I am a big LBJ fan (though I don't advocate him deepening our Vietnam involvement, it was better than Goldwater wanting to nuke Vietnam), but if we elected Mcgovern in 68- we'd have been out of Vietnam earlier, and we wouldn't have had our National Debt tripled.
