wow ive been belly danicing for 4 yrs now and i cannot even imagine myself doing both at the same time im going to fall straight on my ass LOL but you look really good girl doing this (no homo)i never thought you can mix pole dancing and belly dancing but i guess you can
The music appears to have been added later/over dubbed...which made it hard for me to critique it as a dance of any sort. The movements are not responding to the music so there's a severe disconnect. Dynamic pole dancing or dynamic belly dancing requires that the dancer show an understanding and connection to her music, not just technique.
I'm sorry but I don't think pole dance and belly dance could really go together. They're just too different. Just look at the bodies of great pole dancers and belly dancers. They'are "sculpted" differntly. Pole dancers become more "muscular" (kind of) and strong and in a way flexible, while belly dancers are more "in control" of their bodies, they move faster and have this flow to their movements. Not to mention the musical differences in both styles. I just dont see this as a good combination.
I'm not denying that you have serious pole skills, but you are not honoring the middle eastern dance side of this video very well. Your bellydance movements are stiff and straight-legged and you don't have propper posture - which I can see being SERIOUSLY hard during pole dancing.
I would suggest in the future you rename your videos "middle eastern dance inspired pole dancing" because this is not raks sharki or any other middle eastern dance I've seen.
Bellydancer here who also takes pole class. I liked your experiment..and I'm jealous of your aerial body wave! I need to work on that one! I'd love to see you try another experiment with different bellydance music ( like another poster here I have a thing against techno-Arabic music)...I understand its what you had though ;)
I used to performe belly dancing and now begining pole dancing. This is an awsome combination!!!!!! I would love to learn how to belly dance on the pole.just got a pole of my own. Great JOb im so impressed!!!! Keep up the OUtstanding work!!!!
I own a dance studio & we teach Pole Dance ad well as Belly Dance. I have belly danced for 18 years & pole for 3. It's all just movement, & self expression, but even more so the most important thing to me is HOW I feel personally when I dance. I would never criticize anyone because I do not feel we have that right. Both of these forms of dance are exotic, quit trying to get away from it! Embrace it!
You are a wonderful dancer. You utilize every part of your body with grace and move with the music. I've seen dancers who knew what they were doing, technically, but still lacked the poise you display. Beautiful job.
ha i see a lot of bellydancers responding to this video..i too am a bellydancer..and have been a member of your forum for a year or so...i still do not have a pole..but my interest is hitting saturation point and i think i just need one..probably in the middle of March..your fusion of belly dancing and pole dancing is beautiful...and i agree you should take some belly dancing classes to add to your amazing repertoire of dance moves..and it could be seamless! BRAVO!!! and now i am convinced! hehe
@StudioVeena hehe I couldn't take it anymore...i just ordered a pole..i can't wait to get started..when i saw the video with your kids..i just couldn't resist anymore...i know it is going to be so much fun!...now to sign up for the year of lessons...hehe I can get started on stretches and strength...i think i could spend hours watching your videos..and i had to watch the one with the kids again...that is the cutest video i have ever seen
@StudioVeena ps..oh and i have 6 kids myself..and my oldest daughter..my 26 year old, has a pole set up in her living room...so it might be a fun surprise down the road, to show her what i can do..well once i can do it..haha! she is the one that introduced me to your videos a couple of years ago!
As another experienced belly dancer, brand new to pole dancing, I have no problem with the fusion of the two when it is clearly stated that it is in fact, a fusion of the two, as you've done here. You're a graceful and elegant dancer, but I I do think that with all the music that's out there, your style here might have been better served by a slow, sensual piece of music, rather than the arabic-techno kind of style that you chose. :) But still very nicely done.
it would be near impossible to argue about the quality and beauty of the body painting the musik in this performance........ rather unique one might say !
Please don't take this the wrong way...I'm not a "hater". I LOVE pole dancing but I would never dream of fusing the two together...the cultural context and vocabulary are just so different and to a belly dancer, it just looks awkward.. Maybe before doing anymore Pole-Belly Fusion, you might want to start training in belly dancing, learning about the different rhythms, and the cultural context first - it's not just about a couple of hip movements and holding a veil while wearing a coin scarf :)

@NicoleDosei The people who showed their disdain to me had a very skewed vision of pole dance. It might also be partly due to the fact that belly dance had a hard time getting rid of a similar stigma. I think they were worried that the "illegitimacy" of pole dance would ruin all their work. Once I explained what a great workout it is they softened their tone. I don't really take web haters seriously. I rather... "Be the change you want to see in the world." ^_^
This is amazing Veena! I thought about doing this when I followed Shimmy on tv, I love it!.I had no idea so many pole dancers are incorporating the two! However, I had no idea that meshing the styles of dance together was taboo. I can't see why. I think it is creative. I thought of trying this but I'm scared my hip scarf coins will scratch my pole.... :/ I haven't gotten them yet I just ordered them but anyway I like the shimmys mixed with the pole it is very pretty to watch.
@ShayShay21489 Mostly because we've worked very hard to separate the stripper stigma from bellydance; this only fuses it. While its a form of exercise that requires strength and skill, its still heavily associated with stripping. That's what's got the BD community's hip scarf in a twist.
For the dancer herself, you have a lovely presence, and a graceful way of moving. Please do not think that I am criticizing you personally. I am merely addressing the context of the two forms.
@nightdancer2876 I understand and I am not offended. I take pride in what I do as a pole dancer. Just like belly dancers have struggled with gaining respect we as pole dancers are struggling as well. Those of us who use pole dancing as a form of fitness are tired of being referred to as strippers. We want to be respected for the hard work and dedication that goes into pole dancing. That seems to be overlooked when it is compared to stripping.
@ShayShay21489 As well you should. It takes a flexibility and strength that most people simply do not have. As for referred to as strippers, it is an attitude we all deal with, especially out of men that only see a hot chick moving around. *annoyed* By the way, I watched your video for your sister. Please look into actually taking a BD class. You are incredibly expressive, and for us, thats 75% of the game.
@nightdancer2876 I'm sorry but maybe you have me confused with someone else. I haven't posted any vids to youtube yet and I didn't make a belly dance vid for my sister... You must be thinking of someone else.
@nightdancer2876 The purpose of the dance was a CHALLENGE did you read the description?? To do something challenging that you wouldn't normally do. I'm up front about the fact that I'm not a belly dancer. My goal isn't to make everyone think belly dance OR pole dance is stripping...anyone who thinks that way is naive in their thoughts of pole dance. There are 3 aspects to pole ART, SPORT, and EXOTIC and I respect them ALL. :-) DANCE IS DANCE...with or without clothing an expression of music!
Girl you got some pole skills! But I gotta say I didn't see any bellydance. I know nothing about pole dance but I bet there is a bunch of technique behind it, same with belly dance. Gotta learn to belly dance before you can fuse it. But once you do I bet it would rock :)
@dirdybirdy101 Yes, it is too good. The art of dance, in all its forms, has worked hard to disassociate itself from negative connotation. This isnt helping matters.
Obviously we have different views on what pole dancing is about. You can't see past the pole. It's merely a prop. Yes, there is a connection to strip clubs but re-invention is nothing new. So many things that were once taboo are now acceptable and even respected. People with your views are what makes the world smaller.
Reading what you've written about belly dancing and the struggle to remove the stripper stigma, i would've thought you'd be more empathetic to pole dancing.
Simply, utterly amazing...you really do have "dancing" in your bones Veena! ..and at 3:41 you had that whole ab isolation thing going in the body wave....COOL! The outfit was very sexy...your closet must be filled with goodies, that's for sure..!
I think they were being elitist in my opinion. I'm sure those same people did not have a problem with it when the likes of Shakira, Britney Spears and when choreographers use cerain moves in their performances.
