if i could give this complete pile of trash three thumbs down---i would. unfortunately, i have only 2 thumbs. this is the worst video i have ever seen. who made this, a blind retard with a cruel sense of humor? and another thing, whoever was narrating this thing is the single most annoying human being on the planet. LOSERS. too bad she didn't get eaten by a bear or lion
"Nature is the only place we can go to prove we have no limits. Without the wilderness, how can we push ourselves to the tops of mountains?" - What a beautiful quote!
yeah --beware --they are all kinds of weirdos you run in to--and just think you are staying in a shelter with them--pack a piece no matter what any one tell you.
About 3:20, picture of girls in water. Right side, green top. I think I know her. Trina, works at the Brentwood REI, she thru hiked in 2007. That might just be her.
AT: Ramen noodles and high mileage...until you get to the next town. Eat it dry if you don't want to carry fuel/cooker. Then once in town, consume nutrients in preparation for the next section. Repeat. Over and over and over again. Until you reach Maine. Yay!
For me - the worst part of the AT are the people. They all think they have a right to be in your face and your buisness. Never occured to people I was there to be ALONE. You will not get privacy on the AT.
This is very true. I hiked South from Maine and the first night I spent alone in a shelter was not till middle Virginia, some 3-4 months into the trip. It's a lot worse for northbounders. They told me for the first 3-400 miles there was always someone within sound-distance ahead or behind them. That may be exaggerated. Enjoy!
Ton of people. Unhappy people. Expecting to enjoy the wonderful outdoors and have a spiritual experience when a thru-hike is simply hard work. I think that's why alot of people get discouraged and quit. Much gossiping and slander in the first 500 miles from Georgia. Learned that on a section hike, so thru-hiked beginning in winter and had the trail/shelters to myself majority of time. Cold and snow in winter or competitive people, lightning storms, and a green tunnel...pros and cons.
For example, on one of the section hikes met a group of hikers. About 5 or 6 guys and one girl. They would hike seperately, and leave nasty notes about the girl in the shelter journals. So and so "is a crack whore". Things like that. Comments meant to hurt her when she would show up and read the journal. Reminded me of a girl in junior high school; insulted, abused, ostracized. Interesting note about that group...one guy said he hiked in Spain and didn't shower for 89 days--a personal record!
That's a pretty disgusting example, but I don't doubt it at all. The N-bounders I met when I was just starting in Maine had it MUCH more together b/c the trail had sifted out the less disciplined ones. I saw when I got to the south, the poor shelters scrawled over with grafitti (no respect), or all of the hostels that were either literally hostile to us S-bounders or closed b/c of all the adolescent partying and disrespect shown by the young N-bounders when they passed through.
This is a great point of discussion. I think there is a overwhelming amount of adolescent hikers that are out there for the party, and not for the life lessons, and memories. If you get a late start you are forced to hike with others that have no discipline, and lack of respect for others trying to HYOH.
Great strategy to hike in winter for the solitude. The unhappy and competitive people on the AT were harder than the hike. "I" am my 3lb tent. "I" am my homemade stove. "I" am my trailname. Ego. I was 30+ when I hiked it. It may be easier to be in that scene if one is in the early 20's. You can see that attitude though all over the youtube AT videos. Going South was my attempt to avoid this, but other posters are right, there are much less crowded places if one wants solitude.
Agreed. I think the AT is a good starter trail for people to learn a lot without putting themselves at great risk, though. After one masters the physical hike, the questions of intrinsic reward like alone time become more important. I think that's why one sees those who've hiked it having the discussion about solitude. I've had great hikes since then with solitude in the NW and Alaska, but I wasn't ready to start off in those places.
Careful...Ouachita trail has ticks. I caught Lyme disease in Santa Rosa, CA. It becomes like MS, relapsing-remitting symptoms. I'm no longer a long distance hiker because of it. And I'm only ("only" lol) 44 y.o.
I got lyme disease on the AT in Vermont. Hiked about 400 miles as the symptoms waxed and waned before i realized it wasn't just beaver fever. I caught it with antibiotics before permanent damage, though. But I was still reeling from it in VA. A lot of people caught it the year I hiked. Sorry about your illness! People should be extra careful in VA-NH, I think. Lots of deer and tiny ticks.
Really enjoyed this, nice voiceovers, interesting take on the thing and it's nice to see two cute girls on the AT rather than another man mountain with a beard to the waist...no offence :)
you've mistaken one thing, you wern't in the wilderness, you were just in the woods, like a big forest preserve. So many folk think the appalachian trail is wilderness, not even close, but a good place to start a campfire, drink some whiskey and kill some snakes.
Actually yes, there are about 3 or 4 shelters on the trail that are close enough to roads that you can order pizza... I just finished a SOBO thru-hike and pizza at the end of a 20 mile day is the best thing in the world
Awesome video. I finished a SoBo thru hike on January 12. Definitely the most amazing experience of my life. I think it's completely ruined me in a wonderful way. I'm currently working 7 days a week saving up to hike the PCT next year. Again, great video, thank you.
Chase your dreams. Think unrealistically. Life is amazing.
Great video girls!!! Did you read "A Walk in the Woods"?? because I saw your Bill Bryson quote at the end! I love that book and have always wanted to hike the AT...I practically live on it!
This was a fun video. How many days were you guys out? Check out "On the Trail... with Aaron Noll" on my page to see a video of a trip my friend and I did in Vermont. I love the AT!
You find your self, challenge your mind and body, and grow up to realize your spirit.

Well, you chose the most used trail throughout the entire Eastern Seaboard. You should try less traveled trails to be alone.

Check out the Ouachita trail in Arkansas it's 224 miles and is rated as the #1 trail for solitude.
