Janick is a more than only a great guitarist! He added to Maiden the fullness of sound which they have now, he is also a talented "frontman" (see him in the Rock In Rio concert), with his "shows" on stage gave to Maiden a way to re-invent themselves, gave his particular approach to music and his long experience as a guitarist. Plus: who are you to say that Janick is excess? The whole Iron Maiden don't think so, so please your opinion vs. the Maiden's one doesn't count for me.

I think I may disable comments on this video because the comments in support of Janick are based purely on anger and emotional attachment, rather than consideration for what is actually right for the band. Three guitarists on pre-Janick Maiden songs sounds like a big sonic fart and watching Janick throw his guitar in the air and wave 'magic hands' at it looks even worse than it sounds. I'll end this discussion with a quote from one Bruce Dickinson: 'Set fire to the f*&ker - we don't care'.
Janick sucks in Maiden. He might be good in other bands, I couldn't say. But as far as Maiden goes he is an unnecessary addition since Adrian returned. As I've stated before, they may as well have kept Blayze in the band as well, as two singers makes about much sense as three guitarists.

Twelve black hearses travel slowly down a quiet street as ominous clouds gather in the skies above. Then imagine that a pink Volkswagen Beetle appears playing ABBA tunes at full volume with fireworks shooting out of its headlights. The pink car is Janick and Maiden purists, such as myself, don't appreciate his antics wrecking the show. End of story.

He's so damn full of energy, his stage presence almost defines Maiden in the 2000's, he's an amazing guitarist, his live harmonizing solos with Adrian and Dave are unbelievably awesome, and he's clearly an incredible composer, seeing as how he wrote almost all of the guitar parts to The Legacy, among other songs.
And I think it's pretty obvious that Maiden is best with 3 guitarists. They wrote 3rd guitar parts before even having 3 guitarists.
I kind of like 3 guitarists on stage, as some song such as Remember Tomorrow, the solo parts of Sign of The Cross and POTO gets much better. But Adrian and Dave are 100 times better than Janick, and I think that they should do the solos, and he the under-solo riffs. He's too sloppy, and he spends 50% of the time on getting tangled into the cables. Also, the into to 2 minutes to midnight never got fucked up until he arrived.
I like Janick, and I can not imagine Maiden without him. I love Dave and H too but I think all three compliment each other so well that I could not say who is better. Janick Gers is Maiden, as much as Dave, Adrian, Bruce, Steve Harris and Nico are Maiden. If one component was missing we would not have the awesome ride we have been on since 2000. This is the way Maiden is suppose to be in 2008, and I would not change a thing. The evolution of Maiden, Up the Irons!!!

I've been a Maiden fan for a lot of years and I have never before heard, read or seen anything that said Maiden was meant to have three guitarists in their lineup. The Powerslave era material sounds awful with a third guitarist in it, so I'm not sure if you are really listening or just defending Janick on principle. I'm listening and what I am hearing is not good.
Umm have you seen the Early Days DVD? They say in there that Steve wanted Maiden to be a six piece band. The only song that sounds remotely bad Powerslave era is Aces High everything else to me sounds great especially Rime of the Ancient Mariner.
Honestly, I REALLY don't like Janick. Like he is a good player, but he just messes around WAY to much. I don't think he is the right person to be in Maiden. It just needs to be Davey, and Adrian just like the old days.

I don't make too much of this, because Bruce made similar comments at the LA Show. It looks like a jab made into a routine with maybe a little malice, but not much more than giving the mate a good ribbing. Bruce even put him in a corner, with some of the same words used, so I got to believe that this is part of the Dickenson act, which does rub some folks wrong. Like when he bashed my Lakers in front of an LA crowd after putting a Jersey on Eddie. Wrong move to pull in Inglewood, Bruce.
I'm not a fan of Janick's. I'm glad they kept him when Adrian came back Number one for loyalty's sake and second it enabled them to do something different than they have the past 30 years without sacrificing their sound.
To be honest, I can't see what he adds musically. Three guitars is a but much, really.
His stage theatrics are the real issue though, watching him actually wrecked the show for me somewhat. I love Maiden because they have survived the 80's without the 80's band stigma and then there is Janick acting like it is still the 80's making the rest of the band look bad. He needs to stop behaving like it's 1985 or get out of the band.

But you said that my earlier post, in which I pointed out Jan's writing contributions, was "accurate." Therefore you admit he does more than "move around the stage." If Janick had left when Adrian returned we would never have had "Ghost of the Navigator" "The Legacy" and many others. At this point he isn't playing a lot of H's solos anyway. Furthermore, if he's good enough for the rest of them, he's good enough for me.
No Janick = No "Be Quick or Be Dead", no "Ghost of the Nagivator", no "Dance of Death", no "The Legacy".... and many others. He may be a bit spastic but he's contributed some great material. Besides, they've never sounded better - just listen carefully for the three-guitar harmony on "The Trooper" from Death on the Road. Best version of the song...
Throwing around his guitar and dancing is just his style. He enjoys being on the stage and its fun to watch him. What's bad in a guitarist who enjoys doing what he does? Every guitarist is unique, this is what makes Janick unique. You don't like it, we get it. But saying "blow him up" and insulting the man during the show is not how a fan should react.
'Act' being the key word here. He needs to 'play' the guitar instead of throwing it in the air and doing crazy magic hands at it. He needs to stop acting or get out of the band.
My only issue with Janick is the way in which he carries himself onstage. The Whitesnake and Poison theatrics do not belong in Maiden. Maiden is still around and still respected because they were musicians who played great music.
At this particular show, Janick actually ruined the end of the pre-encore set because he missed his cue while he was 'posing' at the edge of the stage and, as a result, the pyro tech was unable to ignite the fireworks that were mean to end the show. Bruce took Janick aside following this and berated him and then what you saw in the video took place when Maiden returned to stage for the encore.

Janick was totally on fire on sunday night. Did not hear a bad word said about him. Of the three guitarists, he was probably my pick of the night. There was as much love for Janick as there was for any of the others. Before Maiden arrived on stage we (the crowd around the floor's centre barricade) saw Janick at the back/right of the stage, and we yelled his name and were cheering our heads off.
Exactly! A true fan should trust the band to make a good decision about their own band. Blayze didn't fit, so they parted ways. SURELY the rest of Maiden know more about the band and whats good for the band than some dude sitting in front of a computer. And for the guitarists here (if there are any) try and learn the shit Janick plays and you'll realise why he's still in the band. Janick is a long standing member coz he's bloody good at what he does.
I still think Blaze did what he did very well. I heard Bruce trying to do songs like Sutureal and I think it's not even close to Blaze's ability for the song. Just like Blaze trying to do a song like Caught Somewhere In Time. THey did their own things great just not the others.
Janick's been in Maiden for over half the length of time Maiden have been a band. How can you say he's not Maiden? He was great fun to watch on stage and added a bit of humour. I went because I love Maiden and I had never seen them. If I had know what a distraction Janick was going to be, I wouldn't have gone.
I have to admit, the fact that he is a distraction given all of the theatrics at a Maiden show is pretty impressive.

I think I may disable comments on this video because the comments in support of Janick are based purely on anger and emotional attachment, rather than consideration for what is actually right for the band. Three guitarists on pre-Janick Maiden songs sounds like a big sonic fart and watching Janick throw his guitar in the air and wave 'magic hands' at it looks even worse than it sounds. Twelve black hearses travel slowly down a quiet street as ominous clouds gather in the skies above. Janick is amazing and deserves to be in Maiden.
He's so damn full of energy, his stage presence almost defines Maiden in the 2000's, he's an amazing guitarist, his live harmonizing solos with Adrian and Dave are unbelievably awesome, and he's clearly an incredible composer, seeing as how he wrote almost all of the guitar parts to The Legacy, among other songs.
And I think it's pretty obvious that Maiden is best with 3 guitarists. They wrote 3rd guitar parts before even having 3 guitarists.

I kind of like 3 guitarists on stage, as some song such as Remember Tomorrow, the solo parts of Sign of The Cross and POTO gets much better. But Adrian and Dave are 100 times better than Janick, and I think that they should do the solos, and he the under-solo riffs. He's too sloppy, and he spends 50% of the time on getting tangled into the cables. Also, the into to 2 minutes to midnight never got fucked up until he arrived.

I like Janick, and I can not imagine Maiden without him. I love Dave and H too but I think all three compliment each other so well that I could not say who is better. Janick Gers is Maiden, as much as Dave, Adrian, Bruce, Steve Harris and Nico are Maiden. If one component was missing we would not have the awesome ride we have been on since 2000. This is the way Maiden is suppose to be in 2008, and I would not change a thing. The evolution of Maiden, Up the Irons!!!

The Powerslave era material sounds awful with a third guitarist in it, so I'm not sure if you are really listening or just defending Janick on principle. It looks like a jab made into a routine with maybe a little malice, but not much more than giving the mate a good ribbing. Bruce even put him in a corner, with some of the same words used, so I got to believe that this is part of the Dickenson act, which does rub some folks wrong. Like when he bashed my Lakers in front of an LA crowd after putting a Jersey on Eddie. Wrong move to pull in Inglewood, Bruce.

At this particular show, Janick actually ruined the end of the pre-encore set because he missed his cue while he was 'posing' at the edge of the stage and, as a result, the pyro tech was unable to ignite the fireworks that were mean to end the show. Bruce took Janick aside following this and berated him and then what you saw in the video took place when Maiden returned to stage for the encore.

Janick was totally on fire on sunday night. Did not hear a bad word said about him. Of the three guitarists, he was probably my pick of the night. There was as much love for Janick as there was for any of the others. Before Maiden arrived on stage we (the crowd around the floor's centre barricade) saw Janick at the back/right of the stage, and we yelled his name and were cheering our heads off.

At the beginning of the encore, Bruce tells of Janick for wrecking the fireworks at the show's finale. Janick was prancing and posing at the front of the stage over top of the cannons and the tech could not ignite the pyro to conclude the show.
