  • is it true that u have to have strong callast to play this??

    please send me some help...

  • @acdckiller12 Do you mean, strong callused fingers? Playing the guitar will eventually toughen up your fingertips because of the way you have to press on the steel strings to make chords/notes.

  • @inamonianim yeahh i mean "strong callused fingers" but like how do u get strong callused fingers for ur left hand??

  • @acdckiller12 Are you left handed? Because the hand that you use to press on the strings will actually get more roughed up than the one used to strum. That said, you don't need to have tough fingers but it does help because soft fingers are more easily hurt by steel strings. A lot of people say it hurts their fingers when they start playing. It's a skill you really have to work for! :)

  • Tommy provides tab books for most of his tunes; DVD tutorials; and special recordings for earphone-listening. All so others can play them. I have never seen any other guitarist so generous. Only completely self-centered egotists do not share their technique. Obviously, Tommy is not one of them. Such excellence. Such a proponent of playing the guitar. The epitome of a master.

  • it's AMAZING!

  • So awesome!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Around 0:30 or so...THAT's a chord stretch that will make you realize you are rusty! I love it!

  • I think the camera man jizzed in his pants at @ 1:29

  • 0:32 no way to play this chord with a human hand...

sounds like clare de lune :D

  • @Johnoooh Absolutely!

  • @Johnoooh It's a part of his arrangement of Michelle

  • " and what I'm just doing is "

  • Everyone know thats tommy is one of the best harmonics guitar players...

Somewhere over the rainbow harmonics is awesome, i think the best i have ever heared

  • Lovely harmonics, He is a bit special isn't he, Where does he get all his ideas from?

  • @pauljannone123

from many ^^ he always says: "steal, steal, steal" lol I think he must have borrowed this harmonics from lenny breau´s. You may want to check "Tommy Emmanuel at Švandovo Theater" put that in the browser bar and watch and enjoy that interview. It´s a pleasure to listen to him, there he talks about these things and demostrates. Best wishes, from Arg.

  • Injun, would you please stop whoever you are? This is Tommy Emmanuel's channel and he is in a league all of his own and one of the very best I've ever seen/heard.

5 stars plus infinity for Mr. Emmanuel's mastery.

  • Whats the song he keeps playing like at :51

    Amazing playing

  • Sounds like a little out-take from his arrangement of a Beatles song called "Michelle".

  • Ah thats it

    Thanks mate

  • you're welcome brother!

  • makes me cry hearing those notes Love it hope to see you here down under in June~july Tommy can't wait :D

  • truly amazing... the feel to do that, I'm speechless

  • great

  • This is a private video of Alex van Voorst...

  • Oh, now I see how to do it. I'm gonna go play it right now! Pfff

  • do you need a thumbpick to do this?

  • you dont need a thumbpick, but it does help as the thumb is picking the harmonics, the third finger does the open notes - so the thumbpick helps make the harmonics ring more clearly so they don't get drowned out by the open notes.

  • Some people use a flatpick. They hold it between their thumb and middle finger, and use their index finger to 'fret' the harminics. The rest is just the same as if you were using a thumbpick.

  • In my opinion you do, I can do it without a pick but the hand position is uncomfortable, because a thumb pick point sideways from the thumb the writs and hand position is as relaxed as Tommy's is. Hope this helps

  • Ohhh men ! I'm crying ! -.-'

  • just...WOW!!!

  • great vid if ur tryin 2 learn how 2 do this watch parts :29 - 1:03... its really shows how hes playin this technique and the chord hes usin. i learned how 2 play that part so trust me it teaches pretty good

  • plucking w/harmonics, syncopated. FU Tommy!!

  • so un believe able !!! I just saw him @ house of blues tonight. words can't describe, but they did say a LIVE DVD is coming out soon. AWESOME.

  • I'm pretty sure he's playing an intro to his cover of "Michelle" by The Beatles

  • yeah he is :-) he played the same intro live when he was going to play michelle :D

  • the best of the best!! flawless harp harmonic :D

  • that's simply beautiful

  • Beautiful work.

  • tommys just demostrating how you can incorperate these harp harmonics as an effect to enhance a tune, hes just showing this guy how to do it ,hes not playing a tune ,but if you know tommys music ,hes the most musical person ,and these harmonics are thrown in once in a while for a effect

  • Where's the music? do you not hear the beautiful intervals I do? I hear beautiful harp like music played on guitar

  • He's showing a technique. You can't hear music in what he's doing? Can you hear?

  • you're pretty... dumb. yup.

  • what are the chord shapes at the end?

  • @8lecWoosley after two years I think i finally got it, x97999,747444,074444,x43435,242322,012200 try it out

  • ...hot

  • gimp your a fagot

  • Maybe he's in awe.

  • one of the finest musicians ive ever heard!!this is guitars 'era'!!

  • the guitar era has never, and will never end.

look at the evolution even from 1900 - 2000. the elecrtic guitar was made, i dunno how old the "harp guitar" is... i wonder what's next? they allready have auto tuning guitars.

  • Baritone & half size parlour guitars, for low & high tunings... amazing...

  • The middle part sounds like the start of Cinema Show by Genesis.

  • ugh whats those chord shapes again???

  • Heaven must be missing an Angel ! ! !? Tommy playing harmonics :)!!! ((rare!))

  • well said man!

  • too good...

  • F*K!! that's SOOOOO HHHOOOTTTTT!!!

how do you produce that 'harmonics' sound??

    *_^LEI-onsay

  • he has a lesson on how to do it

its on you tube its called harmonics lesson

  • hehehe..Thanx but I found it like 5minutes after I wrote that comment! LOL =P

I kind-of got the hang of it. So how long have ya been playing Nick?

    *_^LEI-onsay

  • it is called the insurance sketch!

    haha lol

  • waterfalls, your can hear the water flow....yeah.

  • no matter how much i think my ears have mastered hearing what he plays, i stumble upon things i can't believe.

  • the song "up from down under" by him uses almost all of these techniques.

  • thats how to shred,

  • those dissonants, lenny breau and danny gatton, mixed

  • It's not the intro to Somewhere over the rainbow but still i don't know where this song comes from and i'd like to know

  • what song is this off of

  • I could be wrong but I think it is from the intro of his arrangement of Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Watching Tommy play is like being smiled upon by an angel - his playing is not of this world.

  • Tommy you're...........waouuuuuw......

  • magic

  • wonderful!

  • aha almost sounds like a harp at the 1m20s mark

  • Hence the term "harp harmonics"

  • So beautiful, so dreamy... It makes me fell asleep. Music really moves boundaries... Saw Tommy once in Slovenia, probably the best concert in my life to date

  • A friend just turned me on to Tommy's music, I think I am in love....awestruck is the only word I can think of. He is absolutely marvelous I will pass this on to everyone!!!!!!!!!!!Ladykitty1225

  • That is totally, utterly amazing.

  • so if i get it right, he plays the note once without damping it with his index finger, and then once with the damping. (no damping : thumb, with damping : other finger)

  • holy fawk.

  • hes playing alot of harmonics from his song called Somewhere Over The Rainbow (Wizard Of Oz)

  • i've seen him once, going to see him again best show ever, his songs are so fun to learn on guitar

  • Wow, thats really amazing! I'm going to try to learn that!

  • Clearly, Tommy has listened to a LOT of Lenny Breau. Good on him >_<

  • i just bought 6 tickets to see this fella :D

  • saw him twice, best you will ever see!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Enjoy.

  • now i know why he is vai's favourite

  • you'd think this man is a god but i saw him cover don't fer the reaper and it was lacking in cowbell, oh yes it was, so is he any good?

  • he is god.

  • Oh i get the feeling of a disney movie haha..

  • lol that's what heaven sounds like :P

  • he and the kangaroos

  • he and the kangaroos

  • If Australia were ever invaded, he would be the only thing worth taking.

  • lol, brilliant!

  • HAHAHA, I'm going to have to agree with you on that, unless TE was around the world touring, then it would be all of his belongings

  • I have now seen the greatest living guitarist (and it makes me feel like giving up trying to learn when tommy makes it all look so bloody simple keep it up tommy and thanks for posting sammyseal .

  • this guy could play guitar amazingly since the day he was born, he ws the lead guitarist in a band at the age of 4, he was born an unreal guitarist...

  • i think i should have my eyes and ears sewed shut after that to keep it in me forever.

  • It doesn't get much better than Tommy Emmanuel

  • Holy.. that was awesome, man...

  • Oh my God! what on earth was that? That's one of the most beautiful and awesome display of harp mimicry, harmonic playing I've ever seen on guitar. Wow! Although I've seen Eric Johnson play this kind of stuff too which he incorporated in his style through the years, still this one is also amazing to watch and listen too and is at par with what Eric Johnson does. I'm speechless lol.

  • thats the most gorgeous thing ive ever heard. TE will live on

  • awesome video .

  • love tommy... valvetrom is right. he is a real componist,a musician-master. i just love what he playes...so much!

  • Wow thats some insane technique he has

  • His guitar skills are better than people's skills in their own careers... In other words, if everyone was as obsessed with what they do as much as he is with the guitar, it would be incredible.

  • what a stupid comment

  • Another boss ...

  • It's like a harp. Very nice.

  • jesus wept!...and i feel like weeping as well after hearing that..amazing!

  • He is the dogs bollocks! Gives me joy to hear his playing.

  • its sounds like a harp...very cool

  • gorgeous

  • Tommy, like Mozart is a divine incarnation, humor and willing to please, oozes out all the time, RAMA, Krishna,Christ ,Kabir, Sai Baba have all these qualities to make everyone happy on the inside.

  • Until I actually see his right fingers picking, I will assume someone is playing harp in the background.

  • if I was on this earth 500 year I probably couldn't ever play as good as Tommy ! Now thats God given talent !

  • This tecnique was mainly used by Jazz guitar player Lenny Breau... Very beautiful stuff!

  • He has a sad family story of late, I think. I hope it goes better for him: however a friend music can be, it will never replace a human touch. See Chaplin for details.

  • sick!

  • He has never had any real teacher. He and his brother Phil started to pick up things by ear. Tommy plays everything from his head and has not marked up anything from what he plays. Ah yeah and he started giveing guitar lessons for money when he was 12 years young. What a legend. This man will remain for ever, even if he him self has gone.

  • i wonder if he is a really schooled guitarist he seems to know what he is doing theory wise and with all the chords he uses

  • Absolutely stunning

  • woah

  • When Tommy said in the video he is using those shapes, does anyone have the actual chords he used?

  • Boogielicious, Bodatious,Picked, Plucked, Slapped, Punched, Resounding Acoustical Transgretion against the devil.

  • I Like Tommy Emmanuel for playing and teaching too

  • Too much skill!

  • Great harmonics from a drummer who just happens to play guitar aswell :)

  • oh... hot dog!!! it's educational too!!!

  • lovey like it

  • Totally amazing ... He has such a strong spirit comin' out of his playin' ... Great ...

  • Tommy Emmanuell is da shit!! =D

  • Tough tequnique, man!

  • making his guitar sound like a harp, it's brilliant

  • I wish, more than anything in the world, that I could see the chord shapes he is playing at the end. Why couldn't he have moved the camera a little to the right? I've never seen anything like that though - stunning.

  • So great. I love his playing style, I wish i could be like him!

  • He makes it sound so easy.

  • the guy was like..ahh..ok..yeah..wow...ok...but im sure he was lost..
