@giants416 While Marty's shutouts are impressive, the fact that Miller still bested him (and everyone) in save% & GAA in spite of having fewer SOs points towards his greater consistency game in and game out, and the sheer volume of shots he often had to face was ridiculous. Was Marty "penalized" for playing on a better team, behind a far superior defense? Perhaps, but the fact is that Miller and Bryzgalov did more with less, and the GMs recognized that.
@giants416 Oh absolutely, Brodeur played more games than any other goalie...and yet Miller STILL topped him in sheer number of saves made over the course of the season. Interesting, no? And I'd argue that save% and GAA are a more accurate measure of a goalie's performance than wins, which are the most team-based goaltending stat; you can make 60 sparkling saves, but if your skaters can't score worth a damn, you don't get the W. (I mean, HUET has more wins than Vokoun. Who would you rather have?)
It's hysterical how people just find ways to bash legends because they don't play for their team. I'm sure Yankee haters think Mickey Mantle was overrated too right? lol. They don't give awards based on teams, only stats. Who led the league in wins? Marty. Who led the league in Shutouts? Marty. Miller had .04 better in GAA, a whopping amount better. Marty deserved #5 no matter what anyone says.
@giants416 Brodeur has a few more wins than Miller but even more losses, so frankly, that's a wash. And excluding Rask, who only played half a season, who had the best save percentage and GAA in the league? Miller. (Brodeur's save% this season was only good enough for 13th, BTW, even though he faced fewer shots!) I have all the respect in the world for Marty, who's one of the all-time greats, but THIS YEAR, he was a distant third to Miller and Bryzgalov...and the right guy took home the Vezina.
@centzon Funny how you admit more wins AND losses...what does that tell you? Marty played more GAMES, most in the NHL actually for goalies. So with that, more chances to get rocked, meaning horrible GAA, but he only was .04 worse than Miller...failed to mention shutouts (who led in that?) And save % is difficult when your defense doesn't allow 40 shots per game. Brodeur would basically have to shut out every night to be in the top % in that stat. They penalized Brodeur for being a workhorse
