i think they should produce a DVD boxset of all the cartoons released, starting with Plane Crazy and ending with this one, all in order, they could have all the black n whites on one disc and all the color ones on another. thumbs up if u agree/
I remember this was edited in a movie, which after they run from the gulls, we see Mickey and Pluto driving back to the city at night. Does anyone know which one I mean?
BTW this was Walt Disney's last Mickey Mouse cartoon, and another Mickey Mouse cartoon wouldn't come out again until 1983 ("Mickey's Christmas Carol").
@dommy1224 Not really, Walt had stopped voicing Mickey in 1947, when Jimmy MacDonald took over for the "Mickey and the Beanstalk" segment in Fun and Fancy Free. Walt would only voice Mickey once more, for the Mickey Mouse Club openings in 1955.
@DisneyFTW1 Actually the ones who hate are the ones who like Steamboat Willie , Plane Crazy , The Gallopin' Gaucho and the Barna Dance and the Black and White Mickey Mouse
A lot of people complain about this cartoon... I like it, myself. I don't think it's as nicely animated as the shorts from the 30s and 40s (Mickey's design in particular) but I like the seagull voices, and the scene where Mickey feeds Pluto while he has the oyster in his mouth. The title song can sound a bit smug, but the ending (the seagull singing it as Mickey and Pluto are chased into the distance) makes up for that.
I'm surprised you guys like this short so much, haha. I actually find it pretty underwhelming, and I think it borders on the unimaginative (in that it cooks up situations that you'd have seen a thousand times before in a Disney short). Also, it's not funny. In this cartoon, Charles Nichols' comic timing and pacing is flaccid, as opposed to the sharp, fast-paced cartoons WB and MGM were churning out at this time.
Well, it's true that Charles Nichols was no Bob Clampett---or even Jack Hannah---but I've always enjoyed his films for what they are. They're funny in pleasant, leisurely way. I agree about this particular film being rather dull though, though honestly part of it is that boring Mickey design they were using in the early 50s. It's amazing to me that it took until the early '90s for Disney to finally say "Hey, you know what? Maybe he DID look better without those eyebrows."
Wow... who else but Walt Disney could give sea stars and mussels their own strong wills and let seagulls talk in their own unmistakable high-pitched voice?
Ironic that you say that, since this Mickey design is very 50s. (Incidentally, I hate this design---it's the dullest version of the character that was ever animated).
If you're comparing it to the black-eyed version, that didn't last past 1939.
"It's the simple things That gives my heart its wings Like fishin' on a sunny day In the open air Without a single care You'll hear me singin' on my way It's the corny jokes I like to share with folks 'Cause laughin' keeps me feelin' fine It's the soft refrain Of every gentle rain That gives me so much piece of mind"
"I must confess, I couldn't care less What... other people do Just so I've got my favorite spot Right along side of you It's the simple things That give my heart its wings Like dreamin' by a campfire light And I'll go along With every cricket song That tells me that the world's all right... That tells me that the world's all right."
oh my god i have been hanging to see these videos again since i was a kid! from the age from about 4-10 we hired them from our 'video' shop hahaha... even steamboat willy. im 25 now and have a newborn im going to make sure he gets to watch and appreciate these great cartoons!
i remeber watching this as a kid, laghed hysterically, im 22 now, still laughing hysterically, i NEVER knew this was the last mickey mouse short, they did a brilliant job
Mickey had been so watered down by this point. On one of those old VHS releases, they put this one right after "Symphony Hour", made a decade earlier. The difference in Mickey is huge--not just the way he looks but his whole personality.
I'm glad these days at least they've brought back the red shorts and made him eyebrow-less again. He looks much more interesting that way.
i only listen 2 this because of the song XD
