Oil and Bridges Part 1-Toledo District, Belize 2008

Having spent the better part of the summer of 2008 in Big Falls, Belize, I can confirm that heavy rains were indeed the cause of the bridge failures. Furthermore this is a relatively regular occurrence in the area due to lack of investment in road maintenance.  While oil exploration has caused environmental degradation in some parts of Belize, the area upstream of the Kendal Bridge is uninhabited and untouched by oil exploration which, in Toledo, is concentrated further to the south.
