Nice fishing! Although it wasn't really necessary to gaf the lake trout at the beginning of the video. If you were eating the fish, I would suggest a fish other than lake trout because lake trout out of lake superior have a different diet than ones out of a normal lake so they don't taste as nice.
In regard to your comment about Lake Superior trout not tasting good, shows your ignorance of the subject. There are many subspecies of lake trout in Lake Superior. The ones I see caught in the video are excellent eating fish.
i have acsess to a private lake via canoe ONLY. and had no idea for the longest time that it contained lakers until i hooked one up almost by accident fishing with a crankbait. It wasnt big but its a very deep lake and i have reson to belive there might be some monsters in there. problem is i dont own a down rigger or electric motor therefore trolling is not really an option. does anyone have any tips on how i can catch some lakers from a canoe without a down rigger? thanks in advance.
@quiny0883 You don't need riggers to fish lakers. Troll spoons and other baits from the surface down to 20'-30' in the early sping and late fall. We usually fish them just as the ice goes out. We also do a bwca trip in early June and the lakers are typically still "shallow". If they are down 30'-40' drop a heavy weight in front of a spoon.
In 1987 my Dad and my uncle were fishing on Higgins Lake here in the LP and my dad hooked a monster fish that towed their Bass boat around for 3 1/2 hours! But when my dad and uncle tried to being it up it broke the hook and got away. They were fishing in a 135' hole and the winter before someone caught a 37lb Lake Trout through the ice! So they think it had to be a 40lb+ Laker. My uncle said it felt like it was a concrete block on the end of my dads rod!
I'm a Michigander and have fished Higgins Lake many times. My biggest laker there was just over 19 lbs. - caught it about 10 years ago. But I hooked one in the NW corner by the deepest part of the lake that was MUCH bigger. Had it on for about 15 minutes and it started doing the head-shake thing, then my damn snap swivel broke. I'll never skimp on those again...
The biggest confirmed laker I ever knew to come out of there was a 33 pounder by the north state park...
Not used to seeing gaff used on lakers - good video though
