  • Good list......star craft and diablo and baldurs gate some of my faves also half life.....

  • what does it make a high end game computer when it comes to PC games

  • Why isn't there at least one of The Elder Scrolls games?

  • Theif looks like a really great game. Thank you for uploading this. I'm getting sick of playing CoD and all of them games and was looking for some classics. Thanks again :)

  • Great choices. Very nostalgic,

  • Tyrian's in the list, so i'm happy! Nice work!

  • lol 7:43 I been trying to find that game cos I remember playing it back in the days but I couldnt find it anywhere..Thanks

  • Just curious, have you played frontier elite 2? That game is beast.

  • Great games but what about civilization and alpha centauri?

  • Very good list... But no half-life! That makes me sad :(

  • also shame :( no redneck, sam and max hit the road, dukenukem I and II...Guess with 17 games it's difficult to get everybody happy, maybe try making a bigger list. Like that you used commander keen and unreal tournament,

  • diablo 2

  • you mispronounced the word "genre"

  • Comment removed

  • yes, sure it is YOUR list and I wouldn't tell you to add MY favourite games, BUT there's my question: didn't you like warcraft 2, tomb raider or counter strike? there must be a reason WHY you didn't put those on your list.

  • @wertzustellung Sure, the reason is exactly the same for any freaking game you can think of: I didn't subjectively like it "as much" as the games that ARE on the list. It has nothing to do with my not liking the games, not necessarily. It's just that some games I like MORE. That's the point of a favorites list, you know?

  • @wertzustellung I love all those games, but you have to remember that there were a lot of games in the 90's, and they can't ALL be the best.

  • duke nukem 3d ruled my childhood..... to many good memories haha

  • YES :) !!! From storage 10 years old computer with old windows, and I installed dosbox 0.74 and loaded lots of 90´s PC games !! Sun is starting to shine finally again :) Happy days again !!!!

  • Tons of games in the era! But not even a nod to X-Com :UFO Defense? It has won many awards, just not by you. Anyway, I suppose the "best" games are limited to your genre (jahn-ray as you put it). Red Baron II was a great flight sim! SSI made a TON of great wargames in this period (General this and that, I loved Fantasy General), as well as some good AD&D RPG's. None here! It's your genre (jahn-ruh) that seems to make your list. And that's fine, that's way we have our opinions. Nice videos!

  • Okay, this is driving me insane, I remember this old computer game that I played as a kid, where the main character's dad owns a book store, and somehow the kid gets into a hot air balloon and flies off to the old run down carnival and you do a bunch of stuff there to try to get parts for the air balloon to get back home. Anyone remember that?

  • nice info about nfs3 hp.it's a really good game, true. but didn't know there is a modding scene for it. thx!

  • Unreal Tournament is epic...

  • Ugh, I miss Simcity 3000 so much.

  • @gameaddict51 Sim City 4 is pretty much Sim City 3000 with better graphics and way more possibilities due to the connections between cities. :)

  • @harmian I know that. Yes, Simcity 4 is better. But they're both good and I wish I could play them.

  • No RPG love? Ultima VI, Darklands, Fallout, Planescape: Torment... There were INCREDIBLE role-playing games back then, unlike today.

  • cant really go wrong with any pinball games, specially if your oldschool. we used to hit arcade rooms just to play pinball, do they even have pinball machines in acrades today?? lol , i dont know cuz i have my own arcade room home with pc /ps3 / and xbox..you know:D

  • duke is #1

  • For me fallout and fallout 2 are top two.

  • Wow i always though worms was developed by team17... Microprose...

    I miss microprose

  • @rvistaworkbench No you're right, Team 17 developed Worms. Microprose only published it. And I miss Microprose as well.

  • You got shitty game taste, but whatever :)

  • Why don't you freakin' understand, that this is Phreak's list, not yours.. so stop telling what should be on it and what shouldn't or go make your own list.

  • @DirtyKameSennin Exactly. You'd think this would be simple and obvious, but apparently some people just don't care.

  • no warcraft 2! WTF!

  • Quake 2 had the best!!! best !! deathmatch multilayer in history of gaming. The edge

  • I remember fond memories of when I used to play POD. At first I was reluctant to play it when my dad gave it to me all these years ago, but then I came to my senses and tried it out. Oh my are you bringing back good memories for me.

  • no half-life??? denied!

  • Owww no X-Com UFO Defense? :'(

  • @AphexDash Agreed! I spent more time on X-Com than perhaps any other PC game, and in a good way! Read my previous post.

  • I have to say that a lot of the games you talk about would not just make my top 10 or in this case top 17 (18), but my list for all time. Specifically titles in the NFS catalogue, Sim City, AOE....

  • @chootastic Oooh and DN3d

  • no half life 1?

  • @ratchet256 Wow... i thought that game was a lot newer than that, but i looked it up! Damn those guys at Valve are wizzards!

  • Awesome lists!

So many gems in the 90's for pc

  • And System Shock 1 or 2 is not on this list! This can only mean you have never played this before... and if so, this must be corrected immediately!

  • @kagenooni It can also mean I simply liked the games I listed more, since this list is totally subjective after all. Just throwing that out there :)

  • @phreakindee Blasphemy! I must say its interesting to see something like Omikron make it on the list but not any of the SS series... Now its just nagging at me, why didn't it make the list? Super sharp learning curve and the fact that it is possible to put yourself in a position to not beat the game at all though wasteful decision making?

  • I remember watching a friend of mine play Age of Empires 2.....went out and bought it the next day.

  • I love Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, and my favorite game I've EVER played is Unreal Tournament 99 but I love not FPS games like Command & Conquer.

  • Command & Conquer for me, Duke is awesome!

  • Now I gotta go find a copy of Thief again. I had it back in the day, but never beat it.

  • I loved Worms Armageddon. So much fun. My friend and I used to play it back in the day on his dad's laptop. Good times.

  • I can't believe you included One Must Fall, Epic Pinball and Carmageddon 2. Man I spent some insane amount of time playing these back in the day while all the other peps were so fascinated with so-called "better" games like Super Street Fighter II Turbo, Pinball Fantasies & Need for Speed 4.

  • Quake 2 would have also been a great one for this list. It had a massive following, and still does.

  • @aaronfowlowmusic But that following doesn't include me, so community popularity is irrelevant. This is a very personal list... Seems a lot of people totally missed that, or don't care.

  • @phreakindee

Damn, someone on the Internet with actual taste in games! Unlike all those self-proclaimed "game critics"(barely) who refer to COD 4 as "revolutionary". If I made a list like this, it would've probably gone down the same way. Good show sir!

  • @phreakindee I did not miss that point at all. I am just saying, in my opinion, it would have been great for the list. Your list was very good. I have no criticism at all.

  • @phreakindee What's your opinion on the myst games and return to zork?

  • Great taste!

  • that's funny, I must have missed the part where you mention quake

  • Dare I say Need for Speed II looked better than current racing games :D

  • I liked most of those games, i used to play loads of point and click games, how come there are not any on your list, also i thought maybe kingpin might have been there

  • @ClarkeeKat You mean point-and-click games like the one at 2:23? ... yeah.

  • Aw dang; saw that Mechwarrior 3 box on the shelf and thought there was no way you wouldn't include MW2 on the list!

  • @mrhunam Came darned close. But as much as I enjoy the game, I didn't play it nearly as much as the games on this list. And I haven't really gone back to play it in years, whereas these games I return to much more often.

  • @phreakindee That's fair. As much as I push that game on my friends, if they didn't grow up with it they could care less.

  • How is Rollercoaster Tycoon not on here?

  • @PrrrromotionGiven I didn't put it in my list, that's how. Mystery solved!

  • @phreakindee Why, then?

  • @PrrrromotionGiven Same reason any other game isn't on here... because I didn't enjoy it as much as the other I did include, subjectively. There are only so many spaces on a list, so I only put my absolute biggest personal favorites.

  • @phreakindee Anything more... specific? What don't ya like about RCT?

  • @PrrrromotionGiven No, it's really just that! I love RCT, it's one of my favorite simulation games period (see my review for specifics). It's not that I don't like RCT, or any other random game. It's that I enjoyed the ones on this list MORE than those.

Compared to other games from the 90's, I've simply found more enjoyment from these listed, overall. It's comparing favorites to your BIGGER favorites... only so many can be called "the best of the best", it's how a list works.

  • @phreakindee cool, that's fine by me

  • Tyrian was trash my nigga. Cave had much better shumps during the 90's.

  • @rumbazz Yeah, well, that's just like, your opinion, man. It's considered by many as the best PC-exclusive shooter ever made, if not one of the very best period. Besides, Cave didn't make any PC shooters I'm aware of, so they don't even qualify for the list to begin with.

  • @phreakindee The reason why Tyrian was the best shump for the PC is because there was little to no competition.

Tyrian is a snoozefest anyways. I could play the game with one hand and use the other to make phone calls or purchase bus tickets.

  • @rumbazz

    >The reason why Tyrian was the best shump for the PC is because there

    >was little to no competition.

Doesn't change the fact that as far as PC shooters go it is widely considered fantastic. And this list doesn't take into account other systems, so whether or not it compares is irrelevant here.

    >Tyrian is a snoozefest anyways. I could play the game with one hand and

    >use the other to make phone calls or purchase bus tickets.

Ah. I bow to your irrefutable, 1337 gamer skillzzz

  • @phreakindee LOL WUTS A SHUMP? I know what a SHMUP (I like to call them Shooters or Shoot 'em ups) but wuts a SHUMP?

  • @phreakindee this is i very good list keep them coming i just downloaded worms armagedon because u recomended it is is freeware also

  • i grew up on One Must Fall, Commander Keen and Age of Empires. later a started playing UT. anyway, i loved this list

  • I Hate it when people post the games and then they don't watch the full video or just hit "show more" and see whats there..

  • please help me! you have a lot of game and i think you can know the game i'm searcing for. is an old game, i think 10 or 15 years ago. there was a robots, a ball instead of legs , and you had to do some race (similar to the skateboard, with raps and thing like this). the ball change his color with the damage....i don't remember anithing unfortunately :( i hope you can halp me, i'm going crazy!

  • Nostalgic staff, since 90´s was the big PC games decade for me (b.81). During the 90´s I was obsessed with many PC (and Sega Megadrive) games, but have been thinking I could still start to play some games from 90´s I used to play, the ones where you are playing against the clock and had working ensemble and "no limit" effect in it. It´s like athletics or downhill, it´s never gets old. For example, Slicks and Slide and Winter Games springs in to my mind.

  • You missed ZZT, which was Epic (Mega)Games first game, And I think you should play that. It is also the first Game Creation System, Then came Super ZZT and Megazeux,

Windows first had Klik/Games Factory/Multimedia Fusion, Game Maker, then a Port of Megazeux as Version 2.8+,

And now ZZT is currently being remade as Lyon (Visual Basic 2008) as well as DirectZZT (Visual C# 2010)

  • No Half-Life? Doom #11? No Descent? No quake? I agree with some of the games you mention though. A pinball game in top 10?

  • @robvelor You realize this is my own personal list? Is the fact that other people have differing opinions and preferences a tough concept to understand?

Sure, those you listed are fine games and regarded by many as being "the best". But nothing is universal, especially when you're talking about subjective preference. If they're not included here then logically you can assume they aren't my absolute favorites. Same goes for any other hypothetical game not on the list.

  • @phreakindee And you do realize my comment is also an opinion based on your opinions. And this is the internet and people have all kinds of opinions right? We can go on and on, bottom line is a pinball game in the top 10!! really!! Just kidding :).

  • @robvelor Your multiple question marks implied multiple questions regarding my list, so I gave multiple answers! Anyway...

What can I say, I love pinball games! I go back to Epic Pinball all the time, whereas games like Doom, Descent, & Quake I *might* play once a year. I've personally found "pick-up-and-play fun" vs. "games requiring time investment" goes a long way in gaming once as time marches onward. Hence why Bejeweled 2 placed in my 2000's list. People hate that choice too :D

  • @phreakindee Yeah, I just saw the bejeweled game on your 2000s video! Anyways, great vids really, sure got me entertained for this last hour.

  • Quake 3 !!!11oneone!!11 Then again, I still play Quake Live.

  • no heavy gear 2 or deus ex

  • @lupinmodz Not the biggest fan of Heavy Gear and Deus Ex isn't a 90's game.

  • I invested a lot into Duke3d also :D it was so immersive and detailed and ..just had a soul. I played with the build map editor a lot, it was the first 3d environment editor i ever learned to use (by myself ! - i was so absorbed by the idea of constructing an awesome 3d world)

  • The curse of Monkey Island??? Sam & Max hit the road??? STARCRAFT one of the most successful games of all times. It became sport!!!

  • @Vank4o Hooray for people that think those are the absolute best games they played in the 90's. I'm not one of them.

  • Master of Orion 2

  • her are som of the games i wud haf put on the list.

    Death Rally

    stunt driver 4d

    street rod

    quake

    ufo enemy unknown

    full throttel

    flashback

    Dune 2

    moonstone

  • My top 5:

    5. Sam & Max Hit The Road

    4. Grim Fandango

    3. Half-Life

    2. MDK

    1. Battlezone (Activision)

  • No Jazz Jack Rabbit?

  • lol u forgot MATHBLASTERRRRRRRRRRR FOR WINDOWS 3.0 AND HOTWHEELS!!!! THE FLOPPY DISK THAT CAME WITH THAT COOL YELLOW CAR. It was a short game but you travel through time... that dinosuar could never catch me Mwahahaha. Not bad for a floppy disk game and math blaster on pc pwnd any other version had more sounds and stuff. :D

  • Simcity 3000 or Civ II is probably my favorites from that era.

  • No diablo?

  • i loved pod, i got it with my acer

  • Where you would put the Decent series if at all?

  • Mech warrior 2?

  • So many memories! I had forgotten about Tyrian. I still play Thief (and Thief 2), Unreal Tournament.. I remember having to buy hardware to get the later Commander Keen games to work.. Doom 2.. damn now I wanna play. :)

  • Unreal Tournament was and still is awesome but I'm into my PC racing games and 2 for me really stood out.

One was Whiplash (or Fatal Racing) and the other was Geoff Crammonds masterpiece, GRAND PRIX 2! The one game that changed racing games forever

  • That's right! No one has the balls of steel! Serious Sam has the balls of diamonds! Cheers :)

  • well in the 90´s (late 90's ) the best games i play were Swat 3 from Sierra, and the GP500 and F1 Grand Prix 2 from Microprose. And i guess u are amercian cos u are missing Championship manager series from 90's :)

  • No love for X-COM?

  • @hargosh37 A good amount of love for X-COM, sure. But in my best of the best, personally? No. There are only so many spots in a list. Hundreds of favorites didn't make it, but that's just the nature of selection.

  • Mechwarrior 2 is tops for me

  • My top 3 of the 90s:

    #1 - System Shock 2

    #2 - Red Alert

    #3 - Unreal tournament

  • There was a PC game. I think that it came out in 1996 or 1997. Anyways, you coould explore planets in that game (Or at least one). My family didn't have a good computer at the time so I couildn't play it. And it wasn't "Out Of This World". Do you have any ideas as to what it might have been?

  • 9:19 Look there. Now look at the your door .

  • My favorite game of the 90's is Tomb Raider 3.

  • The game I didnt think id want but couldnt live without for me is skyrim

  • tyrian is awesome, underrated but oh so fun to play. Never gets boring

  • No Red Alert? now i am sad

  • I absolutely love these lists for any platform; MSX, Amiga, Playstation, PC and so on..

Some of my unforgettable PC titles in the nineties togheter with many in this video are: Commandos BEL, Tomb Raider 1, SWAT 3.

  • can u even buy ms dos pc now?

  • @chillhardy Sure! They're not the easiest to find anymore, but I still see them from time to time at local thrift shops and on Craigslist and such. You can also find them on eBay (often at high cost) or classic computer user forums (often at a more fair cost).

  • nice presentation !!!peace!

  • Carmageddon? holy shit. I used to play the shit out of that game.

  • hey phreakindee: what are the best RTS games from the 90s?

  • @Lvl22nerd Some of my personal favs: Age of Empires, Age of Kings, C&C: Red Alert, Warcraft II, Cannon Fodder (if you count that as RTS), Homeworld, and Total Annihilation. A lot of people are going to recommend Starcraft, but personally I never got that into it.

  • @TheManidunno @Igorsov Okay guys, seriously, chill. If the anyone wants to disagree with me, whether the reasons make sense or not, that's fine. That's a comments section, and it can be civil. No need to get stupid over it. I don't wanna block people here.

  • You must be sh...g me, no Dune, Z, C&C Red Alert, Warcraft 2, Starcraft, Heroes of Might and Magic 2 & 3, Quake 1 & 2, Hexen 2, Diablo, Larry 7, Hall Life & Counter Strike, Them Park. Thanks god at least you got Duke Nukem 3D, Need for Speed III and Worms on your list.

  • @Igorsov I'll be sure and check my personal preferences against yours before making lists in the future. My mistake, I wasn't aware your opinion was law!

Seriously though, I will never understand people being surprised that other people's lists are different to their own... it's common sense that individual choices differ wildly, and there are only so many spots available to fill a list :)

  • @phreakindee I did not want to offend you and I knew that you will say this before I even posted my message, but seriously gotta know at least a few legend games. Your problem is that you just have not played them in time, it has nothing to do with your preference. All the f-g world knows games likes Quake, Diablo or Starcraft. The last one is like some f-g sport in Korea, No offense man, good luck with your preference, also make sure next time you title it as My, I repeat My Top 17...

  • @Igorsov I've played each & every one of the games you listed. Yes, it has everything to do with my preferences! I don't care how much the "f-g" world says those games need to be on my list. I just don't care. It's my list. What makes it my list is the fact that it's not made up of other people's opinions.

And I did say it was MY Top 17 in the video multiple times, in the description, etc. I mean really, who else's would it be anyway? I can't help it if someone doesn't pay attention.

  • @Igorsov objective vs subjective.. Just when you think its an obvious concept, a wild ignoramus appears. ah the dumb internets

  • @phreakindee In matter of fact Diablo 1 has the highest rating of all times on PC by Gamespot.

  • @Igorsov And? Since when did Gamespot determine what games I like? Or anyone at all for that matter, other than Gamespot? If you can't make up your own mind about what is a good game or not, then I'm sorry. I make up my own mind based on my own experiences, not by any company that's paid to increase sales numbers.

  • @phreakindee Whatever you say son. Peace.

  • Vive Omikron Live to Omikron

  • Man pc games forever, now is all the x-box and ps shit. 24 year old gamer. Loves red alert

  • "I emulated Duke Nukem's voice" xD

  • This video was uploaded on my birthday!!!yaaay!!!!!!!!!

  • alone in the dark,comandoes 1,diablo,day of the tenticale,grim fandango,interstate 76,little big adventure 2 twinsens oddesey,tomb raider gl,quake gl,betryal at krondor,world of xeen,ultima underworld,secret of monkey island,fallout 1 n 2,aces of the pacific

  • What about Cavestory?

  • @AReyes583 Its not from the 90s.

  • @AReyes583 That's 2004/2005

  • 12:55 - you can FEEL the passion

  • 09:39 YAY I HAVE A GAME!!! AND I'M SUPER!!!

  • Omikron. It was my first game where I got to go in a dildo shop. I will never forget it

  • @TheEricleeparker It is indeed a life-altering gaming experience.

  • Hello, phreakindee. I was just wondering where would you place Earthworm Jim if you had to put a number on it? Thanks :)

  • @Couragethecowarddog Hmm, I don't know where I'd arbitrarily place it, to be honest. It's a lot of fun no doubt, but the tough part comes when you have to compare it all these other titles that you enjoy. Just guessing I'd say mid-40s?

  • @phreakindee Thanks for the answer! Could i ask one more? How about Heart of Darkness?

  • @Couragethecowarddog Sadly, that's one I've never played! Always wanted to, but never got around to grabbing a copy.

  • carmageddon 2 yeeaa :D

  • 12:34 LOL

  • The thumbnail pic was from the classic "Carmageddon"

  • HOW IS THERE NO HALF LIFE?!

  • @BlackMesa198 Because I'm not a big fan of it, why else? It's my list, not yours or anyone else's.

  • @phreakindee Yeah, but it won 3 times the prize "best game ever"

    or something like that

  • @AlexBestGTA And? Why should I care? If some people like it, good for them. That doesn't mean I'm required to.

  • @phreakindee ok then :)

  • @phreakindee Well said Sir. I actually agree with you there i also do not see the hype behind Half life. Its ok but i don't understand why its the best game ever there are more deserving games.

  • @phreakindee yea its your list and its a good one but half life would deffinetly be on mine though

  • @damienp1988 nobody cares. you want to share a list, make ur own vid

  • Comment removed

  • @TheManidunno I would not speak for other. When you upload a video on youtube you better damn be ready for some criticism.

  • @Igorsov saying an opinion is wrong because you say so, & the only way their opinion could possibly be what it is because they hadn't experienced what you had isn't criticism, .. its self-centered idiocy
