  • :13-:17 Awesome.

  • Damn, that is tasty

  • this needs more views. this guy is beast

  • Tell your friends to stop by, then! Thanks for the compliment, my man. :D

  • loving those lazy arms ... just how u supposed to drum in jazz, the lazy arm, yet so fast ..

  • Thanks, man! It's funny you should say that: I was watching a video of Antonio Sanchez (search for his name and "One For Antonio" here on YouTube) today, and was thinking the EXACT same thing: set the kit up right, and make as little movement as possible - keep everything ergonomic and within easy reach, and you'll be smokin' fast around the kit like Antonio. Wish I was as fast as that cat - I got LOTS of work to do. ;)

  • @drumology2001 wow, Antonio's insanely good, after like 4min I remembered he was also stomping on the hihat .. thanks for the share .. you're good to mate !

  • @RaggaDnB yeah, that's remarkable: ) and i think it's better to get used to keeping the hihat always going along, so one can keep better track of the rythm..

  • @RaggaDnB

practicing real light and fast on the pad develops a lot of finger control.

  • That drumset sounds really nice. I wish when I worked for Priness Cruise Lines, they would have had a set like that...I think they had a Yamaha beginner or something...And the bass pedal was broken.

  • HA! Funny! This is a Yamaha Stage Custom Standard...it doesn't get more "beginner" than this kit! It was all I could afford when I bought my first drum set, and I love Yamaha's stuff so much that I HAD to buy it.

Surprised to hear that a cruise line would have anything less than the best gear, for how much money they usually dump into production values and such. That's interesting.

  • @drumology2001 YOU ARE JOKING! That is a great sound. No, I only get to use the GOOD drumset when I play in the Orchestra. When I do rock night, and island night, they give me something made of paper, and old tape.

I use to be the department lead in the MuscDep, and I saw the sound budget. $120,000 per year for SOUND per SHIP. For INSTRUMENTS it was $10,000 per year per ship.

  • "...made of paper and old tape." HA! I lol'd. ;)

So, they have $10K to spend on instruments, and they can't take $850 a buy a mid-level Yamaha kit for each ship? Where is the other $9K a year going? :0

  • @drumology2001 the other $9k goes towards either a new stand up bass for the jazz band, or it goes toward 50% of a breast implant for one of the dancers. haha. Ships are awesome to work on, but they just need to learn to budget! Bastards...

Man, everytime I comment back here, and hear the video playing, it makes me wants to jazz tune my kit. (To bad my kit is in the USA and I am in Brazil now)

  • Well, come on back to the US of A then, my friend! Why are you two separated? What's keeping you in Brazil?

  • @drumology2001 Haha, well, I met an amazing Brazilian girl working on the ships. So, I married her, and moved to Brazil with her! She is more important than my drumkit. However, there is a drum club (1 of 100000s here) Were I pay like 20USD per week, and can play drums for 2 hours per day. It is not so bad! Awesome drumming going on here, big groups on the beach sometimes. It's really cool. I am in Santos, SP State. Check it out on my channel, you can see the beach here- Guaruja

  • nice drum set! your solo sounds really good. It's very well played and you kept time very well. Great job!

  • Thanks! I just sold that kit a few months ago, too, since it was just sitting in my basement. I hope somebody else is enjoying it like I did. :D

  • Nice build up in the solo, relaxed hands! good timing. And you made the band feel confortable leading them right to the top ov the head. Great work Derek!

  • wow

i just saw some of your videos and i'm inspired

    keep it up =D

  • Thanks! Glad to hear you're enjoying them! :D

  • Thanks for the props! Though Coltrane's arrangement of this song is very popular, it was actually written by Mongo Santamaria. It's one of my favorites to play. If you haven't seen it yet, I have another take on this song done with my trio; search "Frazer Wambeke" above and you'll find a whole other set of videos there.

Can you tell me the date of your last e-mail? I switched over to Gmail recently and it groups messages together funky, so I'm having a hard time finding it... =\

  • Great sound, great feel, great chops, great musician!

  • Great scott! :D

    Thanks for the love. ;)

  • his toms sound great. what kind of heads r they?

  • Thanks for the compliment and question. ;)

The snare is a Remo Fiberskyn3 batter side, Clear Ambassador resonant side. Toms are Remo Coated Ambassadors batter side, Clear Ambassadors resonant side. Bass drum is a Remo Powerstroke3 batter side, and a default Yamaha logo head resonant side.

  • I couldn't learn something like this but I really wish i knew how to play the rythmic beat at 1:20 - 1:30 and do you have two floor toms there?

  • Yes, there are two floor toms: a 14" and a 16" one. And the groove is pretty simple: just a triplet-based thing. I'm sure you could learn this - it's really basic when you break it down.

  • sounds like you were having loads of fun. Great stuff!! :-)

  • your kit sounds amazing!

  • A'thank you. I don't think the audio quality is really clear enough to warrant that comment, but I appreciate it nonetheless. :)

  • No Space...

  • (See my comment below from 7 months ago.)

  • It's a great cymbal. Unfortunately, I was in a bus accident on July 4th, and most all of my drum equipment was destroyed (as far as I know). Hopefully I can find a replacement if some insurance money comes my way.

  • Is it just me or does that sound a little like whole lotta love in the beginning of the video

  • The original tune is faster, but it's still great here...

  • Woow Super!

  • Thanks! Now that I watch it back, though, I think I was probably far too "busy" on this. I could have played half as many notes and got a better result, most likely.

  • great job man

  • Very nice solo, nice changes and keeping in style. What kind of cymbal is the one on the far right side of you kit?

  • The one on the FAR right is an 18" Wuhan China, if you're looking for the source of the "white noise" sort of crashes. Since that one isn't very visible, you might be talking about the one higher up and to it's left, which is an Istanbul 19" Mehmet Legend Crash/Ride. Figured I'd tell you both just in case. ;)

  • Thanks - yes it's the Mehmet Legend Crash/Ride I wanted to know about. I'm familiar with the Wuhans and that's not what I was interested in. Another drummer who uses similar white noise cymbals to great effect is Billy Kilson - particular on Taylor Eigsti's "Lucky to Be Me" CD. I posted on Billy's web site to find out what that cymbal was but guess he's busy. No reply. Anywho - I was surprised to come across that sound I was seeking via your solo! Thanks for the tip!

  • Sure thing! I know the Kilson situation; I've gotten to hang with him a few times over the past few years (and learned a lot). He is notoriously hard to get a hold of by his own admission; he often doesn't answer his web stuff (MySpace included) because his manager/agent handles all the communications. Kind of a bummer, really.

  • the istanbul stuff is great. i think the legend mehmet line is like the old mel lewis line, but im not sure. i have a 17" sultan pre-split stanbul crash ride with rivets. it sounds great, but i wish i could play it like this. amazing man!!!!

  • wow great great cymbals and you play nice too my brother

  • Contrary to the previous post, I think you perfectly use the spirit of the song. I really like the way you focus on your sound. For me, it's a very good drum solo. Can I ask you what's your drum set ?

  • Don't worry about the previous post; everybody's a critic and a "Monday-morning soloist"...and that's exactly why I put videos on here: to get feedback from my peers.

To answer your question: the kit is a Yamaha Stage Custom. On toms, Coated A's batter side, Clear A's resonant. On BD, Powerstroke 3 batter, Yamaha logo resonant. Snare is 5x14 Yamaha Steel with Fiberskyn3 batter, Clear A resonant. It's not the top of Yamaha's line, but if tuned right, they work great and are very affordable.

  • Thanks for the answer. I took the liberty to visit your website. Very cool, man ! Keep on swinging. Best regards

  • hey bro, you've obviously got some monster chops and talent, but your solo had nothing whatsoever to do with the tune and had no latin feel at all except for the two seconds of cowbell action.

i'd love to hear you play some short phrases, modulate a bit. this sort of "how many notes can i play" and "look ma, i'm crossing my sticks over!" thing is not soulful and doesn't add to the music. sounded great on the head.

  • Thank you for the constructive criticism! I enjoy hearing other people's views. As this was a solo, I wasn't really trying to define the style so much, but I fully understand your take on it. As nobody's clip on YouTube is ever their "best work", I won't claim this to be mine, either. ;) I would be interested to hear your take on my 'Ticket to Wahkeena' solo clip...can you take a look? Thanks!

  • you are really good, i like the other vid you have up, great grooves!

  • Thanks for the comment! Be sure to check all the videos out by going to my YouTube channel page, and there are even more on my website if you like. More on the way!

  • you are very good

  • Thank you very much. I appreciate the kind words. ;)

  • Thank you! Not my best work, but thought I'd put a few things up on here. You can't see it, but I'm doing a bunch of cross-overs at the :58 mark. Bum camera angle...sorry. ;)

  • nice solo i like it
