I tried building a small dome out of bamboo with your N-formula just to try the compexity of it and it worked perfectly, next im going to build a shed using wooden beams, maybe a little bit more complicated with angles and stuff. Thanks for the useful and accurate numbers. And hope everything is working out good with your robot toys, I hope i'll see one in stores soon so I can buy one :)
love your vids. they are easy to follow and the information is very helpful. I'm just wondering if the amount of caffeine in your system would also be helpful to the rest of us! :) hehe great job on the tutorial!
oh maaaan! great! i just have one question... hmmm... (sorry but my english is quite fuckedup)
the links! i mean... in the metal dome, if the N stick, is 1 m (so the others are 0.8... and so on), what happend with the links? this 1 m is from the pern? from the start of the angle? i dont know if is understandable what im saying hahaha... cause sometimes people put the perns right in the sticks, and other times, people use like a little exagon or pentagon with 5 or 6 holes and put there sticks..
WOOHOO! I'm pretty smart and I LOVE whittling something that looks complicated down to a single post-it note! So I got the math, the specs, a couple of doodles and even some trivia on a post-it!! PLUS a couple of pretty entertaining videos! THANKS!!
I love the part at the end with the trampoline gym and rope! I've always wanted something like that and I've always wanted to build a dome. Now I have to make one of those. Thanks for sharing!
how many soccer balls make a building... I just ordered 90 + 60 + 120 =270, and since I was smart , I ordered an extra 30 soccer balls... super glue is ordered too.
For use as a greenhouse, what do you plan on using...polycarbonate, or plastic? Or do you not plan on making a greenhouse out of this?
I'm also curious (since you are obviously very mathematically talented), assuming you make maximum use of the soil space, and assuming you use compost tea on top of maximally productive soil, and assuming 2000 cal/day, how big would a greenhouse have to be to support one person for one year?
I love the explanations in the two videos, and am really getting a kick out of all the stuff you've been building. I must admit, I may be a little bummed when you get back to the robot! Just watching how you solve all of the little situations you run into is great.
But I've got a quick question about the dome - At the joints of each piece, is any significant error introduced? Each end is mashed down by roughly the same length, but the length of each piece varies, meaning a larger % ?
Umm..... its the length from one hole to the other hole that is important. The length of the pipe doesn't matter.
When I punched the second hole in the pipes, the first hole was on a post at a measured distance to make the distance between them consistent and accurate.
How far along are you on the actual robot? Last time I saw it you were working on it in your garage. Have you just been building structures to work in?
I built the dome with my own advice.... as a qualified structural engineer.
If you're going to ask about a "certified" structural engineer.... I don't care about certificates and degrees, and useless papers that people pay schools to give out. They mean little.
I built a model and used tubing bolted together to make the joints. Idea from desert domes. I guess rubber hose would work. 3 pieces bolted in the center to make the 6 way connector. 1 long 2 short to make the bottom 4 way connector, 5 short bolted on the end to make the 5 way.
By the way, awesome project you've got going on! I can't find the time to watch all of your videos, so I hope that you wouldn't mind me asking how you can afford all of this?
Since he lives on almost nothing (solar power, wood heat, simple food, no mortgage), whenever he does a job like building my Alaska cabin he saves the money. Then when he has a big project like this he can dip into it. It doesn't cost all that much if you are buying the cheapest materials in bulk from Home Depot, or getting them for free or next-to-free off Craigs List (like the $10 windows he found). Basically Jaimie saves the money by "spending" personal effort and using his creativity.
Great explanation vid! Very easy to follow and complete. Inspired me to build a minitature matches dome and then maybe think about doing a big metal one :)
Hey, I'm assuming your calcs include the bulge of the soccer ball and don't just create flat pentagons and hexagons on the dome surface. If so do the hexagons become totally composed of equilaterals on the vertical parts?
Anyway, crab apple trees grow very easily. So he said that the easiest way is to just dig up (or somehow get) a stump from a crab apple tree, cut a branch off an apple tree that you like, and graft it on to the stump with a tree bandage.
do it with a long diagonal cut (not just straight across the branch or the stump)
He said to lean the branch into the wind so that the tree will not break during windstorms.
Fantastic pair of videos, Jaimie! Clear, precise, useful information delivered in a clear, easy to understand fashion. Thanks very much, I've been wondering about that for a long time now. And a great ending! Looks like a lot of fun!
Sweet! Thanks! :-) I'm glad they turned out well. :-) Man... it was way easier making an explanation video than trying to work on something AND video at the same time. :-P
Well put! I have studied dome building for quite some time now, and this is by far the most simply stated. Great job! Wish I could be there to help you with some of your projects. I think we would make great neighbors.
Ya. People like to make things super complicated for some reason. I don't get it. ....except to think that they're trying to make you feel dumb or something lame like that.
That's basically exactly it. More specifically, they are trying to make themselves feel superior to you, because they can encode their simple knowledge in a complicated language that makes an otherwise simple thing impossible to understand to the common person. They feel that this sets them apart from the simple person (as an elite class), so they keep doing it because they want to be elite. After all, noone wants to go through tons of college to be told anything other than they are elite.
Yeah tell me about it. I was in college for engineering. Almost all of my classmates would cram stuff in their head just long enough to pass the exam, then forget it all.
So what was the point? What did they really learn? Definatly one of the worst experiences of my life. Some of the knowledge was really good... but the system is so broken that it's just not worth it.
I feel ya! I studied engineering too. I don't think the system is broken. The underlying problem is the widely-accepted notion that colleges/universities are there to prepare students to enter the workforce. That's a pile of rubbish! Academia is a giant industry that is designed to produce professors - there's nothing wrong with that. The only thing wrong with the "system" is that the corporate elite impose requirements for formal education, even if most students never use what they learn.
The system is broken because many of the teachers don't actually teach (or horribly suck at it). Some blatently don't even try, they just tell you to read the book. Then you get some who just expect you to learn way more than any normal human ever could in that short a period of time. Then you get the ones who are litterally wrong... but they write the tests... so...
And if you happen to be Dyslexic like I am... you're ROYALLY screwed since all of the school system is based on book learning.
You think the notion is to prepare people for something? Uhh.... wow. You're not really paying attention, are you! ha ha. They're making money. Thats it.
haka - maybe i failed to communicate my position? I agree with what you're saying.
JME - haha. i don't know if you were responding to me, but my general opinion is that "school sucks!" with a caveat that "school is cool!" if you want to do research or become a professor (same thing).

You lost me at the part where you said, "I Can't..."
That is total crap. there is always an excuse, and if you want to trade stories about how much a person can't, I can probably bury you by telling you where I was 10 years ago. It doesn't matter, though.
The point is, there is ALWAYS an excuse! There is in fact always a really "good" excuse for why you can't do something.
You're the one who has to decide what you're doing anyway.
@hakachukai You have to be intrinsically better than others to go to a "Higher education" lol. But you are very wrong; people dont go to college to feel better than themselves, they do it to either make money, or improve the world. I'm going into computer science to advance society, not to belittle others.
Gee, I went to college because at 17 I couldn't stand living with my parents anymore and I wanted to be somewhere where I could go crazy and experiment with life for awhile. Of course that was the 70s..... :D
20 lbs, two broken hearts and a D average later, I finally got my act together, LOL.
The most important thing to take away from education is the ability and desire to be a life-long learner. It takes lots of practice and discipline to be able to sit down and read for hours on end. Of course, that's not to say that education is necessary for one to become a life-long learner......
I wish I could do make myself such a house... But thanks to our shitty government, you cant get permission for it even if you own the land... whatever... :-(

Fantastic! I'm one of the ones who asked... and you did a beautiful job of getting to the point and making it simple! Thanks.
I have a friend who worked in an apple orchard for most of his life, so I asked about growing apple trees. This is what he said:
Apple seeds don't grow because the apples have been so cross bred that they just don't grow. If you can find pure bread apples they will grow.
The easy way: get a stump from a crab apple tree and graft a branch on it from an apple tree
