Performances are then either blended (as the studio engineer said in WH's case) or completely lipped. It is because of feedback into the mikes from audience noise which interferes with the singer's ability to hear the music from the orchestra. If the SSB is acapella, like Christina Aguilerra's, it can be done live, but hers was famously out of tune. She should have lipped.
