The poem at the beginning of the song is called "Anthem For Doomed Youth" by Wilfred Owen who was a soldier in World War 1 who was killed just days before the war ended. I had to memorize the whole damn poem for an American Literature class in college. Another piece of trivia is that Bruce skips over a line between "Only the stuttering rifle's rapid rattle" and "No mockeries now for them, no prayers nor bells". I remember reading the poem in the class and wondering where I'd heard it before...
