Ambroulard has a point, but I'd rather say it's not the touch that is lacking, but the looseness and the sense of groove that Jon has when he plays this very same pattern. My advice is work on that and both you and your playing will benefit from it! Good ears, figuring it all out! :)

Well Bedlahm is a completely different album from De-loused, Frances, and ampu, so its hard to really judge who sounds better because its 2 completely different phases of the band, Omar being the main culprit. He writes practically everything, and he tells pridgen how to play, so its Omars fault, not thomas's. Besides, I think Thomas's style fit the last 2 albums perfectly. jon's style wouldn't have fit as well, but its not the drummer's faults. the style would have been the same with either

@tcslick420 how can omar tell pridgen what to play when he cant even read or write music, its not feasible that he wrote all his parts like a Frank Zappa. He could only have presented the music and given loose guidance. A drummer will stamp his identity on a band, hence the MV will never be the same again post Theodore. Theres no way Jon would have played pridgens parts either.

pridgen is an amazing drummer and prob better technically than theodore but jon just flowed so much better with the sound of TMV Pridgen sounds like hes playing in the fucking GC drum off every time he plays a song. Just because you CAN play insane single stroke rolls doesn't mean you should on every track..

tmv suffered greatly when they lost jon theodore. thomas is talented but sounds like shit with the mars volta.. a horrible mismatch. now the mars volta have become everything they used to make fun of. comfortably rich mega rock stars with more money than passion. they get worse and worse with every new album. some of omars solo albums are cool though.

Jon is a great drummer who plays with his entire soul don't but I can't ever focus on his drumming it's just so in the background and also the way his kit sounded always just sounded really forgettable

Think of the kinds of fills chad Smith does, for example at the end the chours of 'Funky Monks' where it goes '...I got a feeling for you' they are double paradiddles/para triplets.
