  • It's almost impossible to duplicate these voices...I love Johnny Hartman,,,,I'm on my way to listen to him with John Coltrane and McCoy Tyner

  • Sammy did everything. Wasn't he a champion quick draw artist?

  • I liked it before listening to it, Just a feeling i guess

  • I did not know Sammy Dave played vibes

  • ditto

  • samy davis on the vibeS!?

  • I knew Sammy played he vibes because I saw that show live! lol

  • I think it is a good thing to let you all know that the Lon Dorsey Band (Rosco) in the tradition of Lou Rawls is at this very moment preparing to launch in the Dallas, Tx area... and it's hot. Lon Dorsey with Harry-James Bright on piano, have put together such a winning combination, with excellent side men that the press is already gossiping over the one nicknamed "Rosco" who looks and sounds just like Lou Rawls. It is scarey! Check entertainment guides for Lon Dorsey or Rosco does Lou Rawls!

  • This great performer never got the recognition he deserved and died much too early.Love these lyrics(and scratch my back myself!) and this interpretation. Thanks for this post

  • What a wonderful vocalist! Never really got his due. His voice is pure magic. Almost doesn't sound real. Folk just ain't supposed to sing like that. And what about Sammy Davis on the Vibes!! Real talent! No auto tune, just pure beautiful talent. If you didn't know what magic was before, you know now!

  • Damn who knew Sammy D could play the vibes like that

  • @winpointmedia I keep playing this over and over again

  • Doesn't get cooler or more beautifully smoother than these guys. What a national treasure Mr. Davis & Mr. Hartman were. Missing them terribly today. Bless you for posting this. Music that hits the heart & soul like this NEVER goes out of style.

  • whats the song being played at the begining...? thank you in advance!

  • Sammy's BAD on those vibes! DamN!!!

  • Lovely! TY

  • Sammy Davis sounds fairly convincing on vibes.

  • Seriously Johnny Hartman .....what a voice. Never heard anything like it xx

  • Does anyone have a year on this?

  • @TheDelge According to the NBC Masterbooks it was taped on 2/13/66 and broadcast on 3/4/66 as part of the "Sammy Davis Jr. Show."

  • what show is this?

  • Noone can make me melt like Johnny Hartman, I worship his greatness!

  • The best, Hartman is the best!

    power to the blck people!

    peace.

  • This man was marinated chivalry and charm...its just oozed out of him thick and sweet.

  • an artist who was not given enough recognition. love his interpretation of everything he sings. ROSELLI

  • "Pure Jazzy Music Heaven"

  • Awesome intro by sammy davis jr! And the voice of johnny so flawless!

  • um, pardon me, i dont have the best eyesight, but is that Sammy Davis Jr. playing vibes? WTF?

  • Btw, he is the ONLY person that Coltrane allowed to sing on one of his records. Johnny recorded mainly overseas, primarily in Canada & Australia. If you want to find one of his best records, get your hands on I Just Stopped By To Say Hello.

  • I might be repeating something that someone else has already posted since I haven't read all the comments yet, but if you like this slice of Mr. Hartman, treat yourself to the recordings he did with John Coltrane. Some of Coltrane's most beautiful playing AND Johnny Hartman!

  • @arneal Amen! Preach on! That album is on of my Top 10 if stuck on a deserted island. Powerful and beautiful that album is. Truly a beautiful shot from the hearts of two HUGELY talented musicians. We need more music like this today. Ahout out to Sammy Davis Jr as well. Is there anything that guy can't do? What a amazing talented man he was. Missing them all terribly tonight. Rock on guys! Job well done.

  • god, he makes it look so easy...

  • OMG!!!!

That's Sammy Davis, Jr.- playing the xylophone - too cold!

  • YESSS!! DEAR LORD!

  • Do you hear how good Mr. Hartman was/is? I love Frank, but racism kept this man from the forfront. Again, shame on white folks for their dishonesty. What wrong with y'all?!

  • @josephortizgarcia

Johnny was the best. Ironically, though, it wasn't racism that kept him from being mainstream. Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis, Miles, Coltrane, etc were all successful black musicians. Now, this is a almost a secret amongst musicians, but the truth about Johnny Hartman's lack of mainstream success was that he was a homosexual. And its truly a tragedy that he isn't universally recognized as he deserves to be.

  • @mharbaugh Where do you get your information about Hartman being gay? You should tell that to his daughter Lori who is a good Jazz singer herself. Perhaps you are confusing him with openly gay Billy Strayhorn, the composer of "Lush Life" made famous by Hartman. Strayhorn, although gay, was the right hand man of the Ellington band and Ellington. Before anyone posts something so personal about anyone, they should thoroughly check their information or not post it at all.

  • Sammy's got skills.

  • WHOA this man was one incredible talent. How is it I've only just heard of him?! I love his baritone voice singing these standards.

  • Ultimate cream of the crop!!!

  • Just how talentedcan one man be? Sammy you 'are a total legend!

  • Sam can do it all! Johnny sings those ballads - great! Loved it! Thanks..

  • Class.

  • Cool Sammy....on the vibes. Johnny Hartman awesome vocals. Required listening, kids~!

  • Hartman has my heart forever. No other man sang these standards with as much unpretentious ardor and grace. He renovates a ballad, delivering with an unmatched masculine tenderness, wrapping his marvelous voice around the lyrics and releasing them with an intimacy of intense heat that never scorches but only soothes. This performance exemplifies his mastery of the idiom and the time-defying integrity of his art.

  • Could not have been said better! Bravo!

  • @direfranchement Hi. I'm afraid I just found out about Johnny Hartman only tonight. His voice is so wonderful I just can't say the words. I am just literally blown away. Where the heck have I been!

  • @direfranchement

    Amen!

    Top class... absolutely..!

My CD player's laser must be in its last minutes, I hear his CDs so much, hehe..!

  • @direfranchement ''Unpretentious''.. you could learn some lessons from him with the way you write, then!

  • this was simply a treat from heaven. i never knew sammy davis jr. was so talented, and johnny hartman what a voice. god bless you for posting this.

  • Smooth, subtle, wonderfully nuanced vocal..... he might be the greatest of them all.

  • ...like a coooool breeze on hot day....ahh,what a VOICE...

  • I loved Johnny Hartman since I was a teenager. I met him when his appearance at a hotel in Miami in 1980 was cancelled because there was a fire in the club the day of his appearance. He came down to give me his autograph. What a lovely man and what a great talent.

  • Man...lucky you....lucky you.I would of have loved to meet him. With a voice and sex appeal such as his..I wouldn't of wanted to have let that meeting go.

  • Two of my favorite people. Sammy Davis and Johnny Hartman.

  • So special to see Sammy and Johnny...Mr. Hartman, a gentle genius...so touched by his tones, his performance plus all the lovely comments fans have left here. Blessings to all from your friends at FOREVER 5th DIMENSION.

  • I love this man's voice probably more than any other. My favorite singer quite possibly.

  • right!!

  • So Refined Singing

  • A great voice and a singer's singer. Ella, Sammy, and Sarah praised his talent! Unfortunatley, he never got the recognition he should have!

  • I wonder who wrote the chart for this--not as good as Nelson Riddle's chart (of the same song) for Rosemary Clooney ("Love" album). but an OK chart.

  • "The Judge" playing bass. Milt Hinton.

  • I have loved Johnny Hartman for over 30 years. I saw him in a very small club in Philadelphia as an older singer--actually the small size of the club was an insult to a singer of his enormous talent. But, he personally greeted and met all of his fans. Until now, I had never seen a video of him quite so young. Thank you so much.

  • I like all great musicians but I have a special spot for those who were or are underappreciated. Johnny Hartman was great and underappreciated.

  • A gr8 Classic video of pure legends!!

  • how great is sammy!

  • Wow wow wow! Sammy and Johnny and the whole thing is just amazing!

  • One of the Best Ballary Singers ever said sammy and i agree

  • I watch this at least once a week. Johnny Hartman is a legend and Sam is Iconic. I wanna sign like this!!

  • Johnny has been a household name for me for at least 20 years now. One of the best smoothes baritone singers.

  • This man's voice brings me to tears. What pure emotion..what sophistication. He should be a household name.

  • Absolutely fabulous!

  • sammy did everything

  • wow i didnt know sammy D played vibes! awesome

  • I have watched this too many times and I never grow Tired of it! This man had great control of his voice which is what makes him sound Brilliant! Style and a voice, I have bought all available music in the last 2 weeks....We long for good music today

  • Ache' What a voice

  • INcreible uno d mis cantante favoritos, el disco que grabaron junto a Coltrane es una maravilla.

  • I am ashamed to say I had not heard of Johnny Hartman before finding this. His voice is just fabulous and I will be trying to find his album with John Coltrane to buy very soon

  • That one is a classic! His others are good as well.

  • I only found out about Johnny Hartman a few days ago when I opened a random mp3 on my computer that my brother had downloaded. He's now my favourite singer.

  • He was a musician's singer, no crowd-pleasing Nat King Cole or Billy Eckstein. If not for Clint Eastwood and 'Trane, would any of us know him? Enjoy.

  • what a beautiful voice! and how beautifully he sings.

  • His album with John Coltrane should be required listening for every human being - easily one of the greatest albums of all time; if you've never heard it get it - includes this classic, and Lush Life - I've played his stuff a thousand times, and I never get tired of it...

  • @juvserr -I fully agree.

  • @juvserr I agree.....I have been into Coltrane since the late 60's when I heard them at my friends grandmother's house...and I've never been the same about music....they introduced me to the classics.

  • while commenting on another post,I was reminded of Johnny. I had almost forgotten how great he was. As another singer once said,"It's All Coming Back To Me Now" I won't forget again !

  • aahhhhhhHHHH!

    Sheer PERFECTION! :-)

  • My favorite Rodgers & Hart tune, sung by my very favorite singer. Nothing better.

  • Hartman & Davis - two greats together on one track - what a treat!

  • Hartman is pure class and the fact that he was not big show-biz star makes him even more interesting in my eyes.

  • Holy cow, I knew Sammy was a multi-talent, but I had NO IDEA he could play vibes as well. Insane. That aside, I've always loved Johnny Hartman, but I'd never seen footage of him, so thanks for this.

  • You wouldn't call Sinatra the Black Johnny Hartman,so I would except the same respect for this great great singer.Even though I know you didn't mean any thing by it.

  • Bah! Hartman beats Sinatra in my humble opinion. Substantially more emotive singer, no inflated head and ego, and much better character. Hartman's the romantic, Sinatra the playboy.

  • que groso

  • how bout sammy!

  • Ahh, the voice! Thank you for posting this!

  • When Johnny Hartman was on, lights went out all over Manhattan.

  • WOW, what a masterpiece of great musical talent. Unexpected surprise to see Sammy, the world and I did not know the depth of his gifts. Learned of Johnny from college days at Tenn.State, wows me each time I hear the richness of his voice and his timing impeccable!

  • He was the black David Allyn.

  • The greatest of all was hartman! The black crooner

  • He was the black sinatra! What a voice and who's buble compared to johnny? A clown

  • I only discovered Johnny Hartman a few years ago. What a voice! There's no words to describe Sammy Davis Jr. Thanks for posting.

  • Sammy was the MAN! The sixties were so cool. And Johnny Hartman - I think I have everything he ever recorded - that butterscotch baritone voice. Man, I'ma go and mix me a martini, put on my velvet slippers, and crank him up on the old Marantz.

  • This is sweet. Johnny is too cool. Thanks for posting this great video.

  • Was there anything Sammy Davis Jr. couldn't do or play? What a great introduction to this video! And Johnny Hartman's voice and performance - a real gem! Thanks for posting.

  • No better ballad singer ever than Johnny Hartman. Gone way too early and never appreciated except by those that know great music and how talented he was.

  • I'm having real Internet problems. According to this message I got this never got onto YouTube. Go figure

  • AAAAAAAAAAW HIS FANS THANK YOU!!!
