I was a little kid in the mid 60's, and heard the Beatles; Dylan's electric stuff with The Band, Buffalo Springfield, The Byrds, and Neil Young all the time. When Petty came out, his sound was instantly familiar, and also very fresh. I've always loved that jangly, slightly pissed off 60s thing,and ol' Tom nails it to the wall. You can hear his influences, but he's not a clone living in the past. He is Tom Petty, and his tunes rock righteously, with balls and soul!!!

Petty sings of an Indiana girl from and Indiana town, and the fact that he mentions Market Square, which is in downtown Indianapolis, and many bands played at Market Square Arena in the 80's and 90's before they tore it down. I know of this because I was one of those 'Indiana boys,' hangin' out on those "Indiana nights,' in a small town.

Well I got 'tired of (that) town,' and now I live in Ohio. Just wondering if Petty might have been in town for a concert, and wrote this in his hotel room.

@theokap23 I know sometimes it's hard to hear the words but listen close and you'll hear she said. Also the song makes better sense with she said. The song is in my opinion one of Petty's best. I've always thought Mary Jane and American Girl were his top 2 songs. Oh my my, Oh hell yes, Honey put on that party dress. Buy me a drink, sing me a song take me as I am cause I can't stay long... Those lines may not make it to the top in a literary sense but man they sure sound cool in this song.

So nostalgic! I'm 25 now but i remember riding around with my dad in his old ford pickup listening to this and countless other classic rock songs. This one stands out because at the time (i was 5) I remember hearing the ghost story of Mary Jane the hitchhiker, and that was all I could think about especially riding around those lonesome country dirt roads at night!!
