@cuoredeinidi - I love your metaphor. No one ever sang like this BEFORE and no one has sung like this SINCE.
Callas was Callas, and you can't compare her to anyone, or anyone to HER. Her voice, even after it's best days, could, in this kind of music, drill a hole into the brain. The woman possessed a talent and artistry that will never be duplicated. Like the T-Rex, she's extinct, but she lives forever.
@tez601 Still is..she set very high standards in Opera and music in general, which is the ability not only scream so magnificent, but also read the text at the same time...
I find Callas here in superlative voice for such a late period in her career. The low notes are like thunder, the cavatina beautifully sung (even with the slight unsteadiness on the top B's), and the cabaletta is a barn burner. Only Callas could command and vanquish this kind of music with such authority and brilliance. This is one of her best recorded performances of the 1960's.
I agree that, although she was past her 'prime', Callas' late-50s/early-60s recordings are the best. It's the same with my other favourite singer, Edita Gruberova whose best singing occurred a decade after her prime.
It's super beautiful, as ever with Maria Callas, Authority and fragility, soul... I love the Gioconda pic in the center of the aria. Thank you Onegin!
So, it doesn´t matter the ¨problems¨. So, it doesn´t matter ANYTHING. She is Callas and that´s it. Ok. What a great favour and love for art and artists. Nothing matters: ¨she¨ is ¨she¨, or ¨he¨ is ¨he¨, and that´s it.
If Michelangelo's hands had become tremulous with age and fatigue from having carved so much in marble, some people would criticise and delight in being able to point out where he trembled as he carved. Others would enjoy discovering what he was able to still carve, and what he was still trying to carve, grateful for even a foggy window into the world of genius, that many with steadier hands could not see.
The intensity and clarity is provided in a great performance. The top is slightly wobbly in places. But it is the voice we know very well and love as Maria Callas. Thank you R. P.
to be honest, I prefer this to some of her early-mid 50 recordings! it is said that a soprano achieves more and more qualities when she is about 40, which I think is true, in Maria Callas' voice. BRAVA MARIA!!!
Of course this is drmatically intense - but so many comments seem like rationalizations for a worn voice and inadequate technique of a woman in her early 40s. I wait for the comments where it is said Callas sings wonderfully w/o any excuses,
It totally baffles my mind to read some of the comments. This is not great for Callas, but compared to the crap that is out there today it is AWESOME. And she went downhill....so what? She still made some legendary performances and recordings in her lifetime. Unbelievable singing. Get over it.
I really enjoy this performance, as I do most of Callas' performances.
But this statement is tired and boring and you can find similar statements throughout the history of opera. "compared to the crap that is out there today"
"What is boring is the singing now" again you think this is a new statement, but in every age of opera you can find similar statements. They even said this when Callas was singing, lamenting that the decades before were so much better.
All throughout the history of opera critics have made these declarations. They say much more about the person making them, than having any tangible accuracy.
Perfefta sia sul piano della vocalità che su quello del'interpretazione. Anzi, come interprete la Callas è semplicemente unica e senza rivali.Aveva problemi vocali? Questa aria - difficilissima-è eseguita alla perfezione.
Callas is well supported by the Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire under Rescigno. In his exhaustive guide to her recordings (The Callas Legacy), John Ardoin deems this aria her finest performance in this all Verdi recital. This is Callas at her best, albeit not in her prime. Bravissima!
Sorry, I don't agree, John Ardoin has if own opinion and I have mine. Like callasian fan, moan that Maria accedes recording this aria. The intention is without a doubt, but the difficulties, the high Cs are screaming - and has so many- , non trills, hollow bottom, etc. Thus is utopian to interpret. Non offense, please
Maybe it's offensive to some, but it's true, Some of those C are painful . But then Callas is one of those pleasures that does not come unalloyed. You have to take the pain along with it. For many that adds spice to the listening. For others it's just painful.
Even if not in her prime, Callas is able to inhabit the role emotionally as none other can. One hears this from the opening notes. And her technique serves her well in the coloratura section. If Caballe has a gift for early Verdi, Callas has a genius. Thanks for posting, Onegin65.
ha SOLO un organo irrigidito, ribelle, stanco. Ma per TUTTO il resto, è quasi superiore al povero Verdi

@cuoredeinidi Thank you, Cuore! I believe in la Divina. So many who have never flown, sit on the sand and criticize the wing beats of their betters.
