Just checked the maori dictionary OOPS it really is E Ihowa (meaning Lord) So the anthems lyrics website got it wrong with Ihoa. Oh well, live and learn.

I would love it if Australia also had an Aboriginal verse in our Anthem but it is just so impractical. There is something like 150 individual active languages originally steming from 750 languages. There would never be a consenus

Sugar, have you ever read the 2nd verse of the Aust anthem. It reads in part "for those who come across the seas we have boundless plains to share". In fact we lock them up in detention centres. Then we treat the rightful owners of Australia as 3rd class people. I was born here yet I feel that there is much to be learned from NZ and the way they treat the original owners as equals or better. Their Anthem is beautiful. because it starts with the real owners of NZ in their own language.

Jep. Don't run down the Aussie anthem. It is a good one, one of the better ones., Pesonally, I think it is as least as good as the Kiwi one, and certainly better than Canada's. Personally for oomp, you can't beat the Polish (Yugoslav is the same) and French ones. Man, that Freanch anthem hits the spot, doesn't it! For patriotism and sincerity I love the Finnish anthem. Naturally, anything Russia produces is good - but they keep changing it.
