  • Give Linklater chance to adaptate futuristic Philip K. Dick novel, about human condition, expressed in decadent atmosphere, drug dealer characters, description of effects of most dangerous substances known to man. And all you''ll got it's 90's style "talkie picture" with Winona Ryder and Keanu Reaves lying on the couch and smoking pot.

    ah... plus rotoscope technique.

  • oh my god I love the animation so much

  • For those that don't know:

It's really an 18 speed bike. You don't add the 6 and 3, you multiply them.

  • @Tacoinmysoup Thanks tips

  • @Tacoinmysoup That is why fixies are so popular. Stoners hate math.

  • @Tacoinmysoup also, this is NOT an 18 speed bike, as there are only 2 front chain rings. 2x6=12

  • $23.75 is a good deal . . .

  • Sounds like a tweakers house outside Liberty, Missouri. Everyone in there is approaching day 4 and the shadow people are coming by more frequently. They should get some twine and make a hasty alert system out of the spare VCR and Lawn Mower parts lying in the side yard.

  • Winona's so hot.

  • shape shifting lizard bitches

  • what the fuck is this? what a mental film!

  • @tobyn123 it's based on an excellent book you ignorant dick

  • @mhaas871 i wasnt being ignorant you arse! im actually fascinated by it so suck my balls you arrogant bastard!

  • wrong aspect ratio :(

  • fucking gypsy grifters!

  • Beautiful scene. Anybody else notice the June of 44 poster in the background?...

  • why is gingers have souls the next video to show up?....gay

  • Barris definitely makes this film. RDJ is captivating.

  • Barris reminds me of my boss. He thinks he's amazingly smart but he's really stupid lol

  • God I hate Barris...

  • What a bunch of stupid stoners. I wanted to stab myself listening to that but luckily it was relatively short.

  • so....what happened to the pants he was wearing before he got the yellow ones?

  • nigga stole my bike!

  • Brilliant animation. Horrible, boring and pretentious movie.

  • One of my favorite scenes. EVER. Such an epic cast

  • Albino Shape-Shifting Lizard Bitches.

  • I thought Barris would be smart enough to figure out that 3 x 6 = 18.

  • @irishdan10990 @dubqnpdk Everybody wang-chung tonight

  • @irishdan10990 Stop justifying your drugaddiction to somebody else and just take them.

  • cool scene.. it's even weirder and more complex in the book, trippiest thing I've ever read. Phil K Dick <3

  • 5 people are getting WAY to close to this

  • What was Robert Downey Junior's character wearing before he was wearing the cycling shorts? and if he was wearing anything where are they now?

  • Orphan gears LMAO

  • lol I love Barris, Its like they took Walter right out of The Big Lebowski and just jacked him up on speed

  • Whole scene is greatest example of stoner logic

  • Masonic G on the door and the 666 discussion.

  • Shame they left out the next scene in the novel where a random guy in the street tells them it's two times nine equals sixteen gears, not two plus nine.

  • @astrophonix It is six back gears times 3 front gears to get the 18 speed. I am guessing he saw two the second time because the substance D was messing with his vision.

  • @astrophonix 2x9 is 18 though...

  • Best scene! crack up haha

  • Philip K. Dick hates those "idiot" private characters. He describes them in his books in many cases like in "The Three Stigmata of Palmer Eldritch" etc. You cannot wake up some day and believe you got education just because you are 30 or 40 and you suffered some things in your life. You have to seek out and learn what is the meaning of all this. And thats what philip is doing in his books. But saddly lazy characters dont even bother to use 1% of their brains to think. Instead they take drugs.

  • @AkaMouTinn there has been a war on drugs its been failing since the 30s but it was started by a mr ronald ragen even obama addressed this problem, am not disagreaing with you on the herion and just fyi your ancient greek is a little rusty its more used as a term describing someone of self-centeredness it had more to do with the social standing point of a person or someone lacking a trade. anywho you can qoute a scifi writer all you want the real information you should be taking out of my commen

  • @AkaMouTinn is this prohibition didnt work with alchohol and it wont work with marijuana if it wont work with pot than it wont work with anything else. when you tell someone they cant have something they go out and get it all iam saying is that this is not the way to do this you have to practice those values mentioned before otherwise no one will listen to you. but go ahead keep beleaving their lies your just one of those idiot characters your false philosipher so hates.

  • @AkaMouTinn only after you have exhasted all your resourses trying to find the truth will you trully be your strong characters see i bet you beleve that marijuana smoke kills brain cells due to the study done on monkeies in the 30s. what you fail to realize though is the conductors of that study assumed. again i agree there are those drugs that do acuall damage to your body but by saying oh kids just say no is never going to work thats the way of your idiots you have to inform them which

  • @AkaMouTinn ones do and dont, this is true enlightenment Neutrality. u see you are so bias i bet you either had someone with drug problems in your life or simply just beleved all the hipe. again yes some drugs really are bad for you but you deal in absolute "your either with us or against us" thats no way to live a life just open your eyes a little bit and see that life is not the cut and dry there is no such thing as good and evil the purpose of life is just that to simply exist and enjoy

  • @AkaMouTinn existance who r you to tell someone they cant enjoy their existance the way they want to. me personly i love getting up in the morning loading a fat bowl of weed and watching the sun come up its so peacefull and tranquill a pure orgasim. i bet you hate that thought oooo iam a law breaker oh my god. thats so archaic. so go ahead keep beleving the lies keep quoteing and twisting those words in your head increasing your bias belefs it dosnt matter at all. other countries have already

  • @AkaMouTinn proven how tolerance, supervision and moderation can basicly over turn drug problems its just a matter of time before we all realize this is true for all drugs not just classess 2 and 3. hell states have even started to prove it to our government so i hope you r alive when anyone can go around smoking a joint whenever they want and you cant do shit about it.

  • there is no war on drugs......... there are lazy characters and strong characters. I give you another line from philip to enlighten your philosophical journeys "Boldness is no virtue If it causes the surprised organism to fall a thousand years, wondering as he plunges how he went wrong and where the error lay." Each time you inject heroin tou your body you surprice yourself with a fake emotion that was not generated by an outer reaction. Thus you become an idiot (greek word for private).

  • total madness. Thats what drugs do your mind. Be real stay out of drugs. Philip k Dick wrote this book to show you 100% what drugs do.

  • @AkaMouTinn i dissagree he wrote this to show you what alot of something can do to you, alot of anything is bad for you total fact even vitimans or acually medicine can do bad things to you with an inhibition of moderation. now iam not one for harder drugs ie meth herione, pcp, but even cocaine can be controlled using moderation. sure there are those drugs that still will do serious damage to your body but you cant try to prohibit something its just not going to happen tolerance and

  • @irishdan10990 The answer to your comments comes straight from Philip K. Dick "Drug misuse is not a desease, it is a decision, like the decision to step out in front of a moving car". "Reality is that which when you stop believing in it, it doesn't go away". You use drugs to correct natures faults. You dont use drugs to experiment with false "happiness". Read a few books and then you can have an opinion about what philip is writing about. And dont try to customize anything to your needs.

  • @AkaMouTinn ill give you ur quote but you are sadly mistaken in your opinion of my "needs" iam very informed iam not some bumbling idiot spewing summarized excepts from popular regertiation i was trying to make a valid point to you surpassing the views of one author i was looking at this in a more broad spectrum you sould take a look a a little video called The Union the business behind getting high it opens your eyes to both sides of the issue by revealing acual truths on this information war

  • @AkaMouTinn moderation, and good ole supervision is key the war on drugs will never win untill this is realized the government could easily control the manufactue, retail, useage, and treatment of every "iilegal" drug with this philosiphy but it wont because its stubborn just the same way there will never be leagal prostitution which acually would cut down on the std rate in this country. one day though very soon marijuania will show the government how this can be achived.

  • theirs a masonic G their....hmmm....another ubliminal message

  • @isurfvan At what time? Write like this for example: 00.00

  • Yeah no shit Nikolas. They are druggies, that miscalculation is part of the reason it was funny.

  • we are all waaaay too close to this...

  • Comment removed

  • that's the kind of conversation that you can find often among average people. 2+2=5

  • What is that big masonic G doing on that white door?

(At 2:25 in the middle of that house (on fire) ;-)

  • Awesome movie but, this scene is just too... I dont know what. oh yeah, corny. And thats coming from someone that loves this movie.

  • 2:04 before I knew about neuroscience and biofeedback technology.....I thought there was a camera in a fish on my wall. Just wanted to pop it's camera eye out! It is very scary when it happens to you. They reveal where you are and such, even encourage strange conclusions that you might come to. You appear as if insane, but this is just one of the many programs they put on people. Too bad no one does anything about this type of abuse and harassment! Someday, someday!

  • For this, 18-10, I'll give you $23.75

  • Read the book.

  • my favorite scene. :)

  • shape shifting lizard bitches!

  • shape shifting lizard bitches

  • lets just go rescue the orphan gears man!

  • Richard Linklater, ftw.

  • Why does he start masterbating at 0:35? The exchange of words seem to pertain to sex prostitution.More subliminal BS

  • @rentintin2000 He is scratching his groin

  • Man I get paranoid just watching this.

  • Lets just go RESCUE THE ORPHAN GEARS dude!

  • Haha He goes "what is it?" when the guy has the bike right in front of him

  • 6 X 3 = 18 speed.

^ Sums up the whole film, good film but it does not justify how amazingly awesome the book is.

  • Hahaha, I just bought a bike from a guy on the street, and I walked in with it and went "Total, total total totally total providence!"

  • that clip felt like a waste of time.... like i was surrounded by idiots

  • @theCraynzz you have a typo there, you should have said "High people" instead of idiots

  • @theCraynzz Perhaps the clip would give you some insight into the mindset of people utterly high, allow you to see how their minds would actually work?

  • @LackingSaint I found this scene hilarious and very true to life. I've met and had conversations with people like this. Conversations about nothing.

  • @LackingSaint maybe it was too many high people in the room where i was too LOL...

  • There's no words to describe what kind of materpiece this fragment is, as well as the entire movie of course. Just brilliant!

  • This is a boooooyyys bike.

  • In case anyone is interested, this scene which is similar to the scene from the book was based on Philip K. Dick's own experience. The entire story is loosely based on a specific period of PKD's life. If you have the DVD, listen to the commentary track.

  • 18 - 10. Ill give you 23.75

  • Why do people repeat quotes in the comments box?

  • @mortdog oh shit, accidentaly i flagged you're other comment XS

  • he probably grabbed the bike from the dump thinking someone was selling it, paid the dumpster, and already had the pants on to begin with...substance D!

  • I would adopt the orphan gears.

  • "These albino shapeshifting lizard bitches"

  • i really think this move is about CCC's

  • "albino shape shifting lizards" haha substance d off course

  • no to invalidate your intuition, but this is a BOYS bike

  • haha i love this movie

  • lmao, @ those guys told me it had 18 gears, it only has 9 my gosh hahahaha

  • does the movie include the part where the dude they bought it from explains the simple math equation involved and how their brains are all screwed?

  • @Gibson889 Nope, it's sort of implied. In the book the guy just explains it and 'Hank' uses it as an excuse to send 'Fred' for mental examination.

  • I saw a few seconds of this clip in a video by farhank. Look at the masonic symbol on the door in the background. :O

  • @lilcajunfever i see it

  • @lilcajunfever i dont see it..

  • Love this movie. Hilarious/fairly accurate portrayal of drug behavior/thought.

  • Substance D may cause an increase in paranoia, and has a tendency to disable your bullshit detector. When taken in social settings, feedback loops of nonsense may occur.

  • The movie is awesome, and this scene is hilarious.

  • I got this on DVD, love it!

  • "albino shape-shifting lizard bitches"

  • LET'S JUST GO RESCUE THE ORPHAN GEARS DUDE!!!

  • "What do you think happened to the missing gears?"

    Keanu Reeves

  • these "hoister" friends

    these "gypsie grifters"

  • AMAZING MOVIE!!! The graphics make me remember of GTA, hehehe... I've gotta say that Waking life is better, though.

  • For this I'll give you 23,75 xD

  • this movie was awesome. the script is almost as if Quintin Tarrantino wrote it cuz the dialogue is amazing as well as the visuals

  • @Neuromancer1970 Exactly - in fact, the monitoring of the scene is why Arctor is submitted to pyschoanalysis. You don't add the gears in the front and back, you multiply them, but none of them could understand that because the drugs, even though the uneducated black man they ask outside can figure it out immediately. The book is so much darker than the film... even though I love the film and its atmosphere so much.

  • lmao I laugh so hard at this everytime :p such brilliance behind this movie!

  • "Let's just go rescue the orphan gears, dude!"

  • hahaha

    best bit

  • Robert Downey Jr. total total totally total total stole the show for me in this movie!! XD

  • Bon sang je viens de découvrir ce film, oui je sais je suis à la bourre... C'est de la bombe!!!

  • My favorite scene!!! Ps Robert downey jr is total total total totally total totally handsome!

  • This movie was very hard to understand, but I liked this scene, and a few others.

  • total! total! total! totally! total! total

  • "those albino shape-shifting lizard BITCHES!"

the best scenes of this movie are the ones w/ barris, luckman, and/or freck.

  • we are waaaaaaayyyyy to close to this! lol

  • 12 speed bike!!!

  • are you for certain of that?

  • Dang. Even animated RDJ gives me urges...

  • total! total! totally! total! i <3 RDJ

  • this is fucking amazing. "oh my god, theres no telling what elsse they've done"

  • Comment removed

  • yah, what's this movie's plot cuz ive heard some awesome shit about it n i really wanna see it soon as i get some boomers :)

  • @Danman429 Its about an ultra paranoid future USA where a massively addictive narcotic called "substance D" is spreading through the country like a plague. Reeves is a narc who infiltrates a gang of users but becomes addicted to "D" in the process. Among other subjects the film deals with the subject of paranoia and losing ones identity.

  • @Datathief100 Yah, I know, I watched like 2 days after i posted that comment. GREAT FILM!

  • @Datathief100 it also deals with heavy police surveillance and deception

  • I need to see this movie.

  • total total totally total total TOTAL Providence!

  • @ireallydontcare3384 lol love it when he says that.

  • If he's wearing the pants they gave him what happened to the pants he was already wearing? D:

  • @grimmpoe if it was anything like most of the rest of the film, he wasnt wearing any :P

  • my favorite scene

  • this movie was SO FUCKING HILARIOUS

  • There's only one thing we can do to thwart the plot of these albino, shapeshifting, lizard bitches!

  • my favorite quote in the movie

  • Let's just rescue the orphaned gears, man!!!!

  • Robert Downy Jr. in this movie is hilarious, although it took me a while to realize it was him.

  • lol this is my favorite scene in the movie.

  • hahahahahaha "i just got Greek'd!"

  • i was trippin on shrooms when i saw this movie rofl good times

  • They were trippin on Substance D.

  • Is it me or does Keanu Reeves seem like he'd be a wet blanket at a party?

  • He'd just sit in the corner with an apathetic expression. No problem.

  • ''total total total total" lmao

  • I absolutely love this film and novel, and all of the other Philip K Dick books.

Its both hilarious and disturbing to see them all banter back and forth with ridiculously complex conspiracy theories and extreme paranoia brought on by the effect of Substance D. Philip K Dick is a master writer.

  • arent they all on drugs lol

  • nowadays who isnt on drugs? not me... :)

  • Comment removed

  • what he said after "Eins, zwei , drei" ?

  • Something like, "Heel." I don't think he's the best at German. =P

  • One of the best damn movies EVER!

  • ohhhhhhhhh yeah reminds me of acid!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Greeks,gypsy's , grifters (con men)

    all screw people over

  • wynona was so hot in this film. Also... what does it mean to "get greeked?"

  • To get "ripped off", or "gypped".

  • well, i mean i get that... but what is it derived from? What does being greek have to do with being a con artist or whatever?

  • @doomsday19821982

    Screwed over

  • My other favorite comedic scene in Scanner Darkly is for sure when Robert is arguing with Woody outside.

    "Shut the fuck up."

    "No why don't you-"

    "SHUTTHEFUCKUP"

  • Lol,this looks like an episode of Seinfeld...

  • lol you´re right :)

  • yeah this scene was supposed to take place outside, and how barris was supposed to be talking about how black people stole it n sold it to him, and they asked a black guy on the street how much speeds it was and he corrected them, lol

  • freck is supposed to be in this scene, and the bike is supposed to be 20 bucks not 50 lol and a 10 speed not 18. they changed the story sooo much when they turned it into a movie

  • I plead ignorance on this one... Was A Scanner Darkly based off of a book? ...

  • Yes.

  • Philip K. Dick. He wrote many such books.

  • And yet in many ways it's exactly the same. Great movie, even better book.

  • That's cool. I wish I had time to read the book, it was a very intriguing movie.

  • @neverfamouswhat they had to account for inflation and improved bicycle technology, somethings sci-fi never acknowledges

  • just a little observation for u movie buffs.

u see at the end how woodys character grabs the bike at the top of the wheel, then walks out holding the frame...wtf. just a little goof =)
