the things that you say towards Americans. You're no better than the terrorists that believe they need to murder every American based on the actions of our government.
Curry wasnt ready for the Jamaican rude bwoy tha night!! The Uk was just as much in shock as the US was at that time - still the greatest upset by a british fighter in my opinion.
they had no idea about external fighters ... still don't ( se Joe C etc). Honeyghan did not have the mentality for 20 defences but - on his main fight - was unbeatable. He was a more consistent Kirkland Laing, and a worse fighter....was there a greater talent than Laing???
What's with you? The head butt caused the fight to be stopped - there's nothing "so called" about it. Then Gil Clancey said that Honeyghan almost certainly would have won the fight, head butt or no head butt.
Cool, thanks. I just think the clash of heads wasn't the story of the fight. The real story was who kidnapped Don Curry before the fight and sent that imposter out in his place?
Yes. I watched this broadcast live. There was talk of Curry being the best pound for pound boxer in the world. Instead, a slow robot showed up in his place.
It's one of the biggest upsets I have witnessed. More of an upset than Douglas over Tyson I think as heavyweights are always one good shot from being KO'd
I didnt see it, but hard to believe. I saw Starling fight Curry a few years before, and Starling got the boxing lesson for the whole fight and almost got KTFO in the last round. Starling must have had the best night of his life to beat Honey after Honey beat Curry after Curry beat him (Starling).
Marlon had a few good years where he had the belt. Shortly after he won, he started working with Eddie Futch. His run ended when he was the victim of a cheap shot by Tomas Molinares, who sucker punched him after the bell ending a round (I forget what round it was) Marlon got knocked silly. He never regained his title.
I remember when Marlon KO'd Mark Breland. Marlon was always cool but he really dissed Mark before the fight. But at least he backed it up with the KO.
Marlon was always something of a maverick - doing things his own way. He pretty much trained himself. He had a unique style that was pretty effective (except againt Curry, of course)
The title made him even better as did his association with Futch.
Oh, and I forgot...when Molinares caught him with that punch after the bell, Marlon fell awkwardly, and broke his leg. This also contributed to the beginning of the end for him.
Far as I could tell, in the Curry fight Marlon's strategy was to get inside, kinda rush in, charge in, but Curry kept catching him coming in. Curry was also at his defensive peak, slipping many punches just by moving his head and shoulders. Curry probably really respected Marlon later on after Marlon beat Honey.

Honeyghan was also never the same after his first knockout defeat.
Amazing how these things happen, sometimes.
BruceinFalkirk 1 year ago
In a lot of ways it's a shame this fight was stopped by the cut.
Honeyghan was all over Curry from the first bell and looked set to stop him had the fight continued.
I agree that this much overlooked win is probably the biggest single achievement by a British boxer in recent times.
The American commentators' bias is laughable.
If you didn't know the history of the fighters, you would have thought from this tape that Honeyghan was in a totally different league to Curry.

@tellthetruthg Honeyghan is mixed race, white/black, I dont understand what that has to do with anything. If the British didn't sail west and colonize America then you wouldn't be posting your silly comments.
TheBoxingFan360 1 year ago
@TheBoxingFan360 I should have mentioned I was responding to the announcers . Any way silly comment to you, but taken out of context. If you think it was about two men fighting you're naive. Listen to what the announcers are saying it wasn't Honeyghan vs Curry it was a Brit vs an American. No hard feelings Boxingfan360
A part of me is from here (no sailing). My Great Grand Mother was Mexican and her ancestors were native Aztec. I say white because I mostly am Euro. Americans are very mixed
tellthetruthg 1 year ago
@TheBoxingFan360 ps I should have said some of my ancestors origin are from what is called Mexico. So I'm very mixed blood. You can judge me if you feel the need. Oh you already did. Silly me. Side note: My point was fighters represent them selves and countries try to claim them as their own. In today's world a lot of us are from some where else.

LPCLASSICAL 1 year ago
Butt my arse!! Watch the replay, no butt at all, absolutely none! Curry knew he was well fucked and slid away knowing that next round a clear KO from Honeyghan was on it's way.
Shame, serious shame on the commentator who couldn't and wouldn't believe his own eyes!!
mikris50 1 year ago
Interesting to note at around the 5:20 to 5:30 mark they replay what they think was the butt that caused the cut to Curry's eye. It appears that the butt connects above the eyebrow and that, if you freeze frame it, Curry's eye is bleeding before the butt connects. Yes, Curry was in with a billy goat, but Honeyghan was far too quick and far too strong for him that night. It probably did Curry a favour as Honeyghan could have caused him serious damage if it had gone on much longer.
Groyneyvision 1 year ago

I never forgave Donald Curry for giving a brave Colin Jones the hiding that retired him.

....didn't Calzaghe whoop yo goldenboys Hopkins and Jones Jr?
Howz the American Heavyweight division at the moment???
edammade 2 years ago
@edammade To be fair a prime Roy Jones Jr would of knocked Calzaghe out in 3 rounds and a prime Hopkins would of beat him on points in a fairly close IMO and im British/English. I thought your comment about Hatton being overrated was spot on.
123jokaa 1 year ago
@123jokaaAlthough, I agree those results are possible, in this case we'll never know. That's what makes these debates so eternal. When people say Calzaghe wouldn't have beat prime JonesJr/Hopkins, they are thinking of the more famous 30+ Calzaghe fighting when actually he too was way past his best. The young Calzaghe was even faster and busier than the old and would have given those too all types of problems. He also had knockout power which he had to forgo later on due to broken hands.
edammade 1 year ago
@edammade I have a collection of all Joe Calzaghes fights which someone gave me, and although he could punch i don't beleive he had knockout power, Roy Jones Jr had knockout power i would say Calzaghe was more like Hopkins and had good power, i really beleive Roy Jones was the kind of talent that we don't see very often and in his prime would of beaten anyone and quite comfortably! Hopkins also a great fighter in his prime at about 33, he would be in my top 5 middleweights ever!
123jokaa 1 year ago
@123jokaa Thats a very ignorant point youve made, and there are many points that go against Jones and his career , he never left his comfort zone : America, Many top guys wanted to fight him but he avoided them Benn, Collins etc He had used steroids and admitted so. He fought Calzaghe only when it suited him the same goes for Hopkins. Also certain boxers have certain styles Eubanks and Herol Grahams style would have frustrated Jones, A pure blooded right hand from Chris would have decked jones
DaveyBoyEssexUK 1 year ago
@123jokaa Calzaghe had a good Punch in his prime even though hed suffered hand and wrist injurys going back to his amatuer days. Jones was fast and fought in bursts cos he was a thinker in the ring, Calzaghe was fast too and had great foot movement and had a higher workrate and stamina than Jones. If they had fought in their prime it would be 50/50, think about it Jones fought in bursts while Calzaghe would be throwing jabs and rights at Jones allnight constantly...
DaveyBoyEssexUK 1 year ago
@DaveyBoyEssexUK your exactly right. the truth hurts thats why people dont like the fact calzaghe dominated him. or the fact he beat bhop with ease (if you think bhop won you must be blind because the fight i watched calzaghe clearly deserved the decision). calzaghes workrate and pressure is enough to dominate them in thier prime or not!
sionpwns 11 months ago 2
@123jokaa Calzaghes chin was rock solid too and he had one of the best recovery rates going. Michael Watson and Gerald McClellan would have given both Jones and Calzaghe a heck of a fight. Nigel Benn offered to come over to America and fight Jones and let Jones have all the Money, Jones declined. Going back to the start and saying Jones would have beat anyone comfortably is just plain ignorant

That's right Armando. He didn't look himself because for the first time in his life, he met someone who was better.
tonypap1 2 years ago
Not even. It was well known that Curry struggled incredibly to make the weight limit of 147 pounds. A 100 percent Curry mops the floor with Honeyghan.
Armando316 2 years ago
Well...... we could debate that for an eternity. Curry was a great fighter so I cannot say that you are wrong.
But, the thing is, you cannot say you're right either. He was well beaten on the night.
Nobody mentioned that Hatton was fighting out of his weight level against Mayweather.
tonypap1 2 years ago
Oh yes it is. In fact, Mayweather is constantly criticized and rightfully so for never beating a legitimate weltwerweight. All his fights at the weight have been against guys that were either past their primes or of low quality.
Curry was beaten. No doubt. But he just didn't look right before or during that fight.

What's with you? The head butt caused the fight to be stopped - there's nothing "so called" about it. Then Gil Clancey said that Honeyghan almost certainly would have won the fight, head butt or no head butt.

I don't know what he said about Duran/Leonard. What he said regarding this fight was not offensive or biased.
kolst8406 3 years ago
No way was that an intentional headbutt. Watch any Bernard Hopkins or Holyfield fight to see deliberate headbutts.

57highland 4 years ago
Yeah Starling one.
He have Lloyd a straight boxing lesson and broke his jaw.
Vamoalla 4 years ago
I didnt see it, but hard to believe. I saw Starling fight Curry a few years before, and Starling got the boxing lesson for the whole fight and almost got KTFO in the last round. Starling must have had the best night of his life to beat Honey after Honey beat Curry after Curry beat him (Starling).
57highland 4 years ago
Can't triangulate that way. Styles make fights.
Starling had the style to beat Honeyghan.
It wasn't even close.
Vamoalla 4 years ago
Well, I'm glad Marlon did it, however he did it, because Honey was something of an ass.
57highland 4 years ago
Marlon had a few good years where he had the belt. Shortly after he won, he started working with Eddie Futch. His run ended when he was the victim of a cheap shot by Tomas Molinares, who sucker punched him after the bell ending a round (I forget what round it was) Marlon got knocked silly. He never regained his title.
Vamoalla 4 years ago
I remember when Marlon KO'd Mark Breland. Marlon was always cool but he really dissed Mark before the fight. But at least he backed it up with the KO.
57highland 4 years ago
Marlon was always something of a maverick - doing things his own way. He pretty much trained himself. He had a unique style that was pretty effective (except againt Curry, of course)
The title made him even better as did his association with Futch.
Oh, and I forgot...when Molinares caught him with that punch after the bell, Marlon fell awkwardly, and broke his leg. This also contributed to the beginning of the end for him.
Vamoalla 4 years ago
Far as I could tell, in the Curry fight Marlon's strategy was to get inside, kinda rush in, charge in, but Curry kept catching him coming in. Curry was also at his defensive peak, slipping many punches just by moving his head and shoulders. Curry probably really respected Marlon later on after Marlon beat Honey.
57highland 4 years ago
