I make polymer clay creations. I was wondering if I use the realistic water, would it effect the polymer clay at all? Like the paint I use on it or the clay itself, will it bleed? I wanted to make a little girl playing in a pond, and maybe have a dog sitting in a tub. Maybe fill a tub thats 2ins tall and wide. Will that take long to dry?
@butt3rflykiss3s69 - Realistic Water will eat away at Polymer clay. If you seal the clay figure really well with a high-quality 100% acrylic paint, it may be okay. But, we have never tested this application & we do not know if there are any long term effects on a Polymer clay figure setting in RW for an extended period of time. We do not recommend the two be used together. If you do decide to use Realistic Water, we recommend it be poured no thicker than ½” overall.
Two questions with the realistic water product - 1. I've tried using it (in thin layers) to fill up my water tank models but it seems to keep evaporating (i.e. the 'water' level keeps decreasing, but it's not leaking out anywhere).
2. On another layout I've got a river that extends to the edge, where I need it to be about half an inch thick; how do I stop the RW from dribbling out? Should I build a clear wall with PVA or Water Effects? Perspex isn't an option in this case.
@Steamtostay - 1. Realistic Water can evaporate up to 50%. It is a slow process to fill something deep & RW should be poured no deeper than ½”. Neither PVA glue nor Water Effects are recommended to create a barrier for Realistic Water. If your water feature extends to the diorama edge, use clear acetate/styrene to make a damn, or make a ½” thick barrier/ bank with Plaster Cloth sealed with Flex Paste and then landscape. For a low (1/4”) barrier use Scenic Glue or Low Temp Hot Glue.
@Steamtostay - Since we don't make PVA glue, we don't know its formula. Our Scenic Glue formula is proprietary information. If your question concerns using one vs. the other with Realistic Water, the answer is that we design our products to be used together. We have not tested Realistic Water with PVA glue and do not know the results. The PVA glue could cause an adverse reaction with the Realistic Water, and we do not recommend using the two together. Hope this helps!
Hi there, I'm wondering what product do you use for the grass (base grass) as seen here? I dont understand the turfs and grass, are static grass used?
@Coffee4am - the base is our Spring Grass color ReadyGrass Vinyl Mat with the turf scraped off to form the outline of the water features prior to painting them. If you are referring to the taller dry grass, that is our Harvest Gold Field Grass. Other foliages used are various colors and combinations of Fine and Coarse Turfs, Underbrush and Clump-Foliage. I hope I have answered your question. Thanks!
@TheAngelBunny10 - These products should be available at your local hobby shop. If you live in an area where there are no hobby shops, you can always find them through an online supplier of model railroad products. A Google search can help you locate hobby shops in your area and/or products available online. Thanks and Happy Modeling!
@flightdeckreviews -Yes. But, the Realistic Water will adhere to the boat, so it would not be removable without damage to the model and the water feature.
@ceito17 - the base is our Spring Grass color ReadyGrass Vinyl Mat with the turf scraped off to form the outline of the water features prior to painting them. If you are referring to the taller dry grass, that is our Harvest Gold Field Grass. I hope I have answered your question. Thanks!
@roloboy97 - We recommend a water feature using Realistic Water be no deeper than ½”, poured in four 1/8" pours, and letting each layer dry THOROUGHLY (glass clear) between pours. Realistic Water is designed to dry highly reflective to create the illusion of depth. Combined with a water feature prepared and painted prior to pouring, you can create the illusion of any depth water. Remember to only use 100% acrylic paint when preparing your water feature.
@roloboy97 - We do not recommended pouring Realistic Water deeper than ½”. It must be poured in 1/8” increments, letting each layer cure until “glass clear.” Cure time for each layer could take up to 3 days, depending on heat and humidity. It is also important to not disturb or move the water feature while each layer is drying.
@eyedesign45 - For this larger of a water area, Realistic Water is the better choice. It is more flexible, so there is less likelihood it will crack. Also, EZ Water needs to be applied in one pour to avoid transition lines and this could be difficult with such a large area.
When painting the base of your water area, Realistic Water should ONLY be poured over completely dried, 100% acrylic paint. This is VERY IMPORTANT! FYI - Woodland Scenics Earth Colors® Liquid Pigments are 100% acrylic.
Dilute black paint 1:1 with water and brush onto lava flow. Paint in layers until desired color and effect is achieved. Model hot lava by dabbing on small amounts of red and yellow paint around the bottom edges of the lava flow and in various locations. Then use a wet brush to gently blend colors together. Do not create a solid orange color, let colors mix together naturally. There should be some areas of yellow, some red and some orange. Google images of 'volcano lava' for reference.
@LtTrenz - Hi...I have a response, but it's longer than the space allowed here. I sent you a friend request, so that I could send you an email. As soon as you accept it, I can send you the information.
@FamilyArth - Realistic Water is sold in 16 fl oz bottles and Water Effects is sold in 8 fl oz. Those are the only sizes in which the products are available. You can purchase them at most local hobby stores.
@shizlnit - Foam must be prepared and sealed properly, or will not work properly. We recommend covering a foam base with layers of Plaster Cloth, being careful that all holes in the cloth are filled with plaster. Further seal the area with a layer of Flex Paste™. When dry, paint the base with Earth Colors™ Liquid Pigment or other acrylic or latex paint to depict water depth. Do not use oil base paint. Let dry thoroughly. Pour Realistic Water according to package directions. Happy Modeling!
I would be interested in using your product for a 4 foot long model warship. So, first of all I would need a lot of the stuff and secondly, I would want to ask if you ship outside the United States and how much it would cost. Thanks.
@wowplayer160 - Oh absolutely! We have had several modelers send us photos of their WWII dioramas and wargaming layouts in which they have used modeled Realistic Water™ and/or Water Effects™ to model water features.
@breyernakotalover - You can build one for your horses! The products are easy to use and there is plenty of how-to help on our Web site and on YouTube from various modelers. Go for it! Happy Modeling!
