Unless you're a perfectionist cosplayer and the anime you like firmly states it takes place in Japan with Japanese people, like Durarara!!, then you can be any enthicity. Okay, guys, Cosplay is not really "all about" anything. People have different interpretations of it, so it has no real dictionary meaning. Some people cosplay for fun, because they like that character and want other people to see that. Others cosplay because they want to really "bring that character to life" and try to make it perfect. i'm so tired of seeing girls cosplay as guy characters: first of all you can obviously tell it's a girl, secondly, it doesn't feel like the real character when a girl dresses as a guy, thirdly, it would be MUCH more impressive to see a guy successfully pull it off, because even though in anime and manga they may look like girls, they are NOT girls. No! It isn't only about the costume. What does the costume justice is if you fit the role of the character. So if you were trying to cosplay as wonder woman, but you are black it would not work. Same thing goes for westerners cosplaying anime characters. If you want it to look good, you cosplay as a character that has similar features.

@Arriss3 true, but it is possible for people of other races to pull it off, regardless of race. if they get the feel of the character down, they can pull off the character. also, the races of a lot of characters isn't really mentioned much, but yes it is presumably asian based on the names and where they're from BUT if you have the facial features you can pull off the character no matter what race you are. Also, a lot of characters tend to have big round eyes, which a lot of asians dont have.
@Arriss3 and the structure of the face is not necessarily based on asians, most anime characters have a face that can be portrayed by multiple races. for instance if an anime character has big eyes, a short nose and full lips, then someone who has those features or similar features can pull it off regardless of race.

they are all pretty good. But you should never put only asians with the title 'Perfection cosplayers'. Seeing as there are like a million people not belonging to that race, that do perfect cosplay. haha.
They're good but all pretty simple. Many cosplays at least in England are far more impressive and complicated. It's nice to do a simple cosplay, but if it's simple then it should be done well, there is less of an excuse when it comes to quality. You should check out some european cosplays as there are some more impressive ones out there and race doesn't dictate how much you resemble a character after all quite a few anime characters are made to look like gaikokujin.
@shadedfromdarkness It doesnt matter if its simple or not, some outfits are really simple indeed, but the real goal of a cosplayer besides being a lifestyle is achieve to be like the character you most like and feel confortable with, and it doesnt really matter if they use a piece of cloth, but id that cloth is treated well it will result perfect...I mean look at the Pyramid Head cosplay, even though it isnt a manga character or anime but a game. The most important thin IS TO HAVE FUN! ^^

From experience of cons in the uk theres are good cosplays, I've seen a few good american, european, and asian cosplays. There are bad asian cosplays too. I'm a pugilist, I run, swim and play football, so I'm not unfit. I practice make up, make props, and sew. I have fun cosplaying. It's unfair to generalise that's all I'm saying.

@BladedShotgun You should google it I've been to at least 10 different events held around the uk cosplaywise. People can be arses no matter where you're from chav's are not a dying breed. Don't be forced by other peoples standards, cosplay as anyone as long as you have a costume have fun with it. It doesn't matter if you're a little shorter/taller/heavier/lighter whatever if you like the character do it, don't worry what people think and if worried you can always go with a friend.
that's because most anime characters are supposed to be asian.....so they do look cute and sexy in cosplay...but some westerners can pull it off too...

(: i have most of these pictures in my favorites on deviantart and a majority of them aren't edited.. and most of them aren't taken by photographers, i'm sorry that unlike you, some people have good quality cameras! i have a camera and it brightens pictures, and immediately has a setting to make it look better/flawless so why be so weird about it? everybody wants a good cosplayer and once they get it, they even complain about THAT. damn..

they are all pretty good. But you should never put only asians with the title 'Perfection cosplayers'. Seeing as there are like a million people not belonging to that race, that do perfect cosplay. haha.

They're good but all pretty simple. Many cosplays at least in England are far more impressive and complicated. It's nice to do a simple cosplay, but if it's simple then it should be done well, there is less of an excuse when it comes to quality. You should check out some european cosplays as there are some more impressive ones out there and race doesn't dictate how much you resemble a character after all quite a few anime characters are made to look like gaikokujin.

@shadedfromdarkness It doesnt matter if its simple or not, some outfits are really simple indeed, but the real goal of a cosplayer besides being a lifestyle is achieve to be like the character you most like and feel confortable with, and it doesnt really matter if they use a piece of cloth, but id that cloth is treated well it will result perfect...I mean look at the Pyramid Head cosplay, even though it isnt a manga character or anime but a game. The most important thin IS TO HAVE FUN! ^^

Western people just don't fit to anime characters, because of there face structurs, their huge noses, thin hair and their eyes which aren't almond shaped.
Besides that most of them doesn't have the artistic skills for the cloth,make up and hair. Western cosplay is often messy and some of then don't even wear make up.
You know why theres no manga from western people? they just can't do it

@shadedfromdarkness Sorry to say this, but all the good cosplayer that I've seen from pictures and videos have been mostly Japanese & Koreans, some few good Chinese cosplayer, and even fewer American & European cosplayers.

@shadedfromdarkness Had to reply to clear things up I am an english cosplayer, I don't have petite girlish features but neither do the majority of anime characters. From experience of cons in the uk theres are good cosplays, I've seen a few good american, european, and asian cosplays. There are bad asian cosplays too. I'm a pugilist, I run, swim and play football, so I'm not unfit. I practice make up, make props, and sew. I have fun cosplaying. It's unfair to generalise that's all I'm saying.

if i said outloud something like "i read manga and watch anime" then i would be pummeled half to death but im from the northwest where around 60%+ of society are sluts, chavs, whores and alltogether the kind of people who would take getting wasted on a park bench over going to school

@BladedShotgun You should google it I've been to at least 10 different events held around the uk cosplaywise. People can be arses no matter where you're from chav's are not a dying breed. Don't be forced by other peoples standards, cosplay as anyone as long as you have a costume have fun with it. It doesn't matter if you're a little shorter/taller/heavier/lighter whatever if you like the character do it, don't worry what people think and if worried you can always go with a friend.
