i really like how you teach, you break it down into peaces that helps a lot, some of these guitar players don't slow it down for you and they only show you once. thanks
great teaching style. thanks, gonna give this one a go 2mrw on my RG7421 ... thinking of getting a 7420 like yours butheard the lo trs 7 wasn't very good (tonewise). yours sounds good (could be your playing tho! ;)). may I ask how you find it? Cheers
Thx for the video man ... I noticed that you did a down up up down for the first 4 notes of the first bar ... what kinda picking style is that ? Does it make pickign more efficient ? i've always had problems with sychronizing my picking and fretting hand, so my notes are not as clean as it should be ... Any tips to help me on that ? thx !
My picking hand will do whatever now but I'm picking it like that as the two upstroke notes are on the offbeat in the 6/8 time sig. The idea is to do downstrokes on the beat and upstrokes on the upbeat with alternate picking, helps keeop things tight timing wise
Regarding synching up the hands, take things nice and slowly to nail the accuracy, then as you up the tempo you maintain that accuracy and relaxed but controlled feel. Speeding it up is actually the easier thing to do once you have the accuracy nailed :). Also there are no hard fast rules for picking, some people will economy pick others alternate, some all with downstrokes etc. whatever works to enable the wanted sounds to come out.
I've never seen him play it with a six string. If he did he'd either have to have the bass player play that low B or be playing a baritone, which is pointless if you have 6 string and 7 string signature Music Man guitars :).
i saw him on G3 this year...i was pretty damn close to the stage..there's no way in hell he was playing that song with a 6-string.
the other thing is, a 7-string can capture the essence of the song more than a 6 string or baritone guitar could, just cause of how it's built...and on a 7-string you'll get more clarity out of the low B vs on a de-tuned 6 string...i've played some baritones, and even they aren't as good as say, a JP sig. or a Hellraiser.
I d'ont know JOhn Petrucci but the riff is very good, i'm gonna do some research. You're sound is so good, in every clip you did . If one day you don't know witch riff to pick i would suggest explain you're set-up because i think we are all dying for it ...lol
You don't need to research too much, Mr Petrucci is one of the best and most inspirational guitarists of our time. Him being the guitar player of the progressive metal band Dream Theater is believed to be one of the most influational players nowadays. chack his videos:)
Petrucci is awesome. He's mentioned in virtually every guitar magazine. He's also the guitarist and founding member of Dream Theater, an awesome band full of proficient musicians. Every record they make is different from the last, they go from playing some of the heaviest riffs you've ever heard to the most beautiful melodic guitar you could imagine. Dream Theater in 2 words...Sublime & Talented.
It's an RG7420 from 2000 with upgraded pickups (Tone Zones), you can see them pop on eBay now and again. I'd recommend checking out the RG7321 available these days, or even an old RG7620 as it has a better trem than the RG7420.
The riff *could* be played on a baritone guitar, tuned B E A D G B, or on a six string tuned way down to have the same tuning, but you'd need pretty thick strings ;).
awesome.

Sweet! :D
TBF these days Petrucci make any guitar look like a Mandolin when he plays one.
