Johns Hopkins University has long examined the marriage between the jews and mental illness. Collective psychosis compels the jews to continually perform evil acts so that the inevitable response can subsequently be used to grow their twisted "religion of persecution". More jew-haters are always required in order to maintain Judaism which would have expired long ago without the numerous historical atrocity stories such as "Exodus", "Fall of Jerusalem" and "Holocaust" which are total fiction.
Went in to my local Blockbuster and guess what, the staff had this movie on their 'Suggested' list on display. So cool. I asked which staff member was behind the suggestion and they said they all were behind it. These are young 20 something folks and that gave me a real boost for the day. I thanked them for their courage considering the fundie town we are residing in. A stone's throw away from the store, a dozen folks holding biblical quote signs on a major thoroughfare. That removed my smile.
Epic film and we need to have a sequel as soon as possible. Funny thing, I live in a small town in the southern US and we have two movie houses. 'Expelled' was featured when it came out but 'Religulous' wasn't!! Go fig. Wonder if it was a business decision or a personal one on behalf of the owners of those facilities? HMMMMMM
It was showing 100 miles away in a bigger city. I had to wait for the rental to be available. Hope it runs again in more places so that we can 'save' some delusionals.
Don't worry here in Albuqerque NM they have tons of copies in the city library paid for by taxpayers but no "Expelled" . Is this a fair exchange of ideas? p.s. This Christian watched the documentary, While he made a good argument for religion's ills, it would be a scarier world if we didn't have the Ten commandments.
Wonderful news about your library. That gives me hope for change.
As to the 10 rules from a holy book written by men, George Carlin had a good talk about them. He narrowed them down to two good ones. The scarier thing is that people literally believe in their holy books being put together by a god and base their decisions in life on that fairytale compilation. I would rather see them use a Disney tale myself. At least it wouldn't be nearly as violent. As to Expelled being fair? lol
Okay you totally believe what these comedians say as fact and a economist/lawyer/screenwriter/actor/government official as one who believes in fairy tales? Besides I'd argue Judeo-Christian belief has done more positive things than negative...The USA and western society is a prime example. Ironic, Maher's favorite person is Martin Luther King Jr. a guy who totally believed in the Bible.. Is MLK misguided?
I find myself drawn to folks who are not delusional since they speak my 'language'. Lots of professionals of all stripes are delusional with belief in sky daddy(it's called compartmentalization). I disagree on the "more positive things than negative" thing. I can point you to many examples to support my position. Here are two:
-more theists in jail than atheists in the USA(% to society)
"I'd argue Judeo-Christian belief has done more positive than negative"
So the crusades weren't negative? Lynching and burning witches isn't negative? how about "helping"/slaughter of American indigenous tribes by "bringing God to the heathens?" These are just one religion's actions in generally recent history.
The only "Good" your God has ever done was stay out of the way.
The bible been revised & corrupted at LEAST 5 major times. Correct me if I'm wrong but no God has told Man to do this.
I always find folks who reply in long paragraphs not answering simple questions i.e. MLK's beliefs being relavent. If SAX read Alex De Tocquevilles "Democracy in America" or the Declaration of Independance he may have more of my respect. It would worry me if he said freedom came from man.

Have you ever read the Bible? Read it for yourself then judge. It wasn't written by 1 person, it was written by 40 authors. You can deny that it is true, and the Bible talks about that. How can we trust it? The Bible talks about that too, and discover for yourself why we believe in what we believe in. There are always manipulations to other religions that may proclaim to be Christ-like, and have His name, so get a good Bible, and stick to the word and ask lots of questions. Ignorance is bliss.
Hear me, for I bring the Holy Word! Be good, be nice. This is the true word. I am God, I speak the truth. And worship me and only me. I love you all. I'll torture you for eternity if you disobey me And a quick prophecy: The false and mighty will fall when faith reaches the turning point! There will be a second coming! Wars and starvation will precede it! 345 people told me this, I just wrote it down. It is true, because it's the words of God, who only speaks true, because he said so.
Saw this, liked it quite a bit. It wasn't QUITE what I was expecting, though; it's really hard to explain why not.
I think that in some ways, it just didn't hit hard enough. I think perhaps if the ratio of "Isn't this religion stufff hilariously bizarre?" to "This is dangerous and should probably go away forever," had been reversed, I would have dug it more...that's probably the best way I can describe it.
Possibly...but I'm trying to imagine just how many minds this movie changed.
It preached to my choir; my mind wasn't changed at all ...or if it was, it was a change of degree rather than of kind.
Anyone too terribly much like the people depicted in the film probably went just to see how offensive it was to their beliefs; likely their minds weren't changed.
So why not pull out all the stops and say your message, no matter how controversial?
And it was...although not at the end; I won't give it away, but the end of the movie has a very important and serious message that everything else was leading up to.
Anyway, I think Penn & Teller did a better job in meshing comedy with information in their episodes of Bullshit! that covered the bible and holier than thou people...
considering how marginalized atheists are in society, a small step is sometimes the best step. just getting people to possibly laugh at something that previously was taboo is a pretty significant step. people don't question religion because they fear repercussions. if you can laugh at it, it's not as scary anymore.
I always find it strange when people talk about fearing repercussions from voicing an opinion. Maybe it's just because I've spent my entire life (barring those four months in Santa Cruz) in either New England or Seattle, but I've NEVER experienced repercussions simply from speaking my mind. On any topic.
And I'm a left-wing atheist liberal lesbian with attitude. And, perhaps paradoxically, a rabid love of Star Wars. Do you think for a MOMENT that I've never made any controversial statements?
when christians proselytize, they love to use fear tactics like Hell and eternal damnation to scare us into believing. when christians show doubt, they usually see a backlash from their christian friends who try to "save" them. i'm at a pretty liberal school, but i still get concerned citizens fearing for my soul when they find out i'm an atheist.
my previous comment was generally aimed more at christians and not skeptics, who already are willing to question religion.
You...haven't seen the movie yet, have you? Fear tactics are used by both sides, believe me.
The difference? When Bill Maher tells us to be afraid of religion and the religious, he has something tangible which manifests in the real world with which to scare us.
I won't give it away--though if you've watched Maher's show "Real Time", you've already heard it--but...fear is not an argument which is solely the province of christianity and other religions.
nah, haven't seen the movie yet, but i love Real Time. i guess i don't see Maher's use of fear as necessarily wrong since the roots of them are manifest in society. religion uses fear of things that are not clearly evident. fear of a government favoring one religious group over another is legitimate; fear of a space god torturing us forever is...less so.
i actually prefer the Atheist Experience when it comes to this stuff. maher will always be more of a comedian to me.
Oh, I didn't mean to imply that Maher's use of fear is wrong, only that it's a method used to convince by both sides.
But I don't see Maher as solely a comedian. Much like, say, Keith Olbermann or Rachel Maddow, Maher managed to keep news and issues from being dull by injecting humor and personality into their presentation; it's part of his appeal.
I love the Atheist Experience too, BTW. I don't watch it live, but the YouTube clips are brilliant. :)
well, i technically group olbermann with maher as well, but i take their reports with a grain of salt since they have a pretty clear bias, even if it generally matches my own. if i really want the news, i'll just stick to the BBC. if i want real comedy, i just watch fox news.
Well, I live in the US; I don't have the BBC. (And even if I did, I don't own a TV; I'm a very BAD American. Heh. It's just my luck that Olbermann and Maddow put out podcasts.)
FOX News just makes me angry enough to chew glass; I try to avoid it.
I remember a bit back, the Answer in Genesis head sending out a letter, talking about how Bill Maher had tricked his way into one of their museums and how evil this movie was going to be. I remember laughing so hard I cried when I read the letter. I wonder how much of that footage made it in. I don't always agree with Bill M, but I do like how he words his thoughts and questions. A must see that will probably have to wait to DVD. Not gonna make a lot of screens in KS I bet.
Oh ok. If you haven't seen it's a great movie, I saw it twice in theaters. Great movie, especially the part about scientology haha. Have you seen it yet?
I am quite curious to watch it, have to check if a release date is set for a DVD, none of the theaters around where I lived hosted the movie when it came out.
It was a pretty good movie, but I came away a bit disappointed. My expectations were probably a bit too high, and it's always funnier when you watch a comedy with a good size crowd. There was less than 10 people in the theater when I watched it.
Isn't Maher Jewish?
