There are few technique issues you should probably address in the future. The first is the hands. Try playing with your palms down (flat) to maximize wrist motion for each stroke. Not only will you get more power and accuracy, but it will allow you to keep all your fingers on the stick--which equals control. (Also, don't rest your left hand on your leg when it is tacet)
Also, sit a bit lower (legs parallel to the floor). It'll help with rimshots and foot control.
