The hidden camera is as ecixiting as the paintings. Wonderful quote on the fly, James. If anyone's interested in hearing Currun talk about his own work, search for the YT video: Conversation: Painter John Currin on the PBS NEWSHOUR channel. He paints what brings him pleasure. I don't fault a man for that.
Thank you very much James, an excellent tour of the show, enjoy you spotting the folks in the crowd as well, it's like we are there with you. Don't understand some of the criticism here, it is obvious Currin is extremely talented and his paintings are (for me) a joy to look at. Most of his women are absolutely beautiful. Get off your high horses and enjoy the work.
As people have expressed, I too find them seemingly vague and trivial in content at first, but it kind of turns around in it's favor and definitely doesn't make them "meanigless pictures" in the way snapped photography is. They feel quite care-free with the deformed anatomy, especially the crudely "cropped" figures and awkward expressions on their faces. It almost makes a statement about pictures we see today and the pervy body-part fetishisms they represent
did not care for this at all. so extremely boring. photo realistic portraiture had it's place before cameras, surrealism had it's place before cgi, going back and painting all these images so painstakingly is retro-creative.
this work is born from a complete lack of innovation. definitely not a modern day renaissance going on here.
Not all artists are innovators. This is the number one rule of creativity, even if someone else has done something, that doesn't mean that it has been done by YOU (the artist) that means that if your interest lies there (as an artist) then you can only move forward and innovate after you have experienced what it is like to do certain things. Experiencing process is totally different than experiencing a "piece" of art. Art is still a process of learning.
technical skill-yes...soul, feeling emotion, politics-maybe not...soft-core erotic kitsch for millionaires...if you can paint this well why not paint something with content that takes a Real Risk...
If I may correct MrPixies's comment: great work from you, period. Gratuitous, boring and pointless kink which is not even provocative anymore. Great painting is not only a matter of great technique (which Currin certainly masters). Boucher, Tiepolo, Cranach, Parmigiano, Lempicka, late Renoir...But not late Chirico...The best things in this show are the frames...
HE COPIED MOST OF THE PAINTINGS FROM PLAYBOY MAGAZINE AND HE ADMITTED IT. THAT IS NOT A TRUE ARTIST, JUST A COPYCAT ARTIST.

But why it is not permitted to film or take pictures in some galleries?

@bueno3963 The owners make the decision as to what is or isn't recorded in their establishments. It's about control.
