I live in Alaska, and have a freezer full of salmon and halibut.I won't be going to the store today so I will be seafood medley less. Got some sockeye salmon thawed out in the fridge right now and was wondering which way I was going to prepare it. Now I know! Thanks for the idea and recipe! Will let you know how it turns out.
I lived in Cooper Landing, Alaska for a summer and fall and fish is one of the things I miss most about the place (and the view). I shared a residence with a fishing guide and he was always bringing home pounds of fresh salmon (and he had a freezer full of halibut, too). I ate like a king when I lived up there (still sorta do--but I haven't had as good a salmon since I left)
@FromUnderTheRock LOL I don't know how it happened but my salmon comment was supposed to be on your seafood pancake vid! LOL I'm not so sure about salmon hummus! Maybe smoked salmon might work in it! LOL Maybe we're on to something!!LOL
Buck, you are an inspiration. I first tasted hummus in the 70s and made my own until the last few years. It is easy to make, and like you, I am a big garlic fan. My favorite hummus accompaniement is pickled turnips. They are pink, crisp, cool and tart - perfect contrast to creamy, garlic hummus. Real winner. Thank you.
Camera Girl and I did a year of vegetarianism where we almost turned into two tubs of hummus, until one day we were saved (or doomed) by two hamburgers. and I love love love turnips!--especially turnip puree--but pickled? I think I've had pickled turnips out and about on the town, but only in passing...I'll pay more attention next time.
You just made Valentines day better for me. My camera girl loves hummus! Having said that I need to know how to whip up some pita from scratch! Muchos Gracias!
Out of everything the Tahini was the most expensive $6.99 for the cheapest jar at the store. Made this tonight and my wife and I at the whole thing, I am glad I got two cans of beans I can make more later. One jar of Tahini should last me a few years at least at two tablespoons a pop hahaha. great recipe, I am so stuffed with bread, and hummus right now I can barely move LOL.
that's not a bad price for tahini...where I live, you can pay between $6 and $8 for a 16oz jar depending on the brand and where you shop--but it's a good buy even at $8; it doesn't take much tahini to add flavor to a dish and a jar will last quite a while. I try to avoid the pita bread around hummus because I do not pita responsibly :^(
most grocery stores have it in the ethnic foods section, usually closer to the Asian than the Latino--I don't know about in Oxford, though. I lived in Auburn for about a year and food-wise what I remember most are chicken fingers. My local Walmart has tahini, so if you've got one of those nearby, you might find it there. Surprisingly, the best price in my area is at a local organic-type grocery where the prices are usually sky high.
@FromUnderTheRock Thanks for your respose.I watched Heatherzblueyez1975 a few mins ago and she had a video on homemade tahani paste. We have alot of good chicken finger places around here.
tahini is sesame seeds ground into a paste...it resembles peanut butter in texture and appearance; it's essential for making hummus, but I also use tahini as an ingredient in making sauces for asian-style dishes.
I did the dried bean thing once and never went back...I like your idea that spontaneity and prepping the day before don't jibe, but for me, it's probably laziness that gets in the way more than anything else (although I do prefer the canned garbanzos for hummus--the bean "skins" seem less prevalent)
chives are delicioso! and I love hummus packed with green onions and hot peppers, too--although Camera Girl made me stop with the hot peppers; she frowns on the 3 garlic cloves, as well, but somethings can't be helped.
luckily, hummus is easy to live without...hopefully you do better with chocolate and nuts (being allergic to nuts sounds like the biggest pain in the butt!)
O, BOY IT IS GOOD AND YOU RIGHT DO NOT BUY IT MAKE IT--I ADD HALF AVOCADO TOO..LOVE IT --YES MAKE IT AT HOME...LOVE,LOVE ANY KIND OF BEANS..

Great stuff, thanks for the reminder-
haven't made any since last Spring or Summer.
I actually prefer using reconstituted dried Kichererbsen
(what we call garbanzos over here) for the texture.
But each to his own. And it is hard to be spontaneous
using the dried stuff.... Some hummus, olives,
a chunk of pita bread..., wah lah, one happy Airave.

I'll have to ask Cletus down at the county market where they keep the tahini... He'll probably say just buy the damned hummus like everyone else.

it's probably between the pork skins and lighter fluid, but check the expiration date before you buy.

I'll save my: How much patchouli should I be wearing? question for when you do a bulgar and amaranth salad...
Have you got a little hippy in you? Would you like some?

a little hippy? I'm like 85% hippy (I won't claim more than that since I live a bulgar-free lifestyle...at least for the moment)
