Technically Metroid has always put exploration and atmosphere above Action until the last couple games, but even so where is it written as law that Action games have to be realistic? Whilst I agree that I think Metroid does better with a more 'realistic' presentation, by no means is the Action genre restricted to it, nor should it be.

And am I the only one who isn't struck by these as 'cartoony' so much as 'colourful'.

He's a new character, a Galactic Federation Soldier who's under the command of Adam Malkovich like Samus. Presumably they'll of worked together on previous assignments and the like.

From what I can tell this appears to almost be cross the whole Metroid timeline.

It takes place inbetween Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion, so it's essentially Metroid 3.5 story-wise.

The 'younger Samus' bits are flashbacks presumably.

Read the interview on 1UP. Whether they stay true to what they say or not has yet to be seen, but from what they've said it will be structured more like Fusion, whilst it'll be linear to an extent and have story progression, it will have traditional Metroid exploration, and the Third Person view accomadates more so for 'traditional' Metroid than the First Person of the Prime series does.

I'm not stating it will be outstanding or anything, but it's worth giving a chance.
