Ugh, I know. It was a major OMG moment for every SN fan that was watching at the time because no one expected that to happen. It was like Kripke was trying to make sure he left his mark on the world of SN before Sera Gamble takes over in the sixth season.

He was probably sitting there coming up with ideas and said 'last episode, lets kill a bunch of people and bring them back just to get some people pissed and confused'

All in all, the episode was amazing and perfectly done

The sadest part though was when Dean was getting getting beat up my Sam then seeing his face when both his brothers fell down into the hole :( all his family left him and all he had left was the girl and her son so sad :(
