Most people say that the effects were okay, but not for me. I understand they wanted to make them look realistic, but, in my opinion, the effects were too realistic and it became ugly. Also, if M. Night was a REAL fan of the show, he would have made it good. The fact that the movie sucks proves that he wasn't a fan. Only movie makers who are true fans of the TV show or other film(s) can make great remakes or movie adaptation of a TV show. Look at Peter Jackson's remake of King Kong.
Unbreakable had a strong enough atmosphere to actually create a mythos had M.Night just gone for it and made a super hero movie and bumped the twist ending. THAT was the time for him to go for comic book/cartoon action. All Glass needed was a way to even the playing field or do something more terrible than kill off camera, lol.
The one thing that makes a movie truley god-awful is that it's boring. A movie is supposed to entertain you, and with a boring movie it's a great contrast with a film's main intention.
during the entire movie i was thinking: 'ok, not really what i hoped or expected, but no worries, the scene where Aang meets up with the ocean spirit and forms koizilla is coming up, and that is gotta be awesome'. But then... they just left that out completely! That was one of the most disappointing moments in my life...

@Raezeman I don't know. So much was botched in this movie with the basics of the characters, the plot and a lot of the detail that to correct it so that the rest of the story actually makes sense and is still remotely like the TV series is pretty impossible.
What I would hope is that they can scrap this POS entirely and just start from the beginning with a new "movie #1".

You guys make the point of the acting being terrible. And it is. It's absolutely awful. What's really sad about that is that the acting in the series was one of my favorite things. There were so many famous voice actors in that show--Grey DeLisle, Mae Whitman, Jennifer Hale, Raphael Sbarge--all incredibly capable voice actors with long resumes. Every moment in that cartoon was completely believable. To see the acting in the live-action film be such crap was absolutely disappointing.
Influenced by Mr Plinkett's review for the star wars prequels I have an interest in doing an insightful review of The Last Airbender. I will think deeply about the film and beat the crap out of it for as long as possible. Im viewing this review for inspiration because it's so insightful. To any who haven't seen the movie yet I highly reccomend just watching the show. It's on Netflix and if you don't have it you can get a 2 week free trial if you don't want to keep it. That should be enough to watch the entire cartoon (it's only like 50+ episodes) and it'd be worth the time. But if you absolutely insist on seeing the movie then make sure you haven't watched the cartoon. As a matter of fact just don't. Even if you haven't seen the cartoon.
At 6:20 he makes a good point. That's the difference between M.Night and JJ Abrams. Abrams said he serves the story and doesn't limit himself to a particular filming style. So if a movie calls for action he's not going to infuse it with a long boring shot etc. M.Night on the other hand said he has his filming style he used in EVERY one of his films. Obviously that worked in the Sixth Sense but it's unwise to have that approach to everything you do.

In all fairness the animated series was wonderful it appealed to children and adults alike it plot, and character development were some of the best I've seen in both animation and live action shows. As I've said before I like a majority of M. Night Shyamalan's films, although I hated The Happening and the one good thing I can about The Last Airbender is that atleast its not as bad that film, but thats not saying much. Apart from the acting I think the biggest problem with the film is that it feels like it on fast forward, they're always rushing somewhere to do something. I've been told thats because it's trying to cram a season's worth of story into one film, 2 stars out of 5.
I loved the animated series. Appa' Lost Days made me weep like a baby... or my mom. I had an entire year of high school where avatar was THE show I watched and an entire friendship based on it. I had such high hopes for the film, but just watching the trailer, I was hesitant. That doesn't usually happen. Usually, the trailer makes you say, "I have to see that!" but I held out for the actual movie. Crap. Absolute crap.
I'm very tempted to write a new screenplay just to prove that even an amature like myself could write a better movie than this. I don't mind the art direction. The effects were solid. I don't even mind some of the creative story choices like making firebending based on a source, rather than from within their bodies like in the show. Its just when you worry about abridging a series rather than tell a friggin' story, M. Night lost all hope of making a good movie.

I like the show... still, and when I heard a movie was in the works I was interested but cautious. As a show with many episodes you can get away with mass amounts of rules and cultural what-not that really made Avatar what it was for a lot of us. Then SHAMalan was made director and that lowered the bar even further. Then I saw the film. I gave him the best benefit of the doubt and he did not even come close.

2 things that M. Night did not comprehend when he got into making The Last Airbend:
1. the Fire nation = Chines, the Air nomads = Tibetans, the Water tribes = Eskimos and the Earth kingdoms = Koreans. THERE WERE NO INDIANS!
2. You can't compress a entire season in 1 movie. At least you can't compress a entire season that has a bunch important actions, relevant to the plot, in 1 movie.

I think the Northern Water tribe and the beginning scenes were probably the only semi-good parts when it came to the storyline. The movie was terrible. I watched it at the cinema and I literally felt like yelling at the screen. The voice acting was unbearable and had me cringing at the screen for 75% of the movie. The casting, make-up design and outfit design was horrible. Zuko is meant to be a pale white guy with that ponytail but in the movie he is represented as a black guy with spiky hair. (This is the guy that got me the most) The uncle also looks completely different to the cartoon. Theres alot of bad acting too.

There were so many famous voice actors in that show--Grey DeLisle, Mae Whitman, Jennifer Hale, Raphael Sbarge--all incredibly capable voice actors with long resumes. Every moment in that cartoon was completely believable. To see the acting in the live-action film be such crap was absolutely disappointing.

To any who haven't seen the movie yet I highly reccomend just watching the show. It's on Netflix and if you don't have it you can get a 2 week free trial if you don't want to keep it. That should be enough to watch the entire cartoon (it's only like 50+ episodes) and it'd be worth the time. But if you absolutely insist on seeing the movie then make sure you haven't watched the cartoon. As a matter of fact just don't. Even if you haven't seen the cartoon.

At 6:20 he makes a good point. That's the difference between M.Night and JJ Abrams. Abrams said he serves the story and doesn't limit himself to a particular filming style. So if a movie calls for action he's not going to infuse it with a long boring shot etc. M.Night on the other hand said he has his filming style he used in EVERY one of his films. Obviously that worked in the Sixth Sense but it's unwise to have that approach to everything you do.

In all fairness the animated series was wonderful it appealed to children and adults alike it plot, and character development were some of the best I've seen in both animation and live action shows. The movie SUCKED, it wasn't true to the characters or story and I truly feel sorry for the people who watched the movie and not the animation because your probability wonder why the cartoon was so popular when the movie suck. Just compare what Dragon Ball to Dragon Ball Z and you'll see what he did

As I've said before I like a majority of M. Night Shyamalan's films, although I hated The Happening and the one good thing I can about The Last Airbender is that atleast its not as bad that film, but thats not saying much. Apart from the acting I think the biggest problem with the film is that it feels like it on fast forward, they're always rushing somewhere to do something. I've been told thats because it's trying to cram a season's worth of story into one film, 2 stars out of 5.

I loved the animated series. Appa' Lost Days made me weep like a baby... or my mom. I had an entire year of high school where avatar was THE show I watched and an entire friendship based on it. I had such high hopes for the film, but just watching the trailer, I was hesitant. That doesn't usually happen. Usually, the trailer makes you say, "I have to see that!" but I held out for the actual movie. Crap. Absolute crap.

I'm very tempted to write a new screenplay just to prove that even an amature like myself could write a better movie than this. I don't mind the art direction. The effects were solid. I don't even mind some of the creative story choices like making firebending based on a source, rather than from within their bodies like in the show. Its just when you worry about abridging a series rather than tell a friggin' story, M. Night lost all hope of making a good movie.

I like the show... still, and when I heard a movie was in the works I was interested but cautious. As a show with many episodes you can get away with mass amounts of rules and cultural what-not that really made Avatar what it was for a lot of us. Then SHAMalan was made director and that lowered the bar even further. Then I saw the film. I gave him the best benefit of the doubt and he did not even come close.

2 things that M. Night did not comprehend when he got into making The Last Airbend:
1. the Fire nation = Chines, the Air nomads = Tibetans, the Water tribes = Eskimos and the Earth kingdoms = Koreans. THERE WERE NO INDIANS!
2. You can't compress a entire season in 1 movie. At least you can't compress a entire season that has a bunch important actions, relevant to the plot, in 1 movie.

@amazenfireangel That is so true. My family went and saw it with me, and while I was annoyed at some parts and thought it was an okay movie, they thought it was pretty good. I think the Northern Water tribe and the beginning scenes were probably the only semi-good parts when it came to the storyline. Oh, and the names, and the fact that the firenations got their fire from right next to them? It would be cooler like the cartoon if it just popped out of their hands/feet

The movie was terrible. I watched it at the cinema and I literally felt like yelling at the screen. The voice acting was unbearable and had me cringing at the screen for 75% of the movie. The casting, make-up design and outfit design was horrible. Zuko is meant to be a pale white guy with that ponytail but in the movie he is represented as a black guy with spiky hair. (This is the guy that got me the most) The uncle also looks completely different to the cartoon. Theres alot of bad acting too.
