I think Eric S needs to go over this part about the industrial revolution. Workers lost there jobs to the mechanical looms but there children didn't earn more money. Children during 1800 - 1900 before child labor laws enacted and taken seriously made less money than there adult counterparts. Children were paid less money than adults. Children were also expected to work 12 hours per day. There wasn't any employment mobility children worked in the same field as there parents. wikipedia

I don't know if we can conceive of the high tech future that Schmidt is talking about. Nanotech factories will be able to sit on a kitchen counter and produce anything. The cost in work hours for a smartphone/tv/sterio is much lower than the cost for a landline 40 years ago, but the cost for house is much higher. Why has the value of that house grown so much? 1966 avg house 14k, avg income 7k. 2009 avg house 215k, avg income 50k. This is after a precipitous drop in housing.
