Give Linklater chance to adaptate futuristic Philip K. Dick novel, about human condition, expressed in decadent atmosphere, drug dealer characters, description of effects of most dangerous substances known to man. And all you''ll got it's 90's style "talkie picture" with Winona Ryder and Keanu Reaves lying on the couch and smoking pot.
Sounds like a tweakers house outside Liberty, Missouri. Everyone in there is approaching day 4 and the shadow people are coming by more frequently. They should get some twine and make a hasty alert system out of the spare VCR and Lawn Mower parts lying in the side yard.
Shame they left out the next scene in the novel where a random guy in the street tells them it's two times nine equals sixteen gears, not two plus nine.
@astrophonix It is six back gears times 3 front gears to get the 18 speed. I am guessing he saw two the second time because the substance D was messing with his vision.
@astrophonix It is six back gears times 3 front gears to get the 18 speed. I am guessing he saw two the second time because the substance D was messing with his vision.
Philip K. Dick hates those "idiot" private characters. He describes them in his books in many cases like in "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" etc. You cannot wake up some day and believe you got education just because you are 30 or 40 and you suffered some things in your life. You have to seek out and learn what is the meaning of all this. And thats what philip is doing in his books. But saddly lazy characters dont even bother to use 1% of their brains to think. Instead they take drugs.
@AkaMouTinn there has been a war on drugs its been failing since the 30s but it was started by a mr ronald ragen even obama addressed this problem, am not disagreaing with you on the herion and just fyi your ancient greek is a little rusty its more used as a term describing someone of self-centeredness it had more to do with the social standing point of a person or someone lacking a trade. anywho you can qoute a scifi writer all you want the real information you should be taking out of my commen
@AkaMouTinn is this prohibition didnt work with alchohol and it wont work with marijuana if it wont work with pot than it wont work with anything else. when you tell someone they cant have something they go out and get it all iam saying is that this is not the way to do this you have to practice those values mentioned before otherwise no one will listen to you. but go ahead keep beleaving their lies your just one of those idiot characters your false philosipher so hates.
@AkaMouTinn only after you have exhasted all your resourses trying to find the truth will you trully be your strong characters see i bet you beleve that marijuana smoke kills brain cells due to the study done on monkeies in the 30s. what you fail to realize though is the conductors of that study assumed. again i agree there are those drugs that do acuall damage to your body but by saying oh kids just say no is never going to work thats the way of your idiots you have to inform them which
@AkaMouTinn ones do and dont, this is true enlightenment Neutrality. u see you are so bias i bet you either had someone with drug problems in your life or simply just beleved all the hipe. again yes some drugs really are bad for you but you deal in absolute "your either with us or against us" thats no way to live a life just open your eyes a little bit and see that life is not the cut and dry there is no such thing as good and evil the purpose of life is just that to simply exist and enjoy
@AkaMouTinn existance who r you to tell someone they cant enjoy their existance the way they want to. me personly i love getting up in the morning loading a fat bowl of weed and watching the sun come up its so peacefull and tranquill a pure orgasim. i bet you hate that thought oooo iam a law breaker oh my god. thats so archaic. so go ahead keep beleving the lies keep quoteing and twisting those words in your head increasing your bias belefs it dosnt matter at all. other countries have already
@AkaMouTinn proven how tolerance, supervision and moderation can basicly over turn drug problems its just a matter of time before we all realize this is true for all drugs not just classess 2 and 3. hell states have even started to prove it to our government so i hope you r alive when anyone can go around smoking a joint whenever they want and you cant do shit about it.
there is no war on drugs......... there are lazy characters and strong characters. I give you another line from philip to enlighten your philosophical journeys "Boldness is no virtue If it causes the surprised organism to fall a thousand years, wondering as he plunges how he went wrong and where the error lay." Each time you inject heroin tou your body you surprice yourself with a fake emotion that was not generated by an outer reaction. Thus you become an idiot (greek word for private).
@AkaMouTinn i dissagree he wrote this to show you what alot of something can do to you, alot of anything is bad for you total fact even vitimans or acually medicine can do bad things to you with an inhibition of moderation. now iam not one for harder drugs ie meth herione, pcp, but even cocaine can be controlled using moderation. sure there are those drugs that still will do serious damage to your body but you cant try to prohibit something its just not going to happen tolerance and
@irishdan10990 The answer to your comments comes straight from Philip K. Dick "Drug misuse is not a desease, it is a decision, like the decision to step out in front of a moving car". "Reality is that which when you stop believing in it, it doesn't go away". You use drugs to correct natures faults. You dont use drugs to experiment with false "happiness". Read a few books and then you can have an opinion about what philip is writing about. And dont try to customize anything to your needs.
@AkaMouTinn ill give you ur quote but you are sadly mistaken in your opinion of my "needs" iam very informed iam not some bumbling idiot spewing summarized excepts from popular regertiation i was trying to make a valid point to you surpassing the views of one author i was looking at this in a more broad spectrum you sould take a look a a little video called The Union the business behind getting high it opens your eyes to both sides of the issue by revealing acual truths on this information war
@AkaMouTinn moderation, and good ole supervision is key the war on drugs will never win untill this is realized the government could easily control the manufactue, retail, useage, and treatment of every "iilegal" drug with this philosiphy but it wont because its stubborn just the same way there will never be leagal prostitution which acually would cut down on the std rate in this country. one day though very soon marijuania will show the government how this can be achived.
2:04 before I knew about neuroscience and biofeedback technology.....I thought there was a camera in a fish on my wall. Just wanted to pop it's camera eye out! It is very scary when it happens to you. They reveal where you are and such, even encourage strange conclusions that you might come to. You appear as if insane, but this is just one of the many programs they put on people. Too bad no one does anything about this type of abuse and harassment! Someday, someday!
@theCraynzz Perhaps the clip would give you some insight into the mindset of people utterly high, allow you to see how their minds would actually work?
In case anyone is interested, this scene which is similar to the scene from the book was based on Philip K. Dick's own experience. The entire story is loosely based on a specific period of PKD's life. If you have the DVD, listen to the commentary track.
he probably grabbed the bike from the dump thinking someone was selling it, paid the dumpster, and already had the pants on to begin with...substance D!
Substance D may cause an increase in paranoia, and has a tendency to disable your bullshit detector. When taken in social settings, feedback loops of nonsense may occur.
@Neuromancer1970 Exactly - in fact, the monitoring of the scene is why Arctor is submitted to pyschoanalysis. You don't add the gears in the front and back, you multiply them, but none of them could understand that because the drugs, even though the uneducated black man they ask outside can figure it out immediately. The book is so much darker than the film... even though I love the film and its atmosphere so much.
@Danman429 Its about an ultra paranoid future USA where a massively addictive narcotic called "substance D" is spreading through the country like a plague. Reeves is a narc who infiltrates a gang of users but becomes addicted to "D" in the process. Among other subjects the film deals with the subject of paranoia and losing ones identity.
I absolutely love this film and novel, and all of the other Philip K Dick books.
Its both hilarious and disturbing to see them all banter back and forth with ridiculously complex conspiracy theories and extreme paranoia brought on by the effect of Substance D. Philip K Dick is a master writer.
yeah this scene was supposed to take place outside, and how barris was supposed to be talking about how black people stole it n sold it to him, and they asked a black guy on the street how much speeds it was and he corrected them, lol
freck is supposed to be in this scene, and the bike is supposed to be 20 bucks not 50 lol and a 10 speed not 18. they changed the story sooo much when they turned it into a movie

Is it me or does Keanu Reeves seem like he'd be a wet blanket at a party?
MUFC127 2 years ago 3
He'd just sit in the corner with an apathetic expression. No problem.

I absolutely love this film and novel, and all of the other Philip K Dick books.
Its both hilarious and disturbing to see them all banter back and forth with ridiculously complex conspiracy theories and extreme paranoia brought on by the effect of Substance D. Philip K Dick is a master writer.

My other favorite comedic scene in Scanner Darkly is for sure when Robert is arguing with Woody outside.
"Shut the fuck up."
"No why don't you-"
"SHUTTHEFUCKUP"

yeah this scene was supposed to take place outside, and how barris was supposed to be talking about how black people stole it n sold it to him, and they asked a black guy on the street how much speeds it was and he corrected them, lol

freck is supposed to be in this scene, and the bike is supposed to be 20 bucks not 50 lol and a 10 speed not 18. they changed the story sooo much when they turned it into a movie

I plead ignorance on this one... Was A Scanner Darkly based off of a book? ...

Philip K. Dick. He wrote many such books.

And yet in many ways it's exactly the same. Great movie, even better book.

That's cool. I wish I had time to read the book, it was a very intriguing movie.
