@Darduel No, Leonard  celebrates Christmas (more specifically the ancient pagan festival of Saturnalia) it's Sheldon who doesn't even though his family does and are Christian. They put up a tree in season three I believe when Leonard and Penny are dating. They call it Newtonmas as a joke and appeasement for Sheldon because Sir Isaac Newton was born on December 25th.

Whoever wrote this episode really gets dysfunctional parents. Leonard doesn't expect anything because he's never had anything on his birthdays. It's another day to him and Sheldon backs that up being the person he is. Maybe this is why Leonard is comfortable with Sheldon who reminds him of his parents. Or his mother. As a person who understands, it's not funny to me. It's sad. Not trying to seem pathetic. Not all parents are perfect.

Actually in my family a person tells how much they can afford and we give them three things that we'd like to have. It's still a surprise and we get what we want! It's works for us. As a kid I disliked getting things I'd never use but still had to pretend that I liked/wanted. This saves feelings. It's also fun to think up what you want. A win-win situation and no ones ever hurt/offended. I dislike this part of Xmas. I have a friend whose family compair the $ of their gifts one to another. Sad.
