Canadian culture and identity are metonymically being extradited and put on trial here. If one was convicted of mailing airplane bottles of alcohol into Iran (where consumption of alcohol is illegal), would we extradite that person to face what we as Canadians accept as a part of our culture? No.
Most Canadians (and I would think many forward-thinking Americans) fundamentally disagree with the current demonization of marijuana in the US. In the end, the US government is only making Emery into a martyr. Now some joker is petitioning to "legalize marijuana" (it already is) so the government can sell it packaged and taxed (it does not need taxing as it does not have tobbaco type "problems".)

as much as i am for Marc staying on Canadian soil and not being extradited, he brings up a lot of good points. however he's tangenting just a bit too much for my comfort. it kinda felt like the reporter was trying to keep him on topic more than he was :lol:

Whether you condone Mr. Emerys activities or not, most Canadians would agree that a life sentence for selling marijuana seeds in any quantity is a ridiculously harsh punishment. Canadian culture and identity are metonymically being extradited and put on trial here. If one was convicted of mailing airplane bottles of alcohol into Iran (where consumption of alcohol is illegal), would we extradite that person to face what we as Canadians accept as a part of our culture? No.

Most Canadians (and I would think many forward-thinking Americans) fundamentally disagree with the current demonization of marijuana in the US. In the end, the US government is only making Emery into a martyr. I just wish more Canadians (especially those affiliated with the conservative party, for whom I did vote last election) would grow a spine: just because the US is situated underneath Canada geographically doesnt mean that we should let it have its hand up our figurative behind.
