  • whats this about young crying on the moon?

  • He certainly flew the most daring test flight in the history of aviation the STS-1 with all the problems that thermal protection system he and Bob Crippen still went ahead.

  • venez voir mes vidéos et vous verrez la vérité!!

  • Did levon helm narrate the first part of The Right Stuff?

  • @KevLancaster1 Yes, he did. He actually had a co-starring role in the film as Chuck's colleague.

  • @tvspace is he the one he asks if he has a stick of chewing gum all the time? Ill pay ya back later,..... Fair enough!

  • @KevLancaster1 That's him. He had performed as a concert the night before he tracked our video and his voice was a bit strained... but who could turn down an opportunity to work with such a terrific guy!

  • @tvspace Ha excellent! His character really puts forward how a pilot cannot function in the air without great ground crew. I loved the opening line in The Right Stuff also, "There was a Demon....."

I'll look up his music now too. Cheers!

  • Great video.

  • I wish we'd cut this in HD.

  • @Gelf13 We can always do it again!

  • John Young... all american astronaut! never be anyone like him again.

  • During Columbia's liftoff, Young's heart rate didn't change by much; he was a old hand at spaceflight by this point. Crippen's heart rate however, changed quite a bit by comparison.

-From the compendium of goings on during Manned Spaceflight, "The Light Stuff"

  • wish you a very happy birthday john young - nik india

  • Happy Birthday, John!!!

  • Levon Helm!! His voice MAKES this video complete, other wise it would be a simple bio of badass fellow.

  • I like the way he talks about GUS!!!

  • U got to love John!!!!!!

  • Brilliant Video.

  • John Young's heartrate at lift-off on his way to the Moon was 70 and during the first Shuttle launch was 85 to 90. xD

The man is the definition of cool.

  • He said his heart was too old to go any faster. Isn't he super?

  • Thanks for this, tvspace.

In his experience, pioneering, commitment and advocacy, John Young has to be the greatest astronaut, or as a BBC 'Horizon' science documentary on him in the early 80's put it, 'the ultimate explorer'.

(When told that, Young typically brushed it aside).

I agree that Apollo's 10 and 16 do sometimes get overlooked, I am pleased to say that a recent BBC two parter on NASA, to a degree rectified that with Apollo 10, Young contributed to this doc as well as Armstrong.

  • Is that Levon Helm narrating?

  • Is it is. He was kind enough to lend us his voice.

  • Only that he didn't sit in the Apollo 11 rocket. At least there is not one person who has seen with her/his own eyes the "astronauts" get into the capsule. Everybody has information indirectly, by television. Period

  • I've always really admired John Young. My interest in the space program started with the Shuttle, so April 12, 1981 is burned into my brain forever and I remember that anniversary every year.

Brains, bravery, skill, good looks - he has it all.

  • John Young, A legend amongst men and I have been lucky emough to meet Charlie Duke and Gene Cernan who flew with him and they had nothing but good stories about him.

  • He was both the first and the last of the "New Nine" to fly in space.

  • John Young is one of my personal heroes. Great video.

  • John Watts Young-THE most experienced astronaut of all time. His record can never be surpassed.

I have had the huge pride of meeting the man twice-the word hero was meant for him. Most of the other astronauts knew him as the one who went the extra mile-he was/is the best.

  • Great tribute to one of America's space heros

  • The mini-series "From the Earth to the Moon" was great and show a lot of most of the Apollo missions but unfortunately John's two Apollo missions, 10 and 16, were the only two that barely got any screen-time at all.

Oh well, you can still see him talk about it in "In the Shadow of the Moon".

  • My all time favorite astronaut, just ahead of Gene Cernan. He came to West Australia after his sts1 flight and met us school kids, he's been my idol ever since.

  • Very good. UK/BBC 1982 doc on John Young ('The Ultimate Explorer') also excellent. Will try to put all or part on here asap. Great guy. (Col-at-calmaria)

  • John's cool. He's the best Navy astronaut ever in my opinion. It's difficult to see the Moon-hoax guy, Bart Sibrel, disrespecting the astronauts with questions and the Bible thing - see 'Sibrel' or 'moonmovie'.

  • John Young had "The Right Stuff". He set several altitude records in the F-4 before being selected by NASA.

  • Yes, he may be NASA's most competent astronaut ever.

  • Good, something we agree upon.

  • Yeah. That Sibrel character has really made a fool of himself harassing the astronauts like he has. You have probably checked out his encounters with Aldrin, Armstrong, Collins, and Cernan and the others. I like the way most of them handled the guy.

  • Nah... I think they ALL shoulda took a poke at that dumbass. Luved how Buzz "Light Beer" Rung his Bell.

  • Was the trumpet music a start a tribute to Chris Kraft's ears? :)

  • great stuff i want to see pete conrad

  • He was the only astronaut to fly 1st missions (Gemini / Shuttle. nice to see an acqaintance of mine John Grunsfeld on the video, he left operations to become NASA Chief Scientist in Washington but wasnt happy and moved back to Texas soon after. God Speed to both !!

  • Only 3 astronauts did the journey to moon two times ! And Young was one of them... Wooow...

  • An awesome video about an awesome astronaut...a true American Hero!
