For all but the longest hauls, I leave the rear fuselage tanks empty. When I do need the range, I burn them off first. I did several flights at certain mixture/throttle settings, and developed a fuel consumption chart, so I can time tanks to within a few minutes. I actively manage tanks so i can burn them off in sequence.
The Vega is a pleasant aircraft to fly, but to see forward during approaches, I just sideslip for brief periods to get lined up.
Nice landing! I enjoy flying the Vega on FS2004; it's a real handful with a full load of gas; for shorter flights I fill all the tanks to 50% to make it handle better. You're right, the visibility is very bad forward; you've got a canopy rib right in front of you that blocks your view of the runway until you're almost on top of it! To slow her down to 75-80mph for landing, I pull back on the stick a bit to raise the nose from time to time during the approach.
Nice. Loved the pilot's handling of the plane!
