My father served in WW2---part of the American forces that fought the Afrika Korps in No. Africa in '42 and '43 and was part of the battle for Anzio in '44. He passed over 20 yrs ago. But I wonder sometimes if he were alive today (and this applies to all WW2 vets), would he have second thoughts about going up agst Nazi Germany as they look at all they sacrificed to win a war and to have the world in the condition it is today?

I'm american and taught in our public schools in both city and suburban areas. that said, these hitler youth have it all over america's kids today. i would go back to teaching if i had kids like this that are self determined, disciplined, smart, selfless, and squared away. I could think of many other positive things to say but i run out of my 500 word limit. LOL!

I saw in a documentary that Theey used Hotler youth when their number of solduers dwindled, and that the Youth were some of the best fighters. Why do you think this is? Soldiers (i.e. cannon fodder) in the making. Still, you can't help but stand back and be swept away by the emotion. I can see why such an enlightened nation like Germany allowed itself to be entranced by these criminal lunatics. They unified a disillusioned and embittered nation, rallied it under one concept, silenced its critics with massive economic and infrastructural growth, and then unleashed its pride and post-WW1 prejudices upon a weak and battered Europe.

@raysalsa1 i know you said this a long while ago and you've probably surpassed puberty since then, but the russian winter didn't discriminate between german and soviet troops, it came down strongly against both forces but the waffen s.s. did not, despite the bold claims, have the endurance to withstand frostbite

@xtrmsprts the waffen ss didn't make their own winter clothing. you think maybe they need to be supplied better to endure the winter campaign? the russians as a whole the proper gear for their soldiers. germany was spread way to thin. i mean the same thing was happening to rommel in north africa. greatest soldiers in the world still need supplies once in a while. the waffen SS were by far the most elite fighters at that time from any country.

The S.S. were exemplary for their Bloodlust and utter absence of decency, I'll give you that. But that doesn't translate into a good soldier. Remember an angry athlete is apt to make stupid mistakes.so was with the bunglers of the SS. They had animal passion but not the acumen (or supplies,as you pointed out) for warfare. Hence, they are losers. QED.

@xtrmsprts absence of decency? it's war, not some encounter group on a weekday evening. if the SS had the supplies and proper winter gear, they would have achieved victory. they did lose, but they fought to the last man. if they were to be taken prisoner they surely would been killed by any allied forces. im american and have alot of respect for waffen SS fighting spirit and much of their army. germany forced the USA to wake up and become our greatest generation.
