The flaw in the "millions" figure is that it was based on data from a SINGLE hospital in Berlin, and used a mathematical formula to apply abortion rates in Berlin per 100,000 to the entire population of Germany overrun by the Reds, assuming the rape rates were uniformed. Based on that alone, the figure is suspect.

Most figures put the rapes at the low 100,000's, a very high figure none the less but when compared to the 14 million Russian civilians who died under German rule, pales in comparison

Most of these formations were running not from Soviet POW camps, but from high risk of getting killed on the eastern front. In western front they had much more chance in surviving in battle. With the exception for RLA, which knew they'd be tried for treason.

There was little to no combat on the western front after Hitlers death, the men running there were running there to go into POW camps not to fight. As a soldier you did not choose what front you were to fight on. The men going west were seeking to surrender to the western allies not fight them, memoirs of many soldiers even say as much.

You also can't discount German propaganda. Also lets not forget that anger of Russian soldiers could be understandable, Germans never set foot on American soil, although Americans were very brutal to population in western europe.

No the Russians had every right to be pissed at the Germans. While I certainly do not condone what the Russians did when they entered Germany, their rage was at least justified by German atrocities committed without provocation from 1941 onwards.

That said any notion the western allies did anything comparable to the German population as the Russians did is ludicrous. There is little to no evidence of any large scale brutality by the west against Germans.

I think the Germans were wise enough to know which allies would show mercy. German atrocities in Western Europe were fairly moderate in comparison to the absolute barbarism the Germans showed to the "inferior" Slavs during Barbarossa.

The Germans could expect decent treatment from the western allies, the Russians however had every right to exact an eye for an eye, and luckily for Germany they displayed more restraint than they could have all things considered.
