  • The stairs should always be one less tread than riseers. The last riser is at the finished floor height.

  • Thanks for the info! Great vid!

  • These steps will be a danger in 5 years. You pretty much are walking up a support base of a 2X5. If he would have taken the time to cut rabbit grooves in it and slid the steps in then maybe it would hold for 25-30 years if properly treated and sealed. As it is, he's exposed a lot of end grain that was bought and paid for by using such wide wood and weakened it completely by cutting out notches. What a waste and misuse of material.

  • i cant belive how easy you made this look . thank you

  • you are great at explaining how to do it thanks

  • I used to be a contractor and I now teach Construction Technology to high school students and your video really helped me brush up on cutting stair stringers. Thanks.

  • Thank You Sir!

  • Excellent teaching 'presence', content and delivery. Maybe begin presentation by defining terminology. If I wasn't a beginner I wouldn't be watching and words like 'rise', stringer, run... are new.

Nevertheless, a great teaching video and I'm going to do my own stairs. Thank you.

  • Thanks. A well organised and thought out video. Wayne is very clear and a good teacher. Easy to follow.

  • great video but it makes me cringe when americans say 2x4 when its clearly 4x2

  • thanks great info and easy to follow

  • Thank you Wayne. Clear and easy to follow. Also your tip about using an off cut and 2 small clamps (on the carpenter's square) was brilliant, enabling me to get the pencil lines EXACTLY right. My deck stairs are finished!!

  • As a person with with a learning disability i have to say that this video was very informative, and easy to understand. One thing i recommend is if you are doing the layout template on a piece of scrap make sure it is perfectly square first before even starting the layout. Better than scrap use a 1 X 12 piece of pine, or hardboard. Personally i found it easier, and more accurate just to layout the stringer without the template, but the template is great for sampling the layout before deciding.

  • This is a really clear, concise, and accurate explanation. Thank you.

  • There is no more question about building deck stairs..........

    Real professional's Perfect explanation.......

  • Excellent video, thanks a bunch man!!

  • you made this easy for me to now build my loft stairs thx dudeeee

  • Very nice clear instructions, thanks.

  • For the novice like me, making that template is key. Thanks

  • Thanks!

  • include the upper deck as a step. steps are treads plus one.

  • Very helpful compared to other videos. All other videos I've seen start with the stringer template already drawn, then they show you how to cut them. I can work a saw, just wanted to know how to lay out a proper stringer. This video is better than the DIY Network videos too.
