Also, when I took an electronics class, I used to hook a couple of function generators in series to make a really simple polyphonic synthesizer. I had like twelve different waveform combinations, among sine, triangle and square waves, but my most favorite setup sounded like two slightly detuned square waves.

More recently, I combined the volume and pitch controls on a 555 timer square wave generator, and it became a pulse width adjustment.
