  • This song is amazing!

  • Best song and it doesn't even have lyrics

  • Comment removed

  • Very interesting tune, seems to have a classical flavor to it

  • This song makes me think of a cathedral.

  • @CrashLanden No shit Sherlock.

  • if you love rock go to this > /watch?v=OsjeqWAJO4U&feature=fvsr trance

  • this makes me feel like im flying in the sky

  • Eddie Van Halen, the greatest of all time!

  • mmmh... delay at 39 ms :Q_____

  • So relaxing

  • calming song who agrees?

  • Oops, now I'm more of an idiot for reading what you wrote.

  • brings tears to my eyes...loss/regret/sorrow

  • This song makes me wanna run and jump across buildings.

  • In 1982 I was 13 , just got this album home and thought this was Ed's dad playing some type of wind instrument or possibly a synth

Funny thing is I still have resin stain from 1982 on my album when we scraped out a pipe skipping school.

  • When I first heard this tune I thought it was a synthesizer until I saw them when they made a stop on the "5150" tour in Detroit & Ed played his solo. a thought went through my head like "OH MY FUCKING GOD !!, HE'S DOIN' THAT ON A GUITAR ???!!!!. I THOUGHT THAT WAS A KEYBOARD (I was only familiar with the tune for a year) !! Astonishing to see it up close. It's an AMAZING piece of music, period.

  • whenever i hear this song i think of drifting through a forest of mushrooms

  • 0:18 reminds me of Moonchild by Iron Maiden

  • I remember the time I saw Eddie playing this solo here in México City, back in 1992

  • LOVE LOVE EVH!!!! ALWAYS HAVE ALWAYS WILL!!

  • One of the greatest band's ever. People that don't like VH, should try listening to disco, because back in the day that's all that you heard on the radio, tv. VH came out rockin' and disco was dead.

  • Eddie Van Halen was a genius, so ahead of his time. Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page and Randy Rhodes are legends, but Eddie Van Halen is god, Period.

  • @Souljah2610 For what it's worth to you I totally agree.

  • they should play this in the vatican :)

  • I Love how people of todays generation are not forgetting such good music of yesterday...............

  • @rd80schild Only some of them. Most of them are only listening to that pop crap.

I mean, EVERYTHING in today's music industry (I'm talking about pop here) sounds EXACTLY the same. NONE of those songs use any real instruments whatsoever; they've always gotta use their techno bullcrap.

Basically, everything BUT pop (and grindcore) is music.

  • High.. TOOL: BOSS Digital Delay DD3 (or similar). Technique: Effect Level 100%, Repeat: 0 (1x for every note you make), Time: 300-390 milliseconds, 386 to be exact. depending on the next part/ your speed). Turn your amp, loud on clean channel. then in a "Dotted 8th" pattern, turn the volume on the guitar up from 0-5 or so and off again. It is similar to PG the echo song and buckethead Bug Sur Moon, but, you are not picking the notes. You hammer on and turn the volume up and down in dotted 8th's.

  • (Not that he only delayed once, but that the delay for Cathedral is Once Delay, or it sounds so. :D)

  • Wow, gotta love that Once Delayin', Finger Flamin', Tap-Master we all know. Eddie Van-Halen.

  • This is one of my Favorite Evh solo cuz it sounds soo damn kool!!!!

  • the four poeple who dislike this.. you like dick!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • OFF THE HOOK!!!!!

  • Genius!

  • Beautiful piece...

  • Wow...3 people are gay...

  • thx for the thumbs up people, but many of you responders clearly didnt understand my not so good english

  • MOZART would be Very proud of Eddie Van Halen

  • @Intesivecarebear - Agreed ...EVH is a musical genius...

  • 0:18 reminds me of moonchild by iron maiden

  • this makes me think of the forest temple on zelda

  • when eddie dies hes going to a *cathedral* on top of a *erupting* volcano catching *spanish flys* with chop sticks and have *1984 *little guitars* and sip some jack daniels with frankenstien in heaven!

    .

  • It sounds like organ ! His electric guitar is an organ !!!!

  • I guess these boys have been to Amiens.

  • Tom Morello is good, he's real good but Eddie is the master.

  • Believe it or not this was on the electric guitar. Wild.

  • This song is actually really easy to play! Its just the matter of having the right distortion :) Its the delay that's making the organ sound. Still kudos to Eddie for being the god of guitar :)

  • @lalapoopmandude

Actually, he's using his volume knob to make the organ sound.

    The entire song it legato

  • I wonder how many pots hes frozen doing this

  • Eddie will forever be the be all end all in guitar exploits.

  • if you listen real closely you can hear the volume knob sweep on and off

  • For me no other song (or album) defines 1982 better than this. Great memories!

  • The bad thing about being the only person to dislike a video is that everyone wants to come after YOU!

  • Pure genius.

  • I always thought this was a backwards recording.? Is that not true??

  • @d80waffles No, he uses the volume knob in a kick ass way so it sounds epic as fuck!, But the intro from blackened by metallica is backwards and it sounds even more epic.

  • I've got this insanely powerful TC electronic chorus pedal from the 80s, it sounds like an organ at high intensity

  • Eddie is doing some funky shit with the volume knob here ??

  • this song makes me think of water

  • @elviejo1997 hahahahaha wtf? hahahahahahahaha thats so random lol

  • @elviejo1997 That is the most musical comment ever posted on a youtube page.

  • @elviejo1997 This comment makes me have to go to the bathroom. :/

  • @elviejo1997 that's so true

  • @elviejo1997 well it is on a diver down album...

  • @elviejo1997 This is a song I wrote last Summer, called Water.

  • 1 person plays the organ in a christian church.

  • @jride042976 couldn't be the lady in my church, shes like 10000 years old and probably can't see the dislike button.

  • @jride042976 i bet it took you a LONG time coming up with that one, moron

  • @greenday376 I bet you're a "christian" too. Hypocritical, name-calling, sanctimonious douche-bag. You must be to even take the time to post a comment I made 5 months ago. Either that, or an angry drunk with low self-esteem. Either way, go back to your angry life and leave the good music to those who appreciate it. Bye now!

  • @jride042976 um,ok whatever you say,retard

  • @greenday376 Or you can keep dancing for me as I pull the strings....you should be used to it, puppet. Have a nice day!

  • @jride042976 yeah ok what ever you say fucktard

  • I played this when my dog died. I had him for sixteen years but his life was taken right in front of me in minutes. In some way it made me feel better about it.

  • how can someone not like this?! its pure genius!

  • "124 likes, 0 dislikes" - wicked.

  • @legomonnate "133 likes, 1 dislikes", not as wicked, but still...

  • Sooooo tripppyyyyy, broooooo...

  • befor burt-a-nelli

  • Eddie just blows my mind with the stuff he does. amazing stuff. I hope they are really coming out with an album this year that would be boss

  • not that volume swells aren't great, but it's not like eddie's the first guy to ever do this stuff.

  • Well, he kinda was. He did this like 30 years ago if you didn't realize.

  • it is called volume swells. been around since les paul. however. ritchie blackmore perfected that sound on a song called fools. type in deep purple. fireball album. and you will see and hear the greatest rock song ever.......called, . fools.

  • He owns it! Did someone actually say they hate EVH? You gotta be kidding..

  • ya, a guitar. It's volume swells with the volume control knob on the guitar and probably a delay pedal. In the early 70s the Lovin Spoonful had a hit called "Daydream" - the guitarist uses volume swells to make his guitar sound like a trumpet. As Beethoven once said "the guitar is a miniature orchestra!" Chopin, whose music is considered the distilled essence of the piano, said "there is no sound more beautiful than that of a guitar, unless, of course, it's two guitars".

  • Too bad uh.. Blues Saraceno can do this ten time faster. A lighter shade of Plaid

  • @DistortedV12 When is faster always better?

  • @Phoenix4312 when it demonstrates control over a difficult technique like this one and when it sounds good. Why you ask?

  • @DistortedV12 Sure. And if Blues Saraceno could have played it any faster, I'm sure weird Al Yankovic would have hired him. So what was your point, anyway?

  • FUCKING AMAZING!

  • pioneer

  • this would be an awesome zombie killing song!

  • That's a guitar??!!!!!

    Oh my O_O

  • Just one thing: :D

  • my absolute fav VH album... I used to play this at the beach all the time back in the day. Dude music today sucks (not all but most) this stuff is so great and brings back memories of incredible times with hot chicks, beers, and fun!!

  • no dislikes thats how awesome this song is

  • my favourite part is 0:18-0:50 i think it is beautiful.

  • whats that white stuff in my pants... oh yeah.

  • I TRULY remember finding out that a girl liked me (while working in King Kullen with my friend) and we went out listening to this album and got crazy 69 style in the Dead of winter in the mid section of the Blazer my friend picked us up in. Granted it was almost 20 yrs after this album came out but it took NOTHING away from its impact...NOTHING!!

VH rules and, as far as I'm concerned with this example, Always will!! LOL!! Diver Down will FOREVER be associated with that time

    \m/ \m/ \m/

  • fuck tom morello! THIS IS VAN HALEN! we know the truth and history says EDDIE VAN HALEN is KING.

  • @edwardprzydzial History is written by the victor, and Eddie wins every time :D

  • I would like to buy the original Poster of this short but sweet instrumental and everyone else who posted on here a Round of "Likes"

  • Diver Down is more of a David Lee Roth kinda album. The rest of the band didn't like the album, especially Eddie, he hated the album. To Eddie this album was when Van Halen started to suck, but 1984 became possibly their most popular album yet. I can't wait till their new album!

  • @Gamelord804 1984 is amazing but I would take Fair Warning or their debut album over it just my opinion.

  • Pure Genius!

  • no pickin w/the r/hand.turnin the volume knob.

  • The God of rock, no doubt! thumbs up if you agree!

  • it's really a guitar who plays on the song?!

  • @torsadoom yeah lol

  • I ♥ Cathedral! sounds of heaven!

  • This piece showcases Edward's creative genius beautifully. This sort of thing is what made him my hero when I was a teen.

What I want to know is: What the fuck happened?

  • @AnnihilatingAngel Alcohol and commercial studio management. They wanted more "runnin with the devil" and less "cathedral" and 5 minute "eruption" solo's.

  • who else besides me think this song is perfect to played on a merry-go-round

  • goddam i used to think eddie was like number four or five in my top guitar list until i actually tried one day to learn songs like panama, summe nights, 5150, best of both worlds, aint talkin bout love, etc....... but holy fuk they took me weeks to master perfectly after tht i completely changed my mind bout him after i heard and saw him play this ive

  • The Live versions are a lot better.

  • Eddie Van Halen, the supreme being, astonishing.

  • EDDIE!

  • after this song is Secrets! We need a beautiful mix of these two combined songs!!

  • another way to use volume swells is using a volume pedal like a wah pedal to increase and lower his volume

  • its called volume swells........he's constantly turning the volume contol knobs with his right hand, never touching the strings with his right hand, only his left.................he truly is AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @titmongler the only problem he had was that the volume knob would heat up and "freeze" on him

  • how does he make it sound like that???

  • @jak00012 The Devil.

  • @jak00012 he uses delay and is turning the volume of his guitar on and off really fast

  • and they say tom morello was the first guy to make an guitar kinda sound like an organ

  • Comment removed

  • @thorzo90 That's bullshit......Tom isn't even close to Eddie and Eddie is older that Tom

  • @thorzo90 Actually Genesis and Rush were using this way before Eddie ever did. I think eddie really showcased it better, but in a way, you could argue that takes less skill as well.

  • @thorzo90 wrong lol

  • @thorzo90 Actually it wasn't even Eddie that was the first to do this "bow" method. Jimmy Page was doing it many years ago, and even he probably wasn't the first, but he was most likely the first person anyone ever saw doing it.

  • @mindlessjrlee this does not involve a bow at all. its just turning the volume nob up and down really fast.

  • @TWiebenga

and lots of hammer ons and pull offs

  • @thorzo90 i hate that guy

  • @thorzo90 is Tom Morello from Rage Against The Machine? if he is WHAT THE FUCK!?!?! Eddie could kick his ass at guitar anyway without even using a guitar PERIOD.

  • @thorzo90 good comment

  • @thorzo90 tom morello didnt exsist in the 80's he started in 91, but i agree,

  • @thorzo90 Listen to Allan Holdsworth.

  • @thorzo90 who ever said that was a dumbass!!!!

  • @thorzo90 steve vai invented swells when he was jerking off to poop porn

  • @TheBestGuitarSoloEVR I LOVE Steve Via, But you know this piece is iconic..........

  • Amazing!
