  • "ALL television stations in Canada have call letters that start with a 'C'"

And the second letter is very restricted. It must be F,G,H,I,J,K,Y,or Z (the CRTC further restricts those choices to F,H,I,J or K). No idea why the CBC got to use Chile's "CB" prefix, though. Must have just been a grandfather clause.

  • Canada apparently has a treaty with Chile allowing Canada to use "CB".

Before the current CBC was created, Canada was permitted use of "CN", "CP", and "CR" - Toronto's CBL was previously CRCT. Canada apparently also used "CQ" very early on.

  • "Now, when you have call letters that form a word, it's hard to resist."

I assume that's why they referred to the station as "C-H-E-X" (as opposed to pronouncing it as if it were the cereal) until when I assume to be sometime in the 1990s (judging by the appearance of the news openings in your other video of CHEX)?

  • Check out chextv . com - CHEX is one of those lucky stations that has actually survived. They're still affiliated with CBC after all these years, call themselves CHEX, and the Channel 12 designation is mentioned at least once a day. Same with CKWS in Kingston. Corus owns both of them and they appear very committed to local branding, and that goes on the radio. All their radio stations ID the full call letters at least once hourly.

  • That should be thankful enough (or by now, the CBC would've had to set up a repeater there already).

  • they're not luck to have survived. that station is a complete embarassment.

  • That was a nice explanation CHEX used on how their call letters came to be. A lot of local TV stations just won't bother telling viewers anything about themselves so that was a creative way to do it.

  • Interesting, I didn't know Peterborough had a station. I guess the reason we don't get it here in London.

I'm assuming they've long since been swallowed by CTV or the poison that is A-Channel.

  • *I guess the reason we don't get it here in London is because of the channel 12 designation. Which is the same as CKCO if I'm not mistaken. - Is what I meant to write.

  • No, CKCO is channel 13.

  • CKCO is on Cable 12 in London, but on Channel 13. But in any case CHEX is too far away for it to be carried in London, and unlike the Toronto stations, doesn't have transmitters west of Toronto.
