  • PocketAngels Rescue here - Bella was a beautiful girl! Its always so hard to lose them :( Many condolences to you (((hugs)))

  • @PocketAngelsRatResq yes, I still get tears over my pets. Bella was helped over * had a peaceful passing, as sad as it was to lose her. Her life was good from start to finish - of course toward the end she was in decline from horrible weeping smelly tumour, but never lost interest in her life until the last week. Then I knew it was time to let her go. Her little sister Bilby lived on for several months more, but never seemed so happy as when she had her life long companion

  • Omg 1:53 Is soooooi adorable

  • @HorseDrawingLuver yes!! they are!!!

  • '

are all rats familys or not

  • @bestamerica

Hi, not sure what you mean. Do you mean are all MY rats family? mine here are two sets of sisters. Bilby & Bella are same litter sisters. Then four other sisters, Sofie, Siba, Sula & Seija - all from same parents, but three different litters - Sula & Seija are from same litter so twins

If you're asking about rats in general & their taxonomy: two thirds of all rodents belong to the family Muridae but are split into a number of sub families. Rats sub family Murinae. Hope that helps

  • sehryn,

    okay thank explain about rat,,,

i had a cute rat long time ago when i was teenage

  • @sehryn Do you have a preference for females? I could see starting with female rats and then deciding to introduce new ones without having to spay or neuter, but just curious.

  • @zenvidar Hi thanks for the comment. I need to update my details. I now have one female ratty left. Her name is Teka, the half sister of same litter siblings Tilly and Tansy who have both passed this past month. Teka is very old & fragile so not sure how much longer I will have her. I love females & males - they're quite different so depends what you prefer. I believe choosing 2-4 same sex litter mates is the best way to go. They're quite attached to each other from the start...

  • @zenvidar Females are typically smaller and very active, especially when younger. They are susceptible to many types of tumours and it can be hard to pin them down for cuddles because they are always on the go. But they are so sweet and smart and can be affectionate if handled gently every day of their lives and fed treats by hand. That also applies to boys. Boys are generally bigger and much slower, more likely to sit and enjoy a scritch around the ears etc. Lovely Big Squishes!!!

  • @zenvidar males do much better if their cage mates are their own same sex siblings. Both sexes urine mark quite a bit when young but girls get over it before boys, but eventually boys don't bother with it either. Boys have HUGE testicles, which I don't mind because their nature is SO SWEET!!! ime Girls smell like fresh baked cinnamon cookies and boys smell like fresh baked musk cookies. I love the smell of ratties, but their habitat needs regular help to keep fresh and sweet smelling

  • @sehryn :o i see. You have 9 girls now and 6 boys. O_O

  • @zenvidar no more, all passed away in old age, some were well over 3yrs which is very old for ratties. I've loved and enjoyed my time with every one of them. This year I'm really busy with a course of study so next round of ratty pets I will choose only same sex from the same litter and see how that compares in time and energy demands. Rats definitely need at least one ratty friend. They are extremely social & research has shown they do better with cage mates. Good Wishes!

  • @zenvidar oh sorry, I do still have one, Teka - she's very cute and totally adorable

  • @sehryn Thank you very much for the response. :) I wasn't too informed in the past and even tried cross-species caging. It worked in my case without any real stressors, but I was lucky. I wouldn't try it again. I had bad luck with mice in general, except for one. Learning later that rats often prey on mice due to competition of food source and shelter, I shouldn't have placed my male mouse hermes with my male rat Atty, but like I said, was lucky. I didn't have a sibling for either

  • @zenvidar mice are more aggro than rats. Male mice will fight each other, even to death so if keeping more than one with females it is always better to have litter mates, but even then there is no guarantee they wont fight each other. Rats are proven to be more accepting of other male rats, but it is difficult to introduce older strangers, however it can be done. In my opinion Litter Mates make the BEST CAGE MATES!!! They have been together since conception & are very bonded for life

  • @bestamerica the two most common rats -brown Norvegicus (from which we domesticated 'pet rats') & black Rattus -both belong to the same FAMILY Muridae, SUB-FAMILY Murinae, GENUS Rattus, SUB-GENUS Rattus, but different SPECIES, ie Norvegicus & Rattus. There's debate 'domesticated' Norvegicus rats should be re-classified. At least one gene on the neural crest is found to have altered through domestication - it's likely more neural/brain differences will be found with further research

  • sehryn,

okay thank explain about the rats,,,

i saw another video that ferret and rat are good getting along pet friend each other

  • @bestamerica even though combinations of animals might 'get along' with each other, the BEST companion for a rat is one of their own kind, always

    cheers!

  • I love how each rat has its own personality. Sad that its so hard to catch on video. I had a rattie that wouldn't eat any treats that it didn't first smell on your breath.

  • @Pneuma001 Hi and thanks for the comment. Young ratties use the strategy of smelling older, more experienced, ratty's breath to tell them what is ok to eat. This might be a strategy rats developed because they cant vomit if they eat poison or something toxic. So they learn what is safe and good to eat by smelling the breath of healthy older rats.

So it is so cute your little ratty did that - obviously it trusted you and thought of you as 'family' lol

    <:3( )~~~~~

  • haha ONLY 6

  • i got 6 rats at home ^^

  • @dzihas be careful...dont catch ggmr!!!! (gotta get more rats). I caught the bug and ended up with 15 of the dear little creatures lol

  • @sehryn I think its too late ^^ i got 6 and i'll get the next one in October ^^

  • @dzihas oh dear LOL, yes sounds like you've got it <;3

  • I'm an Aussie rat-mum too :D

I have two precious boys, named for food. Augustus Gustav Apsaragus(Gus) and Hamish Hamelin Hamburger (Hammy).

...I don't know why I went with such long names- I guess I wanted names that absolutely suited them to the letter.

  • @Treemeadow

I love naming my sweet little petty pet pets. I also try to pick names that suit, but sibling names always start with the same Letter.

I just realised that apart from Sofie & Bella I dont alter their names at all when I talk to them. Sofie does get called Sofe & Bella gets called Bell or BellBell

Everyone else is called by the names first given: Sula, Seija, Siba, Bilby, Teka, Tilli, Tansi, Max, Muffin, Rorschach, Rokstah, Noir (& darling Nils playing at the rainbow bridge)

  • omg I wanna see a video of all the ratties you have now! :D

    plz make an update? ;)

  • @OtakuXxChan I am working on it, but spend more time playing with my ratties and petting them than actually filming them...they are so cute and adorable

  • @sehryn LOL I know what you mean ;) I always get caught up in playing w/ my rats and their cuteness ;D

  • @OtakuXxChan LOL <:3

  • cute little rattys everywhere

  • cute little rattys everywhere

  • @Iloverats73m

    yes...I think so too :)

  • Sofie is in ecstasy over the pumpkin seeds...see her eyes boggling...she is in heaven

  • This is a great video, your rats are very cute!

  • Thanks...I think they are very cute too

  • Hello, it's Cassie, you've recently given me some information on my 3 little boy ratties and socialising them and sent me this link :)

Your girls are lovely! I don't know how you cope with 15 of them, but good luck! I hope my little boys become as social as your girls!

  • Hi Cassie, Im sure with perseverance and patience and love your little ratties will be completely socialised and adorable little companions, sehryn

  • So cute. I have 3 rats and one of them is now 4 and a half

  • WoW...good going...I hope my girls to live at least that long. the only sad thing about ratties is their short little lives.

  • and that some people insist on feeding these tame sweet little animals live to captive reptiles and birds of prey

  • Wow, 4 and a half? I think my rat is on the way there too. His very last friend died about 8-9 months ago and he's now 3.5 years old. I have a feeling he's going to live to 4, which is pretty uncommon for a rat!
