awesome collaboration...robertson wrote it..Levon, Mavis for Carmen, Pops for Annabelle, Danko for crazy Chester..( love his arm movements) and Scorses and Chapman for their cinematography..notice the moons behind the musicians...it all came together so beautifully it almost hurts...
upon closer inspection....who the hell disliked this? Even if it's not your genre of music everyone should at least respect that this is the defining song of one of the most talented ensemble groups ever to make music, and then add to that the haunting soul of the Staples' voices....if you can't find something to like here you quite simply don't know music....Go back to idolizing Justin Beiber or whatever the hell you do and leave the real music to the rest of us!!
My uncle played drums with these guys back in the 60's and early 70's. Said Levon Helm was one of his heroes. I used to watch The Last Waltz with my uncle before he died. Miss you Uncle Jimmy. R.I.P.
Ever feel that you were placed in the wrong time. Oh to go back to those days where America and its music still had some soul and feeling. Bring those days back. Until then I'll just take a load off.
Of all the versions of this song IMO this is one of their best performances doing The Weight. Those Staple Singers realy broing out the soul of the song.
..damn, mavis, tear it up. i loved this concert.. somber.. the LAST waltz.. but they went out on top.. i love watching this one.. more aptly, i love watching levon helm.. not many people who can don a trucker hat, be generally odd looking, and STILL be sexy as a mother effer. rawwwwwr.
@RomMechEng: Oh, I think there's always good stuff out there to be found (sometimes it hides real good), but yeah... this is pure music from the gut. I'm too young to have been into this when it was current, but I've just really discovered The Band in the last few years and I miss them, too.
This is toooo gud! Like eating a big mac and super-sized fries with NO calories, maybe even a fudge cake afterwards, ummmmmm, This The bands last concert backed up by the Staple singers, (I'll Take you There)......
I love Levon Helms voice and his wonderful drumming .. what a band !

With all the talk about the music, it's worth noting the camerawork. Scorsese + Michael Chapman = perfection.

This performance is intense, and it is so cool how 'Pops' Staples just glides into his verse and keeps it cool and soulful.
