  • San is used for first meeting or one's boss.

Chan is used to a child, family, or intimate younger.

Sama is used to royal family or Pope.

Sensei is used for a teacher or a doctor.

Although Senpai is senior, it is only among students.

It's boss when it becomes a member of society.

  • @49INFINITY

    Senpai isn't used only student.

It is used to older person close of the year in a community.

For example, school, sport team, orchestra, dojo, bukatsu and company.

Sensei is used to person with expertise.

So, it can be used to architect, politician and lawer, too.

  • @architec2651 When explained to details, he thought whether to get confused and it omitted. If truly interested to Japan, the rest will be studied by real experience.

  • @49INFINITY

    そうでしたか…

  • arigato sensei!

  • whoa... slow down there, Ken-sensei. the Japanese pronunciation bits are perfect, but in English you jabber faster than some meth addicts i've heard... i can barely process what you're saying before you're even onto the next sentence. I understand the intent is to cram as much of a lesson as you can in a limited amount of time and/or average attention span, but when you speak so fast and chop the clips so abruptly, it literally gives me a headache. Just a bit of constructive criticism...

  • Sailormoon poster at the back <3

  • "follow me! mah bitches" LOL XD

  • @katsumiizumi Hi. I'm a Japanese and I may explain. It is mainly used by little girls for little ones. It shouldn't necessarily little girls. Example; 「お兄たん!」 "Onii-tan!"(More immature and affable than "chan") For more one 「バチュルたんマジ電気」 "Bachuru-tan maji denki" means"Joltik's sheer electric"(Joltik's a kind of pokémon) More affection to it was expressed by adding "-tan". Sorry for my poor English. :/
  • so thats why sanji calls robin "ROBIN CHAN!"

  • FREEZE FRAME! :42

  • i heard those words before in this anime naruto

  • OMG Thanx So Much!! I alwayz wondered Y I Heard so many different words at the end of sum 1's name in anime!! Ur so Awsome!! Keep'em Coming!!

  • Ken-sama!

  • I'm sorry, but can you thoroughly explain "senpai" to me, if it actually means something. If you need an example in conversation look up "Tobi and Deidara in Naruto" I'm pretty sure Tobi will say it once or twice! Thanks so much!!!! Ken-SAMA

  • thanks Ken-sama u helped me figure it out i'm goin to use -kun on my boyfriend and awesome posters of sailor moon

  • Arigato Ken-sensei.. Or should I say Ken-san ? ;)

  • hm.. sometime in anime they use "kun" for girls too ... i dont know why

  • "Ah, I'm sorry, Kitty-chan. Was the oven hot?"

...Am I the only one that found that sentence oddly disturbing?

  • I see you are for USA, but your English seems a little bit of. Is it just me who don't dialect or is it an other thing?

  • yay FMA and thanks for the tips

  • Maid-sama....Usui really respects Misaki XD

  • wonder who was the 3 that dis like this vid

  • hah im a poet lol just dnt call me sensai plz

  • wow fire files lol

  • i love japan and i wanna learn to speak japanese to lol

  • Sakura is a sexy babe!!!!

  • @inblank haha lol not in this vid lol

  • okay, ken-sensei, I won't call you that.

  • Yeah what does the -chi honorific mean anyway? i use it on my Himuro~chi

  • With "sama" you also put down on an envelope when you mail a letter to someone as well since letter writing is more formal. With "chan," even with adults, you can also use with nicknames. Like if a guy is named lets say Tatsuya, you can call him "Ta(t)/(c)-chan." I have a friend that I work out with whose last name is Matsui, and we all call him "Ma(t)(c)-chan."

  • ...i love this videos...

  • BTW, my video response just happens to be a coincidence. I found yours after I put mine up.

  • Ken chan, your video is pretty spot on. I'd just like to add that you wouldn't call any boy or man older than you "kun". Even for a teenager, say a high school first grader, he wouldn't call his "sempai" Ken kun. He would call him Ken san or just sempai. I've subbed to your channel. Looking forward to watching more of your videos. BTW, I'm American, living in Japan 20 years.

  • Ken-sama-senpai-sensei-san~~

  • ha your so funny ^^!

  • What does it mean if you put domo at the end of someones name? Jinta-domo???

  • My friend called me Liz-chii

    What does "chii" mean?

  • ARIGATO KENsensei!! :)

  • You know, I just thought about it, and if I ever went to Japan, the only two lines I'd need to know are "Hey how are you?" and "I like waffles"...

now I already know how to say the first line... but does anyone know about the second one?

  • @Sim1114 I like waffles = Waffuru ga suki desu.

    @KenKyanon, right?

  • @kenkyanon what about baa-chan and nee-chan

  • @werewolf15orlando That's just baa - "grandma" with -chan after it, and nee - "sister" with -chan after it

  • @KenKyanon thx man, I've been calling my grandma baa-chan, but I didn't know if it was right. So if nee- is sister, would I call my sister nee-chan? and what would I call my mom, brother, aunt, and cousin (female). sorry for all these questions, but I have a big family

  • @KenKyanon What'sthe diffrences between Calling Kagome-chan and the little children chan I mean Kagome is not young and Sango-chan not a children...Please explain?

  • @KenKyanon just wondering as to baa-"chan", why would it be this ending suffix if the meaning is "little one"? wonderful videos BTW...and i was just wanting to know officially so i can mess with my baa =D

  • I was wondering... What does -Chama mean? Ive heard it's a suffix otaku's made up to show respect and endearment towards a character, but is it used outside otaku fandomness? :P

  • @Rainbowsinside It's baby-talk for -sama. That's what I was told, anyway :)

  • @riverstar97 Ah I see, thank ya. :)

  • this is SO useful lol i never knew sama was refering to REALY high status i just thought it was a symbol for respect like you would use -sama for someone you highly respect and -kun for someone you know but still arent on first name basis with. also is it true that you can use -chan on a guy if u have an intamite relationship with him? like some funny guys in anime say -chan to their guy friend to piss him off or just show that they're past firs tname basis but arent gay lol

  • @azulbeauty101 hahah, yeah that would definitely be for the "piss him off" purpose. Personally I wouldn't let my guys friends call me -chan, but you are right it does happen.

  • @KenKyanon what about dono?

  • Can chan also be used for family and friends? Cause that's what I heard

  • @nocturnal7otaku25 Yup of course ^^

  • Comment removed

  • FUCK YEA ! YOU ARE OTAKU!!!!!

  • I love anime I would like to learn anime from u if it's ok would you be my sansei? (^∇^)⁇

  • Awesome! Origato!

  • cool

  • K i dont get it? Kun is used for a boy yes, I know but what exactly is it? I skipped through the vid for some reason ._. lets just say someone who is obsessed anime freak and hates when only I mention anything anime related was in the room, so can someone please send me the meaning?

  • Firefiles lol thats the background song

  • Very interesting thank you! I got this link from looking up "What does san mean?" and got an Answers.com page. :)

  • I know this is probably the wrong vid to ask but im not sure if it is or not so, my brother always yells "Baka deshino" im not sure if its spelled right or if its even a word(if its not i get to yell Damare at him ^^) What in the world does Deshino mean!?(i typed it by sounding it out so you should be able to figure it out)

  • @emilyv26 hm, sounds like "baka desu no" and "baka desu" means "idiot" but the "no" at the end sounds kinda weird. So yeah, yell damare all you want at him haha

  • @KenKyanon Thank you alot now i get to mess with him. ^^

  • xDDD

If u speak japanese like in 2:14 it's sounds cute! ^^

  • sugoi *.*

  • you should do a katakana lesson.

  • what does senpai mean ? asin like kaname-sempai ?

  • @laroosa95 senpai means "upper classmen" or "senior" so as you can guess its used for people above you in grade, or in a particular group like a club.

  • @laroosa95 i like vampire knight too!

  • @bustersuks I loves VK!

  • @bustersuks me too!

  • @laroosa95 did you get that from vampire knight

  • um, idk if this was in another comment, but in Nabari no Ou, Hattori was once called Hattori-han. what does that mean?

  • @0015804875 -han is the kansai-ben version of -san. and kansai ben is just another dialect, but don't worry its the only mildly popular one.

  • @KenKyanon ohh. ok then. thx. :)

  • Thanks for teaching me japanese

  • oi, my beer literally came gushing out of my nose at 3:30, you just earned a thumbs up. fkn lol.

  • you forgot "tran". thats useally for cousins

  • Haha ^^ Make More I've Learned Alot (:

  • Thank you so much! But what does -pyon means? I dont know how its spelled but Mikan in Gakuen Alice say Lucy-pyon to a friend. What does it mean?

Thank you and sorry for my bad english :P

  • @xMeandYourCatx hahah, -pyon is a pretty rare, silly/cutesty nickname-ish type suffix. It doesn't really have any meaning but is just used for sillyness.

  • what does san mean in rosario vampire? because tsukune says moka-san but shes not a mrs or mr, she,s still at school?

  • @MrTommoboy oh it means the same. -san is the default for everyone, not necessarily exactly "mr or mrs". Thats just a close equivalent. ^^

  • you make me lol!!!

  • you are a really good teacher!

    :D

  • fire flies <3

  • Im learning Japanese THNX!!!!

  • Very informative! :D i was rather cruious about Japanese honorifics, and my friend recommended this video, and it was very helful! Good job! :)

  • you spoiled fullmetal alchemist to me xD!

  • @KenKyanon

your videos are really cool! (subbed :D)

but I'd also have a question.

could you tell me when sempai, danna and kohai are used?

I heard that senpai is used for camarades, danna for superiors and that kohai is for inferiors.

    am I right?

  • @maddythewitch Thanks! and close,

senpai means senior, and you can use it like sensei, as a suffix and standing alone.

danna can mean master, but also husband.

and kohai is for juniors, but unlike senpai, you don't use it as a suffix or standing alone. Simply a noun.

  • @KenKyanon thank you again, it was really helpful

  • Kenさまありがとう!(^_^)

  • Females can use sama to show affection for males right?

  • @hitsusatsu11 Heh Not in todays Japan at least. If you used a -sama on anybody of "normal" stature it would probably just come off as sarcastic.

  • @KenKyanon KK, thanks. I just ask since you here anime girls call their guy crushes "sama" all the time.

  • THATS AWESOME

  • So, we should call you Ken-kun? Or Ken-sama?

  • @skylardanks hahah, you can just call me ken. but if i had to choose i would definitely prefer sama. ;P
