@ubershredder1989 (sigh) im assuming you are basing this solely on this video? If you had heard even a little of his songs you would know this is a rarity for him, he is more prone to write rock blues which are very tastefully written, try listening to some of his songs =]
zomg ther are no emotion in ther playin ther nowher near as emotional as clapton, bb king, noel gallager and cloin hay. all th3y d0 iz pl4y fast. th3r is n0 skill or emotion in playing fast, ther iz only emtions in really slow soloz that are based on tha bluez scalez.
It's hard to believe that even back then in his shredder days, even on a guitar with a floating Floyd-Rose type trem, the guy was actually using 0.11s(!?)
Absolutely amazing!!!! Definitely see Jason Becker type playing in parts....him and Richie were the 2 biggest talent at that point for this kind of playing IMO. Paul Gilbert had a scary good technique around this time too, but he was the master of alternate picking and string skipping.
Technically amazing but for me boring to listen to.. where the feel, dynamics, tone ? BB King say so much more with so much less, yet so many dont come close to being able to do what he does with 2 or 3 notes.. makes you wonder what then is more difficult to play
@ExtremeBogom thanks for pointing that out Chris.. I love guitars like you.. and fast playing as much as slow playing.. Kotzen is undoubtedly great..in fact he has matured into a great songwriter, vocalist and plays more feel style these days than when this video was made. My point is that great guitar playing takes great technique.. that to play SLOW and well is just if not more difficult to do than to shred.. but many seem to think to play slow is easy if you can already play fast.. no so.
Sometimes less is simply that...less. I look at technique like this as having a large vocabulary. If I were going to write a story, I'd rather be armed with a 10,000 word vocabulary than 1,000. I may not need the entire 10,000 words at any given point but they're there when I need it. BB King is a master but he writes only one kind of story...the blues. Many guitarists of this caliber can write any kind of story.
THis isn't music but it's great fretboard gymnastics which could be used to make music. Such a difference between this Kotzen and the muscular one playing with Mr. Big. This one is smooth and playing a lot of different licks where the other one seemed to rely on just a few patterns. Maybe he got old and lazy.
@TruthSurge or he came to the realization that music isnt about throwing a lot of notes around like most shredders do. Just look a nuno bettencourt now
@3510211 So, you think Flow is better music than say, Three Sides to Every Story? I would say Flow, having just listened to it, is overly simplistic and trite. But then, dumbing it down would ensure higher sales. But Nuno was kick ass in Extreme and played tasty licks and sometimes very fast. What separated him was his aggresive style and precision, IMO. I go for ballads all day long but Flow didn't do anything for me songwriting wise. I assume the name means it's him on everything.
It's funny if you watch this then watch some new videos from Kotzen, it's so amazing how much he's changed, but he keeps his skill. Now though, he just knows exactly when to use it, and he's even more versatile now, love Kotzen :D
yeah hendrix definitely didnt know more than many professors... if any... he knew some but not that much lol but he was creative enough that it didnt matter much
@AngeloGrazianoo he didnt show it... have you played with him or something? not saying he wasnt good, but he wasnt a musical genius. more of a pioneer.
@iPR0SH0T no but from reading multiple books and interviews about him, he knows what the hell he's doing. His music was very simple, and in that respect, I could see why one would assume that he knew little, but in fact, he knew exactly what and why he was playing a specific chord and he knew when to play the right notes on the right chord. Now I wouldn't call him a musical genius, but just as you said, he was more of a rock pioneer :]
@AtanasovPeter Holdsworth knows music theory, but not the traditional names for scales and intervals used in modern music. If you watch his REH video, he has his own names and notation for scales and modes that only have meaning to him and him alone. He definitely knows what he's talking about obviously, but his notation looks like some alien language. LOL.
@AtanasovPeter hhm well i learned something interesting from Stephen Lynch i think it was... he said that he learned from his guitar teacher that Jimi Hendrix knew music theory, and Allan Holdsworth did not... i thought that was pretty interesting
paul gilbert is amazing, but one of the most underrated guitarist form those days is tony mcalpine, he aways did more then just shred, he was emotive through his music!
@therealgtarbeast666 max and edge are 2 of the best instrumental cds of all time .and i still listen to them .unfortunately tony diffident follow them up well .but for a time he was one of the best .
@therealgtarbeast666 Tony MacAlpine is a giant for sure. Never got the credit he deserved really. He was and is one of the greats. Maximum Security and Edge of Insanity, I would rank as 2 of the greatest instrumental albums of all time.

I think they are completely different players with excellent technique. At the time I think Jason had a better sense of feel in his shred, while ritchie was just plain relentless crazy fast shred. Nowadays, ritchie is incredible and well rounded, but who knows how good jason could've been.
Greg Howe is my favorite guitarist along with Paul Gilbert. What makes Greg different from all the shrapnel recruits is his improv and phrasing skills. they are light-years ahead anyone. I talk with a lot of guitarists and it seems that Greg Howe is the most difficult guitarist to transcribe. He is the master of pitch axis theory. much better than Satch at that.
You're right man, those sweep pickings at the end are totally amazing! I still remember the first time I saw this video back in the early 90's... good times! Peace!
Yeah man, i've been playing a year and i can almost do that, i just can't sweep. I know a lot of the scales, and i'm gonna get the lego pieces to them.
i saw richie playing 3 weeks ago, and it was wonderful, i'm glad he's not shreddy anymore, because his blues rock is fucking awesome, would be sad to miss it.
