Never operate outside of the Load Chart. Read and understand the Lifting Notes, and the Working Area Chart. Never allow a foreman to talk you into operating unsafely. The excuse given by the operator, I didn't put out the outriggers because it would have blocked the traffic lane is sad, Never Swing A Boom Into An Open Traffic Lane! Safety First guys.
You are right, he was working without the stabilizers down. The load Chart tells you not to operate the crane without them down on a firm supporting surface. My point was the Load chart will provide the information needed to safely operate the crane. Ya just have to read it first.
First of the the "crane" in which all you people are referring to is not a crane. It's a BOOM TRUCK. And you people talking about safety. The crawler crane making the recovery is using his whipline( 1 part)i'm sure he went past the line pull of 13,900lbs.
fortstjohn1984, i have to agree with you. that was pretty stupid of them using the whip line. I also think it looks like a single part setup. They should have at least used a 5 part or 7 part setup.I work on maintenance for truck cranes. Where I work we just got a Grove 4090 and a Grove 6220 truck crane. Good stuff.
jesus christ 5-7 parts.way to damn slow.a single or 2 part would be just fine.on the crane being you and i work on them you would know if it was too much weight the crane would have shut down.all the new shit (2006 and up) has it.
not really.you dont need a full 16000 pound pull on the line to right the crane.and yes i just corrected you.the link-belt in question uses cable that will with stand a 20000 pound load.
A few years ago, two parents went out for dinner. A few hours later, the babysitter was calling to ask if she could cover up the clown statue in the kids' room, the father said,"Take the kids and get out of the house. We'll call the police, we don't have a clown statue." The "clown statue" is really a killer that escaped from jail. If you don't post this letter on to 10 videos tonight, the clown will be in your bed at 3:00 am with a chainsaw in his hand(SORRY BOUT SPAM THIS REALLY FREAKS ME)
The crane that righted the other was a Mantis. They also had a Dozer with a cable on the boom so the it would not swing when picked up. They had a dozer with a rope across the truck on the opposites side of the boom to help set it up. I heard the operator was told not to block the road. Thats why he did not extend the outriggers. He was not going to pick anything only to work on the end of the boom.
They should have known that, barring Hyd. hose failure, the boom cannot swing on it's own. Only conventional crane booms can freely swing if the swing brake is not applied.
Even if a hyd hose did fail the cylinders shouldn't bleed down because the cylinder used for the past 30 years have had lockout valves. The valves require the same amount of pressure going into the cylinder that is already in the cylinder to release the valves. I hope that makes sense.
@linhand Looked like a blowhard pony show. Ropes? Us Yanks like the round slings cause they are safer for the "blokes" working on deck. We'd do things with the same results and keep the crew safer. Go for a pint while we we get the job done and keep the crew safe. Yeah it's a poke.
The rig that righted the truck crane was a Mantis? Help me out guys. And I agree with the outrigger theory but would never partialy extend any outrigger beam. They either go all the way out or I don't make the pick. I do agree with the swing brake theory. But don't those rigs have a positive pin lock in addition to a friction lock?
That machine does not come with a counterweight..... as well, before we start calling people idiots.. how do we know he wasnt just repositioning the crane with the boom up over the front and the swing brake let go?
Even if the swing brake let go. Every operator worth a damn knows that you position your boom over your rest and then you lower it. You always keep it elevated for proper weight distribution. That keeps accidents like this from happening and plus the outriggers go out first and come in last. No questions asked. I've worked with some of the biggest offshore cranes in the world. 6P's will keep you alive and working.
Outriggers were down but not extended. The operator miss read the load chart. He thought it had the counter weight witch would allow that kind of setup. No one was hurt. But the crane is not cheap.
That thing cost $300,000 at least and they let some idiot operate it. Notice no outriggers. If the boom comes out of the saddle put the outriggers down.
silly crane driver you can't lift the earth up, I thought that would be lesson #1 at crane driving school.

I am surprised that a boom truck that new wouldn't have a outrigger lockout. If no pressure on outriggers than the boom would not raise.

it wouldn't take much to stand it back up. it didn't take much to tip it over either.. when you go outside of your chart you are stupid.
i bet the mantis only had to lift maybe 3-7000 Lbs on the boom for the weight of the truck to stand itself back up...

I agree ive seen trucks with my company further over than that and pushed them back up with their own boom

The outriggers on the boomtruck were not extended. That's just plain stupid.

Whip line is fine if you lift from the end of the boom truck.

Outriggers ALWAYS go out no matter what the chart says only exception is if you dont have the room otherwise this is what can happen
