I'm half-Filipino, and certainly no McCain fan...but I remember that whole flack about his use of the word gook, and I think too much was made of it. To McCain, a former POW, "hating gooks" is like my grandpop, a WW2 vet hating "krauts." Don't get me wrong, if the word were applied to the average Asian walking down the street, I would have a MAJOR problem with it. McCain used it as a soldier's word, against his enemy- the VC. I've Vietnamese, had been a McCain supporter until he was open about the use of the word. My parents escaped VN under very harsh conditions, like the other Viets who made it to US. When we first arrived, many American racists, like KKK, called us gooks. Its is unbelievable that someone that is suppose to be a role model like a US senator would do that.
The stupid part is McCain is not a racist, but yet he used a racial slur. I've heard he's helped many Vietnamese folks.
